You guys should be more critical of Southgate Rio. I don't understand why the English media has such a soft-touch approach to the England manager. He is inept at this level, and he gets caught out every time. Having skilled players does not mean that you'll win. They need to be playing to system that suits them, and that is the manager's job.

Access mate, they want access as pundits so tow the line. I'll say it for him... Southgate is a pub vibes manager, championship level, should have been fired after that pathetic second half bottle job mentality against Italy 3 years ago. We're going to crash out... just a matter of time!

It's because Southgate has done something no England manager has been able to do for nearly 30 years: he's created an environment where the players actually look forward to playing for their country. We shouldn't be too quick to forget that. I agree with the scrutiny of his tactical decision making though. If anything he should stay in the FA as a head of dept, but England now need a Nagelsmann or another more confident modern manager to guide the team forward.

I think that’s the problem. Pundits ain’t keeping it real for years. It takes foreign pundits to say the truth, because they have no biased takes because they’re putting football before friendships.
There’s to much of a boys club mentality in this country, hence why Southgate got appointed for the job. On what merit is he qualified to manage the best players of this country?… none
Remember, England have won nothing since 1966… it tells you something is seriously wrong

I completely put the blame on Shitegate. Selection stank and tactics stank. Has midfielders/forwards who want ball to feet, come short and don't run in behind, playing counter attack & long ball. Has defenders can progess the ball, playing hoof ball. Players who mainly play mid block ot high line, all in thier own half. If you don't wanna change your style to suit the players you have, then dont send the players home that actually can play your system🤦🏿‍♂️

Bizarre comment seeing as England tried to play it out from the back most of the time. No, the real problem is that Southgate is trying to play too many attacking players just because on paper they're high quality players, but the team was missing a solid defensive midfielder. Phillips used to do this well; neither Rice nor TAA can do it. So the pipeline from defence through midfield to attack was faltering every time.
The people who say that Southgate is too negative, defensive etc. have it completely backwards: the problem is that he's listening too much to people who insist that Foden, Bellingham and Rice must all play in the side. He should go back to what he did in previous tournaments: not listen to any of the moron pundits, and put out the team HE thinks will work best.

It’s all deja vu for me (German) - when Hansi Flick played 3 different starting line ups in the 3 different group stage games of Qatar cos he didn’t know what his best squad was(!) up until the tournament. That’s not the time for too many experiments. You should have figured that out by the first match. Besides Gareth isn’t on his own either, he’s got an entire staff. If those guys can’t figure out how to make these brilliant players a proper team they need to be replaced. Also Hansi Flick preferred his ex Bayern “mates” over the ones that were the best performers in the leagues that year. You need someone in charge with a different idea of modern football plus who knows success!

So many problems. Rice was one of our worst players, tbf. But maybe carrying Trent in midfield has given him PTSD. But Rice isn't good enough under pressure to play out from the back. It’s a real tough one, we’ve been saying for years the same things about Gareth, on that part I don’t see any growth tactically, he’s not a great tactician and game management is off. Im not sure there is a plan out of position tbh.
In terms of just lineup changes, the most sensible thing to do to keep your stars on the pitch is move Bellingham to the box to box 8 and Foden to the 10. Get Gordon in at Left Wing and get him and Saka trying to get in behind. Get Palmer on for either Foden or Saka as a sub not Bowen. The Kane problem was the same at the World Cup too, brilliant finisher but is as slow as a horse cart and walks about a lot and cant press effectively and doesnt suit our style of play really, but as you say he only needs one chance to score. But I do think Gareth needs to get into him a bit and say your the leader & captain of this team, put in that effort and lead by example. Thought Watkins looked bright after coming on but it’s probably because he actually tried to get in behind.
Mainoo good little player but I genuinely think Wharton is the perfect partner for Rice and is an exceptional talent, far better midfielder already than TAA in that position so cant really understand this ‘experiment’ with Trent which all feels a bit Hollywood - but to include a new CM we have to leave out either Jude or Foden, wont happen.

Nothing won since 1966 remember that… ask yourself why?
I personally believe the FA or whatever body in charge of selecting managers is the issue. Southgate has shown us his card since the beginning, he’s never been great tactically or had great game man management.
He got done by Mancini and aging Italian side on national tv in front of millions, the FA rewards him with a contract extension..
I think the sooner we make the appointees of managers accountable, the more pressure they will have to make better decisions in the future.

