- Hey everybody! Here's the next episode of Three-For-All with 3 Shawn Lane Licks From 1991. It's been a few years since I've featured the late-great Shawn Lane's incredible music on the LNL channel, and after noticing more requests piling up for Shawn, I figured it was finally time to grab a few more ideas from this brilliant and sorely missed legend - let's dive in!
The ideas in this lesson came from a video posted on Shawn's official RUclips channel called "Shawn Lane Shredding On A White Fender Stratocaster 1991," which captures him playing that guitar in particular for over seven minutes. The footage is great, and aside from the blistering shred licks he was playing, he also threw out some beyond-tasteful Hendrix-inspired bluesy licks and phrases - which is what this lesson focuses on specifically.
The ideas shared here include a tasty open-position based bluesy phrase, a slick phrase featuring a blurry Dorian-based legato run, a super-expressive phrase using lots of interesting string bending, an authentic Hendrix "string grab" bending phrase, and more!

I attended a clinic in 1996 in Belgium, chatted for an hour with Shawn, bought the guitar he did the clinic with and had it autographed with a Ying Yang sign.
After that I was invited to have dinner with him and his crew.
A highlight in my long life, together with my various meetings with Allan H.

I've seen that video of him on the white Strat. I felt the same way when I heard him slow down a bit and get soulful and bluesy. Shawn was a big fan of Billy Gibbons.

Have you heard Shawn playing the Hotel California solo live in 1988? It’s better than the original imo.
Most of the Hendrix-sounding stuff was actually Hendrix. From "Peace in Mississsipi" which he covered on his album THE TRI-TONE FASCINATION.

I got into Shawn through Alex Masi - who of course you pictured from the reverse of his "Attack of the Neon Shark" album. He's a massively underrated and virtually unknown guitarist who deserves a lot more exposure.....you could do a video on him and not even scratch the surface :)
As far as Shawn, I can't add anything to his legend, but I do appreciate your amazing work.

This is like christmas and my birthday falling on halloween. Shawn was at another level. He was not from this planet. Thanks for sharing this with us. There is a lot to learn from Shawn, not just his speed and dexterity but beautiful chord voicings and cool tones. Maybe cover his gear in another vid. Rock on Dave!

I saw Shawn Lane abusing a guitar (early 90‘s) at the Frankfurt Musikmesse. Mindblowing experience!
And he wrote everything on piano…. it was scary watching him do that speed on the keys
Eddie is the best rock player of all time, but Shawn is the pinnacle of technique combined with imagination and melody. He's still never been topped and is greatly missed.

The white strat in Shawn’s video belonged to Barry Bays and that’s Barry talking to Shawn in the video in case anyone is wondering. Barry is an old dear friend of mine and Shawn also and well a lot of people in Shaws circle around Memphis and the delta. If anyone is wondering anything about Shawn just ask. God bless ☮️ ❤️
Why do all of Shawn’s vids have the worst video quality. All of them looked like film was under water .

Pleaseeeee do a Derek Frigo three for all/chord play if you can… Enuff Z’Nuff in my opinion is the most underrated band ever, and those first three albums with Derek are magic.
You need to do a video on how you get all the different tones because you nail it every time.

Hey! Once upon a time I had a Seymour Duncan Cool Rails single coil in the neck, but that was a few years ago.
