  • We just added another reason that we are so happy with our decision to move from the United States to the Netherlands! The Efteling Theme Park!!! Join us as we discover the wonder and magic of this fairytale theme park located in Kaatsheuvel, Netherlands! It has even been rumored that Walt Disney visited (and “borrowed/stole” ideas?) from this enchanting park before opening Disneyland. One of the big differences is that unlike corporate Disney, the Efteling is all heart and a whole lot of magic without draining your savings account!
If you visit of live in the Netherlands, please do yourself a favor and make time to visit de Efteling Theme Park! You won’t regret it!
    Thank you for watching!

"One of the big differences is that unlike corporate Disney, the Efteling is all heart and a whole lot of magic without draining your savings account!" Considering that it is probably the most expensive theme-park in the country, that says something about the costs of Disney.

Efteling is based on the original European fairy tales by the brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen and Mother Goose, plus some of the 1001 Arabian Nights. Disney made his own versions of them later on. The design of Efteling was made by the famous Dutch illustrator/painter Anton Pieck. Who is actually also responsible for the internationally famous image of the garden gnomes (again, not the Disney ones) with the red pointy hats.

    • @ThatGuyGabeToo
      @ThatGuyGabeToo Год назад +4

I think you are mixing and amalgamating Anton Pieck with Rien Poortvliet, Anton's illustrations are nostalgic of the early days of the Netherlands and romanticized versions of the small town life in the villages and the Efteling Aesthetic is based of and designed by him and Rien is who illustrated the Wil Huygen books about the lives of the Kabouters or gnomes as they are known internationally...
They both are a national pride and their legacy is a treasure for generations to come but they are 2 different people.

I had the same problem Eric had with vogelrok, I was dizzy the entire day so I really felt for him. Next time definitely check out Fata Morgana and Droomvlucht! Those are really safe rides that you'll want to go on multiple times. Also the steamtrain, monorail and gondola's are perfect for having lunch in.

Tip for next time: the boat tour is a good quiet interlude, to recover from the wild rides or all the standing in line, and to eat your brought-from-home lunch while enjoying the flowers along the banks.
    Droomvlucht is really special!
I really don't like rollercoasters, but there is quite enough to do in the park to fill an entire day even without going in any of the nausea-inducing rollercoaster rides. Droomvlucht, Fata Morgana, Symbolica - those are lovely; and both the water-ride in the giant round tyres & Villa Volta have proven safely non-nauseating and non-terrifying for me.

Nope, we couldn't afford it when I grew up in the 1970s and '80s. And that was when the cost of entry was a fraction of what it's now.
First time I went there in fact was for a company 'team building' day in 1997. Not my thing, maybe in part because of the forced "having fun together" component of such days.
My parents took us to Avonturenpark Hellendoorn instead. Smaller, cheaper, and closer to home for us as well.

I remember from before the big rides were built, when it was just the fairy tale forest and going to the playground after that. Back then a ride on the pedal trains was our highlight of the day. What's so great about Efteling is that they really honour their past. Python is over 40 years old (it was Efteling's first rollercoaster and in 1981 the longest in mainland Europe) and instead of replacing it, in 2018 the track was completely rebuild (and made quite a lot smoother). The oldest parts of the park are 70 years old (in the Fairytale Forest) and meticulously maintained or (as is the case with the Mushroom Path now, rebuilt). They don't easily tear things down. YES! You went to our national pride: De Efteling! Respect that you went and rode the Baron;-)
Anton Pieck was an artist who designed the Efteling when it started out. Everything that has been added since then still uses that inspiration to keep the design cohesive. Efteling is really big on the feeling, 'de sfeer' (like the Winterefteling) and, as so many have already said, it is a lot less commercial than Disney. It also helps that there is a lot of nature. All the trees give it so much character. Most children have so many fond childhood memories due to the Efteling, but me (as a 40+ lady), love it just as much in the present!🤫
Fairy-tale forest is the oldest part of the park, but still one of the highlights to me (next to Droomvlucht, Vliegende Hollander en Symbolica). Part of the experience is Ravelijn with a medieval dinner afterwards. This needs to be booked on the website (many, many weeks in advance), but a great way to end your day. Oh and lunch at the pannekoeken-restaurant (also, make a reservation). Should you ever go again, try to stay at the hotel for a night; makes it all complete & include Ravelijn (which is situated close to Droomvlucht). Also, close to Ravelijn & Droomvlucht is the crazy house with moving walls.
Efteling is not a typical roller-coaster park. They added those to keep the park 'young', but you can see in those they also added that element of wonder/story/experience.
Carnival truly is a kids attraction, much like Disney's it's a small world. Probably the reason why it came across as annoying.🤭
Try to squeeze in Winterefteling. Totally worth it!