Regarding the team I'd move Saka to the left as he's proven at Arsenal he can score with his right and he's also played there, bring Palmer in drop Trent and put Foden in the 10.
On the other hand you could go 352 Stones, Guehi, Walker same midfield as above Saka and Bowen wingbacks Kane and probably Watkins for his pace but I prefer Tony over Watkins.

Yeah they are stars at their clubs, but what role do they play in their teams? Which ones are stars at their club for being the player who controls the game in the middle, dictates the pace, keeps the ball ticking over and therefore defending with the ball and keeping possession? Mainoo is the nearest to this mould.
Maybe the reason they excel at their clubs is because they have players around them that complete a well balanced team.
Yeah it is great and an asset to have players who can create wonder moments but if you can’t control games by keeping possession we are always going to have hairy moments as soon as the opposition turns it up a notch, luckily the opposition only seem to turn it up once they have conceded and are chasing the game.
The best way England should play if they don’t have the players to control the game, is counter attacking football with a fast front three.

Cole Palmer is one of the stand out players in the little games we played in the lead up to the Euros. Cole Palmer pretty much when he left City to go to Chelsea single handedly made Chelsea not have their most embarrassing season in history because that's what was about to happen. 33 appearances Chelsea with 22 goals... How can a player like that not even get a chance to impact the game at 60 minutes when both games went flat? We need a formation change i feel. Midfield is too loaded for the ball always to go backwards and because the midfield is so stacked and on top of each other, Kane comes into the midfield so when midfield get the ball, there is nobody to get the ball to in an offensive position. Feel like we need 2 up top, to do what Watkins didn when he came on, made runs in behind stretching the defence. He came on and we got our first corner within 2 minutes. If we don't see some drastic changes against Slovenia then Gareth should just leave.

England is like an overweight boxer with a lame left hand, swaggering around thinking he can knock anyone out. We land a heavy punch and then try and dance to the final round.
We are not using our left hand side very well. Foden can play wide left because he has done it but if he needs to be told to stay out wide then, tell him. Alternatively, there are specialists who bring more to the left side. (Gordon comes to mind) but having Trippier at left back does not work because he is so right footed he is unable to be effective. It seems we are waiting for a player or 2 to be fit and playing with Stones injured as well.
Overall the players are giving their all but they are confused and not organised. Foden was doing a high press on the right hand side of the pitch at one point and Declan Rice got turned round and did not know who to mark for trying to mark everyone.
If there is a simple system they know trust and can play to then they will be a real force. But i think it might be too late for that.

Also why haven't we got a genuine left back cover ? other than Luke Shaw, So because we have Kyle as the designated right back does that mean that Trippier because he misses out on that spot we need to play him on the other side, I think the problem is Gareth has a buddy system(favourite players etc) To go far in this comp we need him to be literally ruthless like Jose is and stop trying to put square pegs in round holes!!! Bellingham hardly played 10 for England in general.
Saka missed few call ups because of injuries.
Stones has been rested at times at CB.
Guehi has hardly played at CB.
Trippier was not being played LB in the qualifiers.
Southgate was playing Chilwell, Konsa, Gomez, Colwill there.
England was playing Mainoo in midfield in qualifiers + friendlies along with Henderson, Gallagher.
Southgate also rested Kane a bunch of times in qualifiers, gave Watkins, Toney fair opportunities which they haven't taken.
Southgate the last year and half was busy trying players out rather then build a team that had chemistry that was ready for the Euro's like teams like Denmark have.

The team is weak. The fans, the leadership, the players, the pundits and the opposition KNOWS THIS. The problem is that everyone expects them to win the tournament despite the huge well-known weaknesses. They need love right now. That's the only thing that will help them forge forward. Too much criticism will just make them return home even sooner and a few of them, I bet, will just retire from international competition like Messi did after 2014. It's too much pressure. It's like they are expected to just walk-over the opposition simply because they have Bellingham and Foden in the team. English fans just expect too much. Maybe it's because the EPL is the best league in the world although it has not produced any international team success since 1966. It's crazy.

