(I guess complaining of “bone spurs” was not an option in old Bavaria.) He Anglicized the name to Trump during WWI to sound less German. He ran a restaurant saloon that was also a whorehouse in the Red Light District of Seattle. He then took advantage of a corrupt US Land Office, and laid claim to land in an area where gold had been discovered, even though someone else already had a claim to the land. Friedrich Trump pretended he wanted to mine that land - so he didn’t have to pay for it. It was illegal for him to build on a mining claim, but he did anyway: another whorehouse, as in Seattle. When the real owner of the land tried to assert his claims, he was ignored. Immigrant Friedrich Trump, who eventually became a US citizen, thus established the proud Trump family traditions in this country of sleaze, exploitation of women, shady business deals, theft, and degrading our society by participating in government corruption. I'm Hispanic, im 31, i dont have a degree in anything, but I've taken enough philosophy classes to be well versed in research methods and have been enrolled in honors classes throughout my education. I'll be supporting Biden. I dont think it's about race. it's about education and the lack of it. If you look at viewership between something like sports and something like national geographic and discovery, it isn't a surprise how Trump is winning in polls. The average Trump supporter isn't capable of critical thinking. They see the hype more than whats at stake, and so they vote against their own interests. Its a tough and depressing reality, but there are still others like me who see through the facade, so there is hope. Im doing what I can to spread awareness within my own family, and that's all we can do for now.

If you want a valid third party that can get something done, you need to build the party from local offices upward, you can’t start at the Presidential level. A President needs congressional support and like minded people with experience to appoint to senior positions.
Will never work. As hard as it is to get a 3rd party candidate elected to President, it is much harder at local levels for two reasons. 1. It is impossible for an independent candidate to get any publicity in local races. 2. The rates of independents voting in non-presidential elections, off-year, and local elections is a fraction of that of what votes in presidential elections. The vast, almost total, amount of people voting in off-year elections are GOP or Dems, and they almost always just vote full party. Or put it this way, the votes received by a GOP candidate in a typical local election will be higher than the number of people who even read the name of an independent on a ballot. Ross Perot did well, about 20% of the vote, and kinda developed a party pretty quickly, up until the point he went insane. If Ross had been 20 years younger and hadn't flipped out near the end, he would have created a real 3rd party in just a few years. He was almost there.

Looking at this from across the pond, I find it utterly baffling that Trump is even in the conversation. I agree with Wilson here. When the opponent is Trump and Project 2025, it doesn't matter who his opponent is. But now we do have the luxury of knowing the opponent, and it's Biden who have been the President for over three years, and he has a tremendous track record. His administration has surpassed at least my expectations, and I'm one who really liked Biden even when he was Obama's VP. It should be a no-brainer, but ever since the Democratic primary when Obama became the nominee and I started following American politics this closely (I'm Swedish), I have come to realise that a lot of Americans don't seem to understand their own electoral system. It's not like we have in Sweden and most of Europe, where the results will be proportional to the number of votes each candidate gets. In the US, it's "first past the post" meaning that in each voting district, the candidate with the most votes wins that district. It doesn't matter whether the winner got 51 % of the vote or 91 %; they still get all the votes for that district. This will result in what's so common in American presidential elections: the candidate who lost the popular vote wins the Electoral College. I agree with progressives that it shouldn't be that way, but it is. If one is rushed to the hospital with gangrene in their leg and beginning of sepsis, the correct course of action is to amputate the leg. It's not something preferable, and it will cause disruptions in one's lifestyle, but when presented with two options: keeping the leg and die; or amputating and live, the choice should be simple. There is no third option "wait and see" or "keep the leg and put a bandaid on it", because then the sepsis will make the choice for you. One more issue that neither guest brought up is nevertheless important to have in mind. That is: which candidate will be able to keep Republicans who don't want Trump away from voting for him? Because Democrats need them. Biden won in part thanks to never-Trumpers reaching over the aisle just this once. Not that Biden is very right-wing, but there are certainly candidates who are far left of him. Would never-Trumper Republicans go as far as voting for a social democrat or a straight-up socialist? I don't think all of them will. I wish people who don't like Biden for his stance on the Israel/Palestine issue or the border issue would ask themselves: would Trump or any of the other _viable_ candidates be able to handle those issues more to your liking? Would Trump safeguard the rights of Palestinians in Gaza? Most likely not.

