It’s a freestyle but he’s got a fucking library of written schemes in his head. Dude is on another level & only getting more complex as he gets older.
Sure thats a type of freestyle but its not an off the top freestyle. Theres different levels to the shit and what Em does and how he does it is the best at that level but off the top is a completely different beast.

He has done plenty of off the top freestyles before too & killed it but typically off the top for anyone isn’t gonna have the complexity of something written & at the end of the day “off the top” isn’t exactly what most people think, tons of freestyle or battle rappers write & memorize their lines for battles, they may change some stuff up here & there off the top but it was still thought of beforehand. With that being said Marshall definitely a fucking legend & not just in hip hop, he’s one of the greatest writers to ever put pen to paper.

There is an old video I remember where Em explains how to freestyle, you take old writtens you never used in anything or little lines you came up with but never used, and mix them with actual rhymes you come up with on the spot.

There's two definitions for FREESTYLE one is pre-written memorized. The other is fresh off the dome where you might incorporate some written you had memorized if it fits

As far as Em freesyling off of random words that are thrown at him, that's exactly the first kind of freestyles that Em started with. He used to do it at radio stations back in the day. The radio announcer would throw him random words in the middle of Em rhyming, and he'd have to keep it going.
