- showing how I get the marbled effect on leather using thickened water and oil based dyes on vegetable tanned leather.
immediately after pulling up the leather I do a thorough water rinse NO FRICTION OR IT WILL SMEAR!! just let the water run over the piece for a few minutes to get the majority of the starch off.
Seal the dye thoroughly with Resolene and/or saddle lac. You will want a good acrylic to prevent it from bleeding.
thanks for watching!

We need more vids from you my friend. I”ve seen them all and it’s all good info, please try to find time for more. Would love to see some of the died leather on a finished product and some of ur holster designs. 👍
Thank you so much! Find me on IG/FB @Rogueapparatus or TikTok @rogueapparatus_leather
That amazing looking. Thanks for the video
Thank you! I made a few knife sheath inlays with this material
Very, very useful tutorial. Thank you very much!
You're most welcome! It's a very uncommon technique that I might be doing wrong but it still garners some cool results!
Thanks for sharing--love the way this looks vs other marbling techniques--and seems more like hydro dip than other marbling methods--definitely going to try this!
It really is basically a hydro dip. Very similar to acrylic paint but the oils make the result totally unpredictable and unique!
First time seeing this process Fascinating is an understatement. Thanks Mike! Definitely will try this
Make sure to have some gloves and a few containers you don't mind ruining 😅
That’s amazing
Very nice... interesting... a must try..
It's a fun project. The results will differ with different thickness of water as well as different colors of dye will react very differently on the water
👍🏽👍🏽
What are you using to thicken the water?
@@kcg3927 tapioca starch. And I try to usually only make it like a little thicker than sweet tea
@@rogueapparatus6414 thx for sharing.
Spends 20 bucks on jacquard carrageenan and all the alpha6 acrylic paint not knowing I could've did this and use the pro dye I have gallons of.
It does produce a very different look than acrylic paint though. They are cool for different reasons
Sorry to bother you, I'm new to leather, can you tell me what color you're using and what else can I use instead of tapioca starch? Thanks a lot
I hear carrigeenan works. I've not tried it though. The colors shown are black and red Fiebings ProDye
Thank you very much 😊
Would gelatin work too?
Possibly, but I don't know for sure. Only one way to find out!
Starches tend to be the preferred choice. I would imagine gelatin might be hard to wash off. Buuut maybe not?
Why not use the oil dye on just water for good separation?
You can, it behaves different. I like a slower bleed with thickened water
are you turkish??
Negative, but this technique was used by the Turks to make textiles and panels for book covers for centuries. I just modified it a little for leather
@@rogueapparatus6414 ok ty for teaching me how to do this :3