We in Ontario Canada had a similar situation in the last provincial election. The three main parties split the vote almost evenly with the result that about 2/3 of the voters did not vote for the party that ended up winning. And we have an awful government now….a lot of people call him Trump Light.

The problem with most elections isn't the number of candidates. It's that voters are only allowed to select a single candidate. If we had ranked choice voting everywhere, people would be free to choose their favorite candidate first without fear that their vote would be wasted if that candidate ends up with the least amount of votes.
Voting for the candidate that we actually like is just fine. But the problem is that people don't pay attention during the primary process. And then get mad when they're down to only two choices.

A third party on US politics would be great, but you cannot start at the top. For a third party to be successful it has to start campaigning candidates at the local level, then progress to state then federal levels. No third party seems to want to put in the work or the time to really make their party count.
I'm not American but if I were an American progressive, and if I didn't like Biden (which I do, but I'm pretending I don't), I would vote for Biden for the presidency and focus instead on voting my concience on the local level. By doing that, I would get the best of two worlds: keeping Trump away from the White House; and helping my particular brand of politics alive and well where it matters most --- on the local level.
As an undecided voter I have to ask three questions: 1. Would I rather have $6.00 gas, $20.00 steaks and open borders or people attacking congress every January? 2. Would I rather have homeless camps all down the streets or a clean, safe neighborhood for my family? 3. When the real owner of the land tried to assert his claims, he was ignored. Immigrant Friedrich Trump, who eventually became a US citizen, thus established the proud Trump family traditions in this country of sleaze, exploitation of women, shady business deals, theft, and degrading our society by participating in government corruption. Perhaps when Donald Trump talks about immigrants as criminals he is being more reflective and autobiographical than people realize?

I'm Hispanic, im 31, i dont have a degree in anything, but I've taken enough philosophy classes to be well versed in research methods and have been enrolled in honors classes throughout my education. I'll be supporting Biden. I dont think it's about race. it's about education and the lack of it. If you look at viewership between something like sports and something like national geographic and discovery, it isn't a surprise how Trump is winning in polls. The average Trump supporter isn't capable of critical thinking. They see the hype more than whats at stake, and so they vote against their own interests. Its a tough and depressing reality, but there are still others like me who see through the facade, so there is hope. Im doing what I can to spread awareness within my own family, and that's all we can do for now.

If you want a valid third party that can get something done, you need to build the party from local offices upward, you can’t start at the Presidential level. A President needs congressional support and like minded people with experience to appoint to senior positions.
Will never work. As hard as it is to get a 3rd party candidate elected to President, it is much harder at local levels for two reasons. 1. It is impossible for an independent candidate to get any publicity in local races. 2. The rates of independents voting in non-presidential elections, off-year, and local elections is a fraction of that of what votes in presidential elections. The vast, almost total, amount of people voting in off-year elections are GOP or Dems, and they almost always just vote full party. Or put it this way, the votes received by a GOP candidate in a typical local election will be higher than the number of people who even read the name of an independent on a ballot. Ross Perot did well, about 20% of the vote, and kinda developed a party pretty quickly, up until the point he went insane. If Ross had been 20 years younger and hadn't flipped out near the end, he would have created a real 3rd party in just a few years. He was almost there.

