God bless them, but they were both so bad at communication. Love them both and I will never forgive the writers for what happens when Maddie comes back home for season four. Taking some time off and going Chicago was ok, but goodness gracious, having her marry that loser was infuriating.
I think what Sam said to him about what's best for Maddie -- meaning David wasn't -- had weakened his confidence in having a relationship with Maddie at that moment. (Sam entered David's apartment late at night uninvited and just shows up in his bedroom. Maddie never knew it but she dodged a bullet with Sam!) I think David really wanted to say something. You can see him tearing up but he didn't because was letting her go for her own good. But of course he changed his mind a few minutes later then it was Maddie who didn't want to talk. These scenes were good but exhausting.
go watch the episode before -"Maddie's turn to cry". He thought they had it all settled when she came to his place in the middle of the night to tell him "I hate you, David Addison!" and he replied "I hate you too, Maddie Hayes, I've always hated you!" He couldn't understand for the life of him why she was so angry at him now and that paralyzed him. She knew damn well he loved her.
Loved this show when it was on the air. Now I'm eternally annoyed by their HORRIBLE communciation skills and the constant fighting. Maddie is a nightmare - and I say this as a woman. Cybill Sheperd can't act. Aside from "12 Monkeys" this was Bruce Willis' best role. He had a firm handle on his character and outacted her in every single scene in every single episode.
Please! There was NO reason for David to say nothing at this point! She was practically begging him to tell her how he felt. And if he really wanted her - here is where he needed to step up and be a man. I truly believe this is a huge reason for her behavior after they made love - she didn't know if he was coming or going - um you know what I mean lolll
you can tell when harmon punches willis stunt double because the doubles hair isnt as slciked down in the back as willis yes I loved this show back then but once she got pregnant in real life the show was pretty much finished
@@s13rr4buf3 yeah, which is a b/s statement to make to begin with. Like " you feel what i feel, so I won't say it. I will let you guess". Because , isn't it, a relation is based on guessing. And if you " guess" wrong, well, that's on you. How silly is that.. David should be able to express his feelings- if indeed he has them. But that kind of mentality comes from a place where "men are not supposed to show / talk about their emotions". A very toxic masculinity that was omnipresent in the 80'. Things changed a lot since then, but there are still quite a lot of ppl who still think the same.
@@Seagull_J.Livingston You know, I agree with you completely. Part of it is the toxicity of the 80s, and part of that is the sexism of all the writers back then, but another part is the need for dramatic tension. Somebody has to be a dick (and it's usually Maddie, honestly) in order to keep the lovers unhappy and under conflict of some sort. Peace, health, and happiness is boring, unfortunately. So then we end up with these characters that we love and look up to, modeling toxic, cruel behavior to each other, just to keep the show running another year or two.
I love the in-and-out of the elevator stuff. What i don't understand about this scene is Maddie FINALLY lays it on the line with David. She admits there's something between them and she asks David how he feels about her and what he's prepared to offer her. Why should she pick him over Sam? What i don't understand i why David says nothing. Why doesn't he tell Maddie he doesn't want her to marry Sam because he's in love with her? I always though David would have fought for Maddie here.
weell in in fiction tv series life aint perfect besides if she wound up with mark harmon then the viewers really would have been pissed look how they made her character when she was coming back to the workplace she decides to marry that wimp for what reason again I forgot this behavior is very childish and she calls david a child women be crazy
The Sam character is in the original pilot script. In drafts he was eventually dropped as clutter. There's even a outtake scene of young David talking about that stiff Phi Beta Kappa on the couch, and she says he's a better man than you. Caron just worked him back in. S1 was just a few episodes and exposition. S2 was "The Dream Sequence Always Rings Twice" fantasy played out over the whole season in 1985 S3 was "Atomic Shakespeare" fantasy played out over the whole season (Goeth thou to HELL) with him finally wearing her down and having sex with her....while Agnes and Viola build their matrimonial relationship in the outer office of Padua. Then Caron and Daniel realized they were stuck. Who was going to stick around for another year or two of the final act of Atomic Shakespeare with them both tame and respectful. So s4 became a stupid ugly mess. Back to Goeth Thou to HELL!
exactly my point skywithdiamonds. Her behavior made no sense, and the "nothing of your goddamn business" wasn't helpful either. "I haven't said yes YET" was over the line. I get that she was trying to get him to admit his feelings, but she was doing it just the wrong way - she made it a competition where it shouldn't be.
Maddies father and David were on a plane once and David told her father that he had asked Maddie to marry him and she said no. However, the audience never witnessed any such proposal.
@@santachorry Not exactly. David told Mr. Hayes that he had gone to her house, ready to confess his love for Maddie and that he wanted to marry her. But another man answered the door, so he didn't get the chance to ask. As was chronicled in the season 3 episode "Blonde On Blonde"
You know...that hurt just as much now to see this scene as it did back in the 80s when me and my momma was sitting on the couch watching it!😭😭😭😭😭🥰😉

You're wrong. This clip is the only thing I've seen her in except Last Picture Show a long time ago. She did a great acting job in both.
I loved this show just started watching it again!
willis once he did die hard and it was a big success he wanted out to concentrate on his film career aint saying thats bad but i am saying
My favourite episode ever!
David is such a coward.

Right before they make love, he explains why he doesn't have to say anything -- because they both know it, and they both feel it.
@Sue You're 100% correct

I remember they put a phony picture on the enquirer of them getting married like a dummy I got so excited and believed it

I wonder that too. Maybe he felt he shouldn't have to say anything because she should know? Or she was forcing his hand? Idk

Is that all there is to this episode? I mean apart from the final big scene. Where is the rest of the ep? Please?
David's such a coward!!!
Why
He sure is!
This plot line shouldn’t have happened .
Purtroppo Marco in quei due giorni non ti ho conosciuto bene
Did David ever propose to Maddie? I can't remember.
No
