LYRICS
He told me that much and now he’s dead
Taught me to kill my indulgences
With a sharp blow to the temple
Pick up the phone call and do everything he says
I could take a plastic camera
We could make such a pretty picture
Oh so happy. Oh, oh so happy
I’m pretty cool once you get to know me
I feel at some point I broke my mind
I’m always searching the silent type
How do you all make it look so easy?
You open your hearts up so quickly it scares me
She’s an artist, paints across my chest
Goes to parties, act like hotel guests
Wake up Monday, now it’s over
Don’t you know no-one gets what they came here for?
I could paint her, wrapped around her
We could make such a pretty picture
Oh so happy. Oh, oh so happy
I’m pretty cool once you get to know me
But I’m just the same
I’ve got a boring name
Across the world from what you want and what you came here for
So I’ll wait here for you
Said, please just let me stay
Oh, just let me stay
I guess you know now what to expect
He lives your own life in retrospect
You know it bores me? These insecurities.
Breaks you down just to act as the architect
I could wait here, by the west pier
Watched the flotsam float, slowly disappear
Oh so happy, oh oh, so happy
If only you knew just how much better things could be
Another week of action
Another hypoglycaemic reaction
But I’m just the same
I’ve got a boring name
Across the world from what you want and what you came here for
So I’ll wait here for you
Said, please just let me stay
Oh, just let me stay
Oh, just let me…
I’m sorry it’s all so predictable
I’m sorry it’s all so predictable

This absolute masterpiece
People saying that they can’t listen to Lovejoy anymore: many bands in the past have had a shitty person in the band, yet still the band was loved.
For example, the band “The Doors” has some amazing songs, but Jim Morrison, a member of the band, did some awful things. He dipped into drugs, which caused some issues with abuse, violence and mistreating his partner, Yet people still adore their music and don’t acknowledge that they can’t listen to them
Separating the art from the artist does not mean they are supporting the artist.
Apart from anything, hating Lovejoy due to Wilbur’s shitty actions puts the bad reputation onto all the members of the band when they were not involved with it (as far as we know anyway)
also kanye did shitty stuff but his music is still really loved
Exactly
Your comments about Jim Morrison are false. No wife of his hung herself as you claim. He was never legally married. His famous girlfriend Pamela Courson was a drug addict who died of a heroin OD in 1974. His longtime partner Patricia Keneally died of natural causes recently at age 76.

@@AlexT1210it isnt a crime. Plus unless she took pictures of the bite marks, and IF it was a crime, then he could never be convicted. Really though, hes been punished enough (or will be, lovejoy will prolly fall apart). He lost all his friends, career, and will find it very hard to make new friends or find a partner. Leave him be, we already basically know he has depression (judging by the state of his room and stuff).
@@tempejklI agree
@@tempejklyou are the most reasonable person I have seen talking about this subject, thank you.
My brain is still trying to comprehend the absolute insane talent happening in this video; the actors, the design, the directing, the band, the music. You can feel that everyone put their soul into this, and we truly thank you for it. I have never more in my life wanted to just be wrapped up in a music video. Not sure if that’s weird…. Sorry…
BUT SERIOUSLY THIS IS SO FUCKING COOL.
Great job guys, so happy for you all.
The following is an analysis of the video by jumbo from June 2 2023 "Here’s my thoughts on it. I’m in film school, and I was a Choir student for 12 years. This is all just incredible. Just figured I’d share my thoughts! Digging into the lyrics, the song is about a guy who wants to fall in love with a girl but can’t because he’s insecure that he’s too boring and predictable. Paradoxically, he wants to put himself out there and do great and exciting things - presumably to have something to talk about - but he’s too scared to do that too. He wants to be something, but he’s not saying anything at all literally and figuratively. Thus, the song’s title, Portrait of a Blank Slate, is an oxymoron representing the psyche of this hypothetical man. The music video is full of silent era components and surrealist imagery, which is a great way for director Ted Nivison to say he’s a film buff without saying he’s a film buff. Though it’s what he states in his BTS video, I drew much more from his vision than mere efforts to be “weird,” “old,” or “trippy.” I think the choice to splice public domain medical footage in with the rest of the music video expresses the hypothetical man’s acknowledgement that he is, on the most rudimentary level, exactly how everyone else exists. It’s fitting that footage that everyone has access to was used to convey that he’s got a body, he’s got a brain, and he feels he has nothing unique to do with it. I know that he’s telling himself this because of the edit that rapidly match cuts between the test subject and the scientist helming the experiment just before the title slides of various illnesses. Sometimes, match cuts are just done to create a smooth transition from one thing to another, but I firmly believe this is one of those cases suggesting the two subjects linked by the match cuts are one and the same. He is the test subject, and the scientists are the voices in his head, deconstructing him to the point of illness… mental illness. The lyrics sung at this exact point are “I guess you know now what to expect He lives your own life in retrospect You know it bores me? These insecurities Breaks you down just to act as the architect” Rewatching the music video again, I immediately paused it at this part and replayed it because it stood out to me as perfect synchronicity between soundtrack and cinematic language. This was certainly my favorite part, and this level of artistry totally stays maintained from start to finish. Lovejoy’s song slaps, Ted Nivison did a fine job directing the music video, and both parties accomplished so much in so little time. The project may tell a story about lacking individuality, but the project itself definitely earns its own"

