Arguably the most important concept to understand in the world of kart racing - is the racing line. Now what is the racing line you might ask? The racing line is the path around the track that will allow you to carry the most speed throughout the corners.
Many believe that the fastest way around the track is the shortest distance, like when running. However, this is NOT the case. In racing, the fastest line is the path that allows for the least amount of turning, and the largest radius so you can carry the most amount of speed.
Here is a look at what the racing line looks like from a top down view. The line begins on corner entry, where the kart is positioned on the outside edge of the track. As the corner progresses, you should aim towards the apex, or the center of the corner, and then finally ending at the far edge of the track on corner exit.
To see this concept in action, let’s take a look at some onboard footage from one of my League events at COTA Karting here in Austin.
As you can see, as I start on the outside edge of the track approaching the corner. As the corner progresses, I move in towards the apex, and swing wide and use all the track on exit.
Now that we know the racing line, I have 5 great tips to ensure you are maximizing your speed while driving.
1. DO NOT DRIFT. Drifting is slow. No matter how cool it may look or feel, drifting is the fastest way to ruin a lap. The wheels are designed to move in a forward direction. Anything other than that is slower, and should be avoided.
2. Keep your steering movements smooth. Jerking the wheel around scrubs speed into corners, and can upset the balance of the kart. Only steer just what is necessary to avoid losing time, and keeping your steering fluid will help you stay in control.
3. Use the brake when necessary. Even the best drivers in the world have to be masters at slowing down. Use your brakes in a straight line when coming up to a turn to avoid spinning out. Remember, sometimes feeling slower is actually the fastest way around the track.
4. Use all the track available. A common mistake new drivers make is not making use of every inch of available space along the track. You can find seconds of time by sticking just a few feet closer to the edge of the track along the racing line.
For example on this turn, you can see I am right up against the barriers on the right, come right up to the barriers on the left, and use all of the track on the exit.
On this turn, you can see I creep off the outside edge of the track to gain a bit of an advantage on entry to maximize every bit of space I can.
5. Stay away from slow drivers. If someone is holding you up, pass them quickly and safely. It’s in your best interest to safely move around them so you can continue going fast. On another note, if someone faster than you is behind, let them through!! Stay close behind and study the way they take the turns. The best way to get faster is to learn from others on the track.
If you have a GoPro or action camera, bring it with you. Some tracks may have different rules about what is allowed, but generally it’s a good idea to record your race footage and watch it back later on to see where you can improve. You can also compare it side by side with faster people to see what to do differently.
Alright guys so that’s it! The beginner’s guide to going fast on track. If you learned something from this video, please consider leaving a like down below! It really helps me out and shows me that you enjoyed the video.

@@EthanPalosh wish me luck I'm going today 😂 and thanks for the tips
I had a slow driver that wouldn't let anyone past. They'd look over their shoulder and see someone coming on their side, and they'd pull in front of them. So darn annoying.
Bro that pfp
my solution i learned from racing games
a "feint" overtake
basically before a corner on the straight, you go to their outside to "overtake". as soon as they go to block you, then you switch back to steal the inside while they cant see you. then zoom
happened to me yesterday, went straight into him and he learnt the lesson
My first time driving in a long time, and the second I saw someone behind me, I waved them ahead. Common decency! But great tip on the feint. Will use that fo sho.
@@denislyons it requires really specific timing, and its a one shot thing too
This was posted 4 days after I first went karting - haha! Going back tonight in an hour, thanks for the tips!
Awesome!!! Good luck out there!!
Curious, did you see improvements?
@@leblancX94 Yep! Beat my lap time there by quite a bit.
Went karting today for 5 heats, 1st heat was dry, then it started raining so heat 2-4 was gradually less wet. When I got to heat 5 my dry pace had also gone up significantly. The track I went to had an all time record of 50.012 I went from 57.8 down to 51.05 by my final fastest lap.
Great job!!!!!!
That’s incredible!!! Well done!