I agree with Wilson here. When the opponent is Trump and Project 2025, it doesn't matter who his opponent is. But now we do have the luxury of knowing the opponent, and it's Biden who have been the President for over three years, and he has a tremendous track record. His administration has surpassed at least my expectations, and I'm one who really liked Biden even when he was Obama's VP. It should be a no-brainer, but ever since the Democratic primary when Obama became the nominee and I started following American politics this closely (I'm Swedish), I have come to realise that a lot of Americans don't seem to understand their own electoral system.
It's not like we have in Sweden and most of Europe, where the results will be proportional to the number of votes each candidate gets. In the US, it's "first past the post" meaning that in each voting district, the candidate with the most votes wins that district. It doesn't matter whether the winner got 51 % of the vote or 91 %; they still get all the votes for that district. This will result in what's so common in American presidential elections: the candidate who lost the popular vote wins the Electoral College. I agree with progressives that it shouldn't be that way, but it is. If one is rushed to the hospital with gangrene in their leg and beginning of sepsis, the correct course of action is to amputate the leg. It's not something preferable, and it will cause disruptions in one's lifestyle, but when presented with two options: keeping the leg and die; or amputating and live, the choice should be simple. There is no third option "wait and see" or "keep the leg and put a bandaid on it", because then the sepsis will make the choice for you.
One more issue that neither guest brought up is nevertheless important to have in mind. That is: which candidate will be able to keep Republicans who don't want Trump away from voting for him? Because Democrats need them. Biden won in part thanks to never-Trumpers reaching over the aisle just this once. Not that Biden is very right-wing, but there are certainly candidates who are far left of him. Would never-Trumper Republicans go as far as voting for a social democrat or a straight-up socialist? I don't think all of them will.
I wish people who don't like Biden for his stance on the Israel/Palestine issue or the border issue would ask themselves: would Trump or any of the other _viable_ candidates be able to handle those issues more to your liking? Would Trump safeguard the rights of Palestinians in Gaza? Most likely not.

We in Ontario Canada had a similar situation in the last provincial election. The three main parties split the vote almost evenly with the result that about 2/3 of the voters did not vote for the party that ended up winning. And we have an awful government now….a lot of people call him Trump Light.

The problem with most elections isn't the number of candidates. It's that voters are only allowed to select a single candidate. If we had ranked choice voting everywhere, people would be free to choose their favorite candidate first without fear that their vote would be wasted if that candidate ends up with the least amount of votes.
Voting for the candidate that we actually like is just fine. But the problem is that people don't pay attention during the primary process. And then get mad when they're down to only two choices.
The US needs preferential voting. Because it doesn’t have preferential voting, No Labels is a wasted vote at best, or at wort a vote for Trump. They could help end democracy in the US.

A third party on US politics would be great, but you cannot start at the top. For a third party to be successful it has to start campaigning candidates at the local level, then progress to state then federal levels. No third party seems to want to put in the work or the time to really make their party count.

I'm not American but if I were an American progressive, and if I didn't like Biden (which I do, but I'm pretending I don't), I would vote for Biden for the presidency and focus instead on voting my concience on the local level. By doing that, I would get the best of two worlds: keeping Trump away from the White House; and helping my particular brand of politics alive and well where it matters most --- on the local level.
Unless the DNC goes the way of the old Wig party. And it will. So there WILL be the required need for another 3 new, lesser, major parties.

As an undecided voter I have to ask three questions: 1. Would I rather have $6.00 gas, $20.00 steaks and open borders or people attacking congress every January?
2. Would I rather have homeless camps all down the streets or a clean, safe neighborhood for my family?
3. Let's look at past records, because we actually have two candidates who have held that office... who actually did a better job?

Yes, I don't understand it at all. He preaches these ideals but obviously means for himself. Because it's incredibly disrespectful for him to push a 3rd party alternative on us after primaries have started, without nearly enough time for us to get to know those people. Frankly, it smacks of a Trumpism ("do what I say!"). Once Biden is reelected, that's the appropriate time to let the rest of us, his fellow citizens, get to know his 3rd party choices. Right now that'll only elect Trump, who will not allow further election choice. 🙄 That little speech sounded condescending and judgemental. He's completely disregarding a current president and VP and team who've so smoothly and competently led our nation on recovering from a pandemic, that many don't even see it - bc our lives have been able to grind on as usual. That's government expertise. There are times where the true elder statesman is the right choice. For their years of learned experience, they can apply at a very chaotic, rough time.
Third Party candidates would be just wonderful to have IF we had ranked-choice voting across the country. Without that, we're stuck with simple First-Past-The-Post voting and you must vote against the worse candidate instead of voting for your preferred candidate. George Washington won 2 landslide elections against federalist party candidates and democratic republican party candidates, as the first independent candidate. I don't know. I like Biden too and he has far surpassed my expectations. But I guess some of the criticisms are: he's old; he's diplomatic in relation to Israel instead of chanting Hamas slogans (so many people mistake Biden's diplomacy for being okay with mass bombings and all-out revenge); he has a stutter; he's not "cool".
