Building Better Bending

  • Hey everyone! Here's the next episode of Brewster's Millions Of Rants with Building Better Bending. This episode revolves around a series of simple bending phrases pulled from a recent recording session for a new song from my new album - which I'm currently recording! After recording this song the other night, I discovered these areas of my bending technique that I've neglected over the years, and once I noticed the benefit of playing through this part of the song, I decided to create this lesson to share the concept with viewers out there - so let's dive in!
The ideas shared in this lesson were pulled from a new song I'm recording called 'GAR' - which is a tribute to the late-great filmmaker George A. Romero. The song in question features an eerie chord progression that moves between two chords, while the melodic bending motif moves between two single bent notes on the guitar. After that section is repeated a few times, another chord progression takes over and the single bent notes change into a classic-sounding unison bending motif.
After working with this song and laying the parts down for the recording a few nights ago, I realized/remembered how beneficial working on simple repetitive phrases like this can really boost your technique, muscle memory, playing ability, coordination, and much more - not to mention the additional benefit of strengthening the fingertip calluses of your frethand!
Needless to say, if you're interested in improving your string bending technique, improving the strength/control/precision of your bending technique, would like another behind-the-scenes look at my new instrumental music project 'Nilbog,' or maybe you're just curious what all the fuss is about - this lesson is totally for you! Give this episode a view, leave some comments/feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!

I dig all the John Carpenter soundtracks as well as Romero. I practice bending with my tuner. Smaller strings are easier to bend but, you have to bend them farther.

Dave, it’s great to hear more of your music. That was Spooky, Pink Floyd vibes, it’s a visual type of song like it was written for a scene in a movie.
Would love to hear more of your tips to improve bending. My bends are so pitchy. Really frustrating after playing as long as I have.

I'm embarrassed to say but I've been playing guitar for over 30 years, have a BA in music, and a guitar teacher and my left hand SUCKS. I'm mostly a rhythm guitar player and also play classical guitar. I am not a shredder and have never been real comfortable doing solos. I can do them and can move my fingers, I just don't know what to do with them other than noodling. I finally recently start to address this weakness and made the same observation about my finger tips and left hand feeling like Superman. I had to look back at my journey to see how I never excelled at this. My first teacher was not a shredder and then my college professor was a classical guitar teacher. I never really had to do much bending. I just developed my rhythm, speed, finger picking, composition and arrangement. I also tried to arrange my music to hide the fact that there were no guitar solos. It also turned out that all I really needed were simple adjustments to my technique and exercises. Almost like little life hacks for guitar solos.

Cool sinister, foreboding sounding piece of music. I agree, bending exactly to the note U want is definitely challenging. Thanks.

Great topic. There's 10's of thousands of people that all they care about is sounding like a typewriter...which is cool. It's kind of a one trick pony though. With people like Shawn Lane, Paul Gilbert, Rusty Cooley..what exactly else are you going to accomplish? All of the aforementioned are also masters at bending. Let's not even get started on Moore, Gilmore, Lynch...etc. Strings are still (relatively) cheap. Buy several packs and get your bend on. Learn to sing in between the lighting arpeggios. Learn the intervals in a specific scale, semi, whole or even 1.5 or 2 (if you're brave🤣) that you can bend a note to. I would also add that working on your vibrato is just as important. Sorry for the thesis....I get excited about this stuff. /guitar nerd
    Great as always, David🤘

in my personal "experience" i've found some guitarist are born "benders" and others (which are otherwise good players) just haven't got the determination to get the bend pitch right.....i'm a BIG bender and allways have been.....not so much shredding but bending...yep....cheers.

I like it a lot! Has a bit of Pink Floyd vibes in there along with the Goblinses. Great stuff! 🥰
And yea, bending from half step to a whole step takes a lot of ear concentration. I was just practicing that last week.
Doesn't the Bass going to B flat technically change the root though? Like E minor over B flat?.
Mayhaps "your bass player" is just messin with ya.😉
Edit: The melody guitar makes it all Goblin. Now I don't really hear the Floyd. Funny how one part can change things that much.
