  • This is just a small conversation on how our lives have changed since moving from US to the Netherlands! If moving to the Netherlands has shown us anything it's that life is good living in Europe, more specifically, living in the Netherlands! Tammy and I have learned to slow down and enjoy the Dutch life and all it has to offer.

I am living abroad myself (Switzerland) for many years being Dutch. It makes is double interesting. It's great to see that you had the courage to take such a big step and live in a very different, more Calvinistic, culture. People often underestimate the impact of living in another country. Language, culture, customs, as well as a common history are suddenly missing. But in the end you learn so much, not least about yourself, and it is so interesting to see the world from a different perspective. Glad to see that you feel happy, and I think the Netherlands should be happy that such wonderful and enterprising people decided to live in the Netherlands.

Regarding having a car: if you live outside the metropolis Randstad (Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague) or not in any other major city you really need a car. Why not ditch making RUclips videos to explain what we already know: that 'expatriates' in the case of couples from the US is just another word for asylum seeker, yet with money and a return airplane ticket instead of a second hand life vest...

It's awesome that you haven't felt the need to drive or miss driving! The biking and public transit are truly awesome here. One thing came as a surprise to me after I'd been here for a while: that non-European drivers licences are only valid for the first 185 days that you've been in the country, and after 185 days you need to exchange your license for a Dutch one. Probably you guys know this already, and if you absolutely never plan on driving it's not an issue. I only mention it because it was a shock to me when I found out that my Canadian licence wasn't valid forever.

If I see the urban sprawl connected by stroads in the US with all these secluded houses and no reason to go outside other than to get in a car and drive to do shopping or commute, I can't help but wonder what destruction it must render to social activities and meeting and accepting others peculiarities. Separating people living and their economic activities was a bad idea I think. No idea how one would measure that though.

It's amazing to see the flip side of what people enjoy being in the Netherlands. Flip side to my own experiences, and reasons for me to leave the Netherlands for NA. Guess I never thought of it this way, took it for granted and started a dislike to the common things.
Thanks for sharing and being honest about what changed your lives.

    Hi Eric and Tammy,
How are you? I watch a video from you every now and then and always like it a lot. And you just seem like nice people to me.
We live in the green heart of the Netherlands in an old farmhouse where we have a bed and breakfast. Come over and stay for a night or so, and make sure to bring your bikes. It is a beautiful area for cycling.
A small gift from us for the nice videos you make. no strings attached, we don't need any advertising or anything like that. Do not mention our name or company anywhere.
Just meet and have a little fun and a new part of the Netherlands to discover.
What do you think about it? Good idea?

I liked this video a lot, especially the interplay between you two. To protect you from possibly too high expectations, all the cities have decent or good public transportation but that changes significantly when you go to the more rural areas. I live in Zeeland and wouldn't be able to leave my village without a car. Not that I'm complaining, I was born and raised in this village.

Every time I am depressed with life in the Netherlands I try to think of a country where I would want to migrate too and I always come to the same conclusion. I want to live in a place with good social security, education and healthcare and no other country is a real improvement over the Netherlands. The best thing is to live here and go on vacation to other countries.
But really happy to hear you consider life in the Netherlands an improvement.

If you cannot afford one get a rope and a magnet and fish one out of the many canals, there are hundreds under the water🚲

He feels free over there, but he us to still work while he's in his 70th year! We are not Utopia, but life here is better. We live near Rotterdam, have a car (I'm invalid) and making friends is easy! BUT... making REAL friends is hard! I hope for real that you have a great life here!

Loved that video. I am so happy you two are so happy here in the Netherlands. I have never been in the states so can't really compare. But at the moment I see so much shootings and aggression coming from the states that I am almost to scared to go there. Mind that's the media for you, things might be not that bad when you over there. It also must be a beautiful country to with nice parks and mountains. Never mind every country has it's own beauty. But yes, here we value the person over goods and don't like it if anything is getting "to much"! That includes money, food and anything else. Hence the saying....Doe maar gewoon dan doe je al gek genoeg".
Nice to hear you also made friends with dare 2 go Dutch. I hope they will settle in as nicely as you two. I was worried about them as it was difficult for them to find an apartment but now I understand they got one today.
Hopefully they can start enjoying life now.

it's good that you point out that we Dutch don't always know how good it is here for example families bringing kids to school, the public transportation. Although the public transportation in the north of the Netherlands and other more remote areas, there is room for improvement. But we love to complain about everything.
Do you have plans to do a video on Dutch music? Like the classics in Dutch: André Hazes (senior), BLof, Nick & Simon, Marco Borsato, Guus Meeuwis? And also other artists from the Netherlands: Venga Boys, Martin Garrix, Tiesto, Armin Van Buren, Afro Jack, Anouk, Krezip, Di-rect, Suzan & Freek to name a few? I would like to know what you beforehand thought of Dutch music and if you like the songs in Dutch or not?