Haha of course!! Great to hear from another Austinite - Best of luck next time you're out there!
I'm gonna start karting soon after I finish my college move in (delayed here because of covid). I know it's kind of late to start karting for me, especially with a little hope of making it professional (not F1 tho, maybe some other series that is still possible for me) but I really want to work hard and achieve something in karting/racing. I hope one day I can look back to this video with a few achievements to tell :)

Update?
Way cool dude going for first time ever today at Atlanta Motorsports Park and your very clear description and examples of the often discussed racing line are super helpful...feel like I actually get it now both in principle and practice. Cheers!
Ethan, it might be harder with modern, sticky tyres, but have you tried 'flick' driving to shorten the braking distance? T Fullerton was the master at that. My friend, Kevin Warner also perfected it. As did, 6 times world champion, Mike Wilson.
Hey Richard!! I love this technique. I use it in small amounts when I race Lo206. They are low-power motors so its pretty detrimental to get sideways, but a little on entry is certainly helpful! In faster classes I see this being used a lot.
@@EthanPalosh Naturally, I am a very smooth driver. Developed my 'flick' more recently (now 58 years old). However, I am better going right than left! LOL
Do tell more. 🙏
@@denislyons OK Denis, not tried it with modern sticky tyres, so you might have to modify the technique for those. You can try it gently at first, just a small turn / 'flick' on the brakes. You basically break the back-end away using the brakes. (Of course it only works on a kart that has rear axle braking). As you perfect it, you should be able to leave your braking a lot later and shorten the braking distance. You also have the kart partly turned already when you get to the corner.
@@richardmortimer8147 i think I was doing this yesterday. Is it like a mini-drift? just a quick little slide?

Hey! I’m 16 too and just started 2 weeks ago. Although I’ve come last in both races and have spun out multiple times everyone is cool and supportive. My #1 tip would be to find practice time as much as possible, by doing this I have cut 3 seconds off my best lap. Good luck!

Hey Ethan , you are a sympathic and smart young driver . What are you doing "for your muscles and your condition" ? I know by myself , it is NOT only to sit and drive . . .
Hey Anton! I used to do no conditioning as my racing was pretty casual. When I started racing competitively, I had to gain weight to fit into the weight requirement, so I've started working out at a gym - lifting, machines, etc for overall bulk for weight. It also helps with being able to handle the kart as well haha. Hope this helps!
using all of the track is really important specially for beginners, they are afraid of going too wide, so they only use something like 65% of the track, i've been there too
Thanks for this!
Of course! Glad I could help!
I'll go racing with the homies this week, wish me luck!
Good luck!!! Go crush em 💪🏻
Thanks for the info I’m going karting today hopefully I can apply this knowledge on the track thank you for sharing
Great , thanks ❤️❤️
1. Keep on the racing line.
2. Drift = is slow
3. Steer when it's necessary. Less steer = less speed is lost
4. Use brakes in a straight line before turning
5. Use every inch of the track
6. Stay away from slow drivers
wow my left ear loved the intro

Pretty happy i knew this already lol
I had an dirty driver ahead, he would just move to block me and when we gone side by side, he spun me 2 times, still managed to pass him as he was 1 second slower per lap
the racing line aka the dancing line, the dancing line helps to guide you do you dont trip
Thanks for the tips kiddo!

Of course!! I am so grateful
Great video.
24 degrees and you call that cold that would be boiling in England
Degrees Fahrenheit!!
Problem with me is that when I'm setting up my turn into an apex (go wide for a better exit) some fool divebombs on the inside and takes us both out.
Really nice track!!
Right?? I love COTA Karting, it’s a great facility. I really hope they open up club karting events there soon. 🤞 League was a blast!
When I’m karting I never brake, just lay off the throttle!
“Drifting is slow” Thank you for saying that
New sub, and I would like to learn more technical driving pls
Let's go austin 🤠🤠🤠🤠
But I seriously learned a lot from this, so thank you!
yeaaaaaaaa good stuff
This worked very well I beat my sister by a landslide and it was my first time go carting
The letting faster people pass to learn is something HUUUUGE I wish more rookies would realize. Nothing wrong with being a beginner, but it's maddening when they try and purposefully block everyone when they're literally being lapped. Haha. I'm middle of the pack at best and I always let faster karters pass. Safer and more fun for everyone.
You ever just lean out but tilt your head in?
I did that but then leaned my head out and it helped bring up the inside wheel better
Hey Hayden!! I've seen this tactic before actually. I'm not quite sure the effectiveness of this strategy, but the theory is that leaning your weight out will shift the balance of the kart to the outside. I tried using this technique for a little while, but I found that putting my head out there distracted my driving and ended up being slower haha! I don't use it anymore because I can affect the stiffness of the chassis in the setup to get the same effect without compromising my driving
@@EthanPalosh I have a super stiff chassis I had to make cuts in it to actually flex
Thanks man :)
I’d love to do racing professionally, I’ve been working hard and going to indoor kart riding but I don’t have my own kart so I can’t race professionally 🙁😔😣☹️🙁
Buy one bro and practice
@@Jaionxzz try to save 💰 if you can ofc
I’m watching this an hour before I go karting again
once you can run fast laps, the next level is passing... most important thing in passing is when not to which is MOST of the time. I never "attempt" a pass you either have it or you don't. Unforced errors is the best way to win a series . Second is the learn late break passing... once you mastered this, 99% of all karters don't even know what this is. Look it up.
I often go to COTA karting to get some seat time. One question i have always asked is are we allowed to bring our own Karts? I have a 206 brigg and i love the track
unfortunately no. I really wish they would though because I would love to take my 206 there too, it’s a lot closer to me than HCKC. Maybe one day…
@@EthanPalosh that's a shame, we are picking up my kart a week from now and the only karting place nearest to us is HCKC
Thanks
Well done.
this got me pole!!
i think the racing line doesn't win races as much in some types of motorsports, like f1 for example. In f1 or open wheel racing in general, there is plenty of downforce and barely any bodyroll compared to most closed wheel, so the racing line isn't as crucial. You just have to enter corners at the right speed. For example if you want to take over your opponent, if they brake early in a corner, you can take advantage of that by braking a bit later than them and not as hard, so you can keep your momentum up and coast through that corner.
Edit: however, in karting, especially like when its for fun with your friends, it will probably be easier and you can probably waver from the line. It depends on the level of your opponents
So I’m going go carting with my friends this weekend and we’re all very competitive this is my first time doing anything like this but this video helped a lot :)
Glad I could help out!! Have fun!!!!

