  • The DX-451 is one of Hilti's early strip tools and I don't believe it is still on the market; at least I don't see it on their website. The tool is nearly identical to the DX-450 but the 450 was designed to use 4mm pins assembled with 12mm washers and if I recall right, the 450 could not accept a level 6 strip load.

Neat channel and my thanks for your postings! I've used PATs since the 1970s and find them quite interesting.

I glad you enjoy them. I started collecting the tools about 25 years ago and first started putting these videos up so that if anything should happen to me my greedy unwashed heirs would have an idea of what they are and how they were used.

What kind of pins would I use in a dx350 I think the ramset ones are too small, I want to anchor treated 2x4s to concrete.

Hey buddy we have the same one as you but not sure what type of blanks they use

The common .27 caliber strips. You can find them at Home Depot or Lowes but you might have a hard time finding the level 6 loads in those places. If you need level 6, you may have to try a contractor supply store.

Can this be used for like the 3 1/2” nails to mount boards to concrete? Thx

Under normal circumstances, the longest pin one would use for concrete is 3 inches and this is the longest pin capacity of most tools. Any pin longer that 3 inches is most likely going to cause problems.

Vintage Powder Actuated Tools thanks for your help I’m asking because I had a Ramsey d60 that I use for this purpose and trying to replace that model with a used one was going to cost more than I wanted to spend. I bought the same hilti you have but am having trouble finding the same pins for the hilti. I haven’t received the hilti but wanted to be ready. Am I correct that my Ramset pins won’t work in the hilti? The rubber buffer looks to be larger from pictures but I’m not sure. I really appreciate you taking the time to answer my last question it really helped 👍🏻

@@Chris-hp1be You can use Ramset pins in Hilti tools if the Hilti tool has a 8mm piston and pin guide in it. In this 451, I am using a 10mm (3/8) set up. It is true that the Hilti drive pins and pistons are made to be used together for improved centering and better guidance into the material, but you can use other pins in their tools. These days the best replacement tools for general use would be any of the knock-off tools of the Hilti DX-350, such as the Simpson PT-27 or De Walt 3500. The pins and loads are everywhere and the parts should be interchangeable, as long as you stay away from the "improved" versions that have power dials in them. In my opinion, power dials can be useful but for the most part but they are just another thing that will go wrong. The power dial tools are also all made a little different and parts are not interchangeable with other tools.

Vintage Powder Actuated Tools gotcha thanks so much for your time. I’ve searched the net but the info just made me more confused. I believe I understand why now. I didn’t know the tool had interchangeable guides. Hopefully the one I ordered from eBay has the 8mm installed. Appreciate your expertise 👍🏻 right after I broke my d60 I went to Lowe’s and bought a cheap one shot dewalt that had a trigger or you could hit with a hammer it didn’t fire half the time I exchanged it the new one worked good maybe 10 shots then did same thing. It’s like the firing pin wouldn’t reset after cycling. So it took 10 minutes between shots But it was like 40$ so I shoulda known better lol

@@Chris-hp1be You can still use the tool by hammering the nail into the wood just enough to get it to stand up. Make sure you still rest the piston and you may need to drop to a load level. As for the hammer strike
tools, someone once told me the target buyer was actually women looking for a father's day or birthday gift: "Maybe if I get him this he will finally fix that loose mailbox." I'm pretty sure he was only half kidding.

is there a difference between the charge of the strips vs the singles?

No, they are the same loads just packaged differently.