I don’t think it’s that at all. I think the fans want to see some exciting football. The players are super talented and all have flaire. The problem is the manager, the FA and the pundits that have defended him for years. England fans hope to win but don’t expect to. If England go out playing amazing football most fans will be happy. There’s no cohesion at all with this coach, it’s slow, boring and there is no clear structure or style.

Plus bring Foden to 10, Jude alongside Declan and Eze or Gordon on the left. Shaw will also be a huge benefit with an overlap.

I think we should play 3-4-2-1.
Put foden and Bellingham as the two 10's, TAA at right wing back where he can do what he does best from the position he does it best, put Mainoo or Wharton next to Rice, Saka at left wing back, Guehi, Stones and Walker as the back three. If Kane is not fit enough to press or won't stay high up the pitch play Watkins or Toney.
We lack control of midfield. This way we'd have two in front of the defense, both capable of receiving the ball in tight spaces and playing out, you'd have the best player in la liga and the best player in the premier legue playing in a position very similar to the one that made them the best player in the league, you'd have Trent's passing/crossing range coming form a position where he could use it effectively, you'd have pace, experience and ball playing ability in defence. It might stop Pickford lumping it too...

  • @kenetto7659

I would switch to a back three and deploy Saka as a left wing-back and TAA on the right to have pace on both flanks and more balanced in terms of attacking threat. Mainoo to act as a deep-lying playmaker as it would help England with playing through first line of pressure (something they struggled with against Denmark). Kane needs to stop dropping deep and hug the defensive line instead to become more of a poacher or target man (or rotate position with Bellingham to make runs in behind).
    Line-up:
    Pickford
    Walker Stones Guehi
    TAA Mainoo Rice Saka
    Foden Bellingham
    Kane

Rio, everything you discussed should have been done in friendlies, not experimenting in the tournament. We should know about all these players, from being played in the friendlies last several years, but they never got played. Southgate kept playing the same guys in friendlies, never allowing others to fit in or test themselves.
No Euro or World Cup has been won with a mediocre manager. We won't win because tactical awareness, adaptability, and brave decisions are required to overcome the fine-line margins in the big games.

Very simple Rio. 4-3-3/ 3-4-3 play Trent right back, Walker centre back with Guehi and Gomez, then Trent can step into midfield with Rice, Bellingham and Foden in the middle. Saka,Kane and either Palmer or Gordern left forward. It' would be 3-4-3 and defensively its 4-3-3. This would allow Foden and/or Bellingham to be more free when attacking and make runs off Kane.

Either put Trent in RB or bring him in as a sub. Foden can't play LW he needs to play LM and that solves half your problems. High press and I think you need a striker who's more active to spark some energy into the press and counter attack. If you leave big name players off the staring XL you can always bring them on if you need to change the game. If I was honest I would say he needs to pick up his sacks and actually pick a team with a style not just a group of talent on the pitch.

A revolution. here goes, Back 5 Bowen, Walker, Stones, Guehi, Gordon. Rice holding in front, Bellingham and Palmer, then Foden playing off Kane. 5-1-2-1-1. Logic is pace and naturally footed players at wing back, solid back 3 means only Rice needed in front of them, Bellingham and Palmer pulling the strings and Foden playing just behind Kane who has the luxury of staying up top.

    ----------------- Pickford -----------------
    Walker - Stones - Guehi - Saka
    ---------------- Wharton -------------------
    --------- Rice -------- Bellingham
    Bowen ---- Watkins ---- Gordon
Some stars left out to create a more balanced team.
Try Saka at left back until Shaw is fit. We need a left footer there to give us proper width. Saka has played there for Arsenal and could do well.
Bring Wharton into CDM. Rice doesn't perform well there on the ball. He plays more advanced for Arsenal. Wharton can turn defence into attack quicker.
Put Bowen on RW while Shaw is injured and Saka is at LB. Closest thing we have to Saka. You can switch him with Palmer if it's not working but I would try Bowen first as he will press and stretch play.
Replace Kane with Watkins. Watkins is not as good at shooting but still scores a lot of goals, he will press, and gives us another option in attack because he can run in behind. Him stretching teams will leave space for Bellingham and Rice to get chances.
Gordon on the LW. Put someone there who actually wants to play there to give us some threat down that side.
Have Kane, Foden and Arnold as subs. Good subs to have.