@@EthanPalosh i am dreamin of becomin a nascar an a motorsports driver
Thank you brother.I just picked up karting last week and I love it. I didnt know it would be so hard. I cant tell what is making me spin when going into a corner (too much throttle and steering input at the same time) or (too hard on the brakes)?
It seems I cant get the car to rotate around tight turns god enough. I either carry too much speed and run wide or I scrub too much speed and lead w the nose of the kart and cant get the rear end around.
Any tips?
for sure! if you are running wide, try your best to get slowed down before the corner. For the other issue, make sure you aren’t ripping at the wheel (turning sharp and hard). Should be a smooth fluid motion.
To get the kart rotated around, you can play around with the braking. Likely you just have rear brakes, so use that to your advantage to stay right on the limit of grip going into the corner and let the rear step out a little bit to rotate. You can also play with a tiny wheel flick to get the kart going in the right direction on turn in.
Thanks you s0 much brother!!!! So is it firm on the brakes to get it rotated and then the accelerator pedal helps (stop or neutralize) the rotation and straighten me back up?!@@EthanPalosh
yes, and in some cases being on the gas can aid the rotation as well
Wow. Thank you so much. I truly appreciate the time, pointers, and insight. Best wishes to you brother and keep going!!!!@@EthanPalosh
Bro from my b day we are going to do races so I need to train more
there is no snow in Texas mate
Haha! Prob why our power grid didn’t handle it so well…..
Went go kart racing this week and came 6th out of 16 I was in 4th place but I slammed on the brakes and starting spinning out and I went for another round and I got cut off till they hit me into the wall so when I saw them again I went full power and hit them and they spun out😂
I have played enough Mario Kart to know drifting makes you fast!
Hey there, what’s your tip to turning 180° on a track? I found myself constantly drifting unintentionally when trying to turn these corners
sombody tell me idk if this is for all go karts but i went to a place and when you pressed the gas just a little the whole thing went so fast
Well don’t drift like an idiot, but do drift into the corners to get some rotation into the corner so you won’t need to turn the steering wheel as much. Drift a little into the corner by locking up the brakes in the last moments of the braking phase.
thats why you arent a professional driver lol

i wish i was allowed to film me drive will in a race
Hi! I’m doing karting as a sport and I’m having my next lesson Sunday. The track where i drive has many high speed corners and a few corners where you need to brake hard. Do you have any tips for me? Would love that.
Hey!! So sorry for the delayed response, I have been away from my computer this past week. Hopefully this reaches you in time!! My tips for high speed corners is to make sure to ask how to set up the kart chassis for the track. Usually if a track has a tendency towards one type of corner, you can gain a lot of time in the setup. Make sure to keep the wheel smooth with small inputs (no sawing at the wheel), and avoid oversteer. For those heavy braking zones, just be careful not to overshoot them. Find a braking point that works for you and stick to it. Also - test alternate lines and how early you have to brake for them to get prepared for overtaking. For example, try taking an inside line like you are overtaking into the corner and see how early you have to brake compared to the normal line. Best of luck!!!
@@EthanPalosh thank you! I did read your response but I didn’t answer cause of a problem with the typing. Your tips worked!