So glad Ted were able to direct this. It was such an amazing video. Great editing and concept of what the video's about and it even suits the song quite well. Really hope to see more spectacular music videos as amazing like this! 🔥

Bro this music video quite literally gave me chills, huge congrats to Ted and the band for this absolutely incredible music video
same here haha
Ted's direction is literally so insane, this music video is incredible. somehow the visuals made the music itself better- like i hadnt noticed how hard the bass line goes (oversight on my part, how could i ever underestimate The Ash Kabosu-) till watching this. everyone who worked on this did such a great job. absolute work of art! wow.
This, Taunt, Call me what you Like. 3 best Lovejoy songs
how could such a waste of space make a song this good
Every crazy/insane ppl are like us but difference they know how to use their potential well than us.
aint a waste of space then is it
@@instentproductions3180 exactly what I'm all about. What wilbur did is absolutely awful and disgusting, and he should be in prison for an amount of time, but he doesn't deserve to die, and he brang so much positivity with his songs, people tend to forget that so easily

OFCOURSE ITS A MASTERPIECE!!! Im so happy school is almost over summer is close and lovejoy is back 💗
omg hello fellow stocking pfp enjoyer
It has been years since i listen to a song that just RADIATES early 2000's energy. This is amazing! The music is so melodic, the video is just so macabre in a good way and the actors really played their role. I could feel their panic in the end. Great job to everyone involved in the shooting of this MV!
its alot like a killers song imo
the first part of the bass riff is a direct copy of under control by good shoes, a guitar song from the 2000s
Ted done a great job as director
i have a interesting take in the situation involving the Wilbur and Shelby. I think that its stupid. 1. Shelby dont go online and say these things infront hundreds of internet crackheads, tell a therapist and the goddamn police. Wilbur, you have abused someone and i dont support that stuff but i do believe people can change. Wilbur, please get better and Shelby get better. Kudos, everyone.
She's an attention seeker and she always like post that threaten Wilbur
i find myself agreeing with this take wholeheartedly
kudos man
I agree wholeheartedly. Of course, never abuse or harm anyone. And never air your dirty laundry out on the internet.
Wholeheartedly agree, I'm so glad you said this.
that is a very good stance!
i feel like shelby could and should have handled this situation in a much better way.
Wilbur's actions were terrible but that was private information, shelby's trauma shouldn't be undermined but shelby should have been aware of how big of a fanbase wilbur has-- and how many people have been helped through hard times watching his content.
its amazing that shelby had the courage to share her story and warn others of abuse but-
informing police and therapists are more important than randos on the internet.
This is quite possibly the best music video I’ve ever watched. I don’t usually like music videos but this is so creative, well done on this one guys
This was recommended to me from the song that’s called “Dupe - Balling” 🫡🫡🫡
I loved this band why will why?
Who’s stopping you from still loving them?
@@Szwiftyy no one just sad that he had to do that
Can’t believe this song is in the Soundtrack of EAFC 24
WAIT IT IS!!! OUR INDIE BAND IS IN EAFC!!!!
Here’s my thoughts on it.
The lyrics sung at this exact point are
“I guess you know now what to expect
He lives your own life in retrospect
You know it bores me? These insecurities
Breaks you down just to act as the architect”
Rewatching the music video again, I immediately paused it at this part and replayed it because it stood out to me as perfect synchronicity between soundtrack and cinematic language. This was certainly my favorite part, and this level of artistry totally stays maintained from start to finish.
Lovejoy’s song slaps, Ted Nivison did a fine job directing the music video, and both parties accomplished so much in so little time. The project may tell a story about lacking individuality, but the project itself definitely earns its own.
Sorry I’m in a high school film class, is calling it a match cut the right term? I thought a match cut was like changing the camera angle in the middle of a fluid motion, still a great analysis
Man, loved reading this! I’ll just say there’s absolutely more going on than me just saying I’m making it “weird” haha, I usually have intention at the end of the day, especially with how the pub domain connects to the storyline of the video, amongst other stuff!
What does the band represent than? You can see the band is present in the scene, so what do they represent?
I loved reading this holy shit
AGREED but I'd also just like to say that this analysis is really well done too. You've very observant and bright, great job jumbo!