I used to think why watch a show while there is so much other nice interactive things to do in the parc, but I am so glad I finally got around to see them. So the first show is Ravelijn, which is a story involving a wild bird act, horse acrobatics and knight fighting scenes and animatronics. And the final show which I always dismissed is the water show that is at the time the parc closes and it is really spectacular. It at the lake, and it has water fountains and pyrotechnics and is musically supported by almost all the theme songs of the attractions in the parc and a really nice way to close off your visit and stay in that magical moment just a bit longer while leaving. I highly recommend them both, but if you can do only one pick the fountain show at parc closing time. Love the channel, and that you have found a home here with us.

If you don‘t like vogel Rok, perhaps skip Joris en de draak as well. It’s the roughest coaster in the park. Great if you enjoy being tossed around a bit. The monorail is quite nice. It’s like an outside dark ride through het land van laaf. Great to walk through as well, and see all the weird scenes in the houses. There is so much to see in the park! If you go to the madhouse “Villa Volta”, look at the vases on the side when you start to feel noxious, they are always the right way up. Droomvlucht is my favorite ride. I really hope they can fix it. The fountain show at the end of the day is such a nice closing experience. All the tunes from all over the park are used, and it rounds up the day with a impressive bang and splash. Why didn’t you do fata morgana? It is a nice calm boat ride through sights out of arabian nights. Now I want to visit again myself.

Hope you will visit the park in winter style again and go to this attraction! Have a nice weekend.

Efteling has always been an awesome experience and they have added and replaced the right things the last decade. Although the price seems quite high for most dutchies, you can have a wonderful day or weekend for a lot less than a lot of other world famous parks!

Unfortunately It has become to hard to go because I'm in a electric wheelchair now and the transfers are just too hard. But I do mis it every summer. The last time I was in the vogelrok my stomach and I also had an argument, I wanted to go again but my stomach said No. Thanks for bringing back memories.

The first time we went for more than one day was in 2019 and it will be something that we'll keep doing every few years or so. I still miss it so much and I want to go back now. Unfortunately Symbolica was closed when we were there. Also for maintenance. Also Joris en de Draak is completely taken apart, so I think that'll be a long while before it's open again.

I am afraid of Roller Coasters (Well... lets say am partially afraid... since i don't go on those with loops and ups and downs like Baron)... Vogelrok actually was the my first roller coaster ever... cuz my friends wanted me to experience a rollercoaster and said: Lets try the Vogelrok because its in the dark and you don't see much, it might be less scary for you.
    It was less scary.
Afterwards, have done Flying Dutchman and Joris... but i also have ridden Bob one time before its closure, because i wanted to.
I also know how you feel, cuz i also always feel sad leaving Efteling... since it basically pulls you in from the start due to that entrance and it makes you forget your sorrows.

Droom Vlucht (Dream Flight) is closed until march for maintenance (they're lifting the roof (literally) and retracking the ride plus other refurbishments and switching to LED lighting)
If you got sick in Vogel Rok you might not like Villa Volta (haunted mansion with turning room)
And to get a great view of the park and it's hotel(s)/resort(s) Visit the Pagode (next to Symbolica-ish) this flying temple can even show you the Towers of Terror... I mean Tilburg on a clear day (when not distracted by the beauty of the park itself 😅)
And of course if (when) you go again try some of the food, some you might know like the poffertjes (across the vintage steam carrousel) and pizza, bread & pastries at the bakery across Max & Moritz, Chicken in Mrs Boltes Kitchen (might misspell the name) Asian food at the Toko near the Pagode and much much more
Last advice: use their app to see waiting times, opening times etc.

Thanks for making this video, awesome review guys! I'm like you Eric, I don't really like the thrillrides, so when the kids and wife go on it, I usually am the keeper of bags (and eater of food, and drinker of beer) while they're at it. 🤣
Fun fact, de Efteling started out as a couple of sporting fields with a playground next to it (somewhere in the 50's or something), and over the years it grew and grew starting with expanding the playground and the opening of het sprookjesbos, and I think it wasn't till the seventies/ eighties that trillrides came into the park.
In recent times a lot of rides have been updated to suit todays standards, so no more African headhunters with cooking pots, no more squeesed eyes on chinese and japanese figures in carnaval, etc. A lot of people are against it "because it is part of our history", but like with Zwarte Piet (from Sinterklaas), I don't really mind that they change stuff to make it less hurtfull to groups of people. My kids really don't care what colour Piet is, as long as he brings candy and presents 😋
Again, great video, keep at it!
