I love mine. I found it to be superior to my stop blocks because I can do several different measurements where as stop blocks would require me to reset them to different lengths. I think I commented about this thing on an old video of yours years ago. I bought mine when it was a Kickstart project.
Nice review! I didn’t consider the issue with a grippy wheel and knots impacting measurements and it’s nice to see that the M1 supports angled cuts! I think the M1 can be used in conjunction with a stop block pretty nicely to address the speed issue. Get an accurate measurement with the M1, move the stop block into position, move the M1 arm out of the way, cut, repeat, profit!
Something I didn’t catch on this until watching your video: the REEKON calibrates to the tape measure you use to mark the initial 6’. This brings to point the importance of using the same measuring tape for the entire project for accuracy.
I bought one of these over a year ago. Used it twice and took it off of my saw. It sits on a shelf as a reminder of money wasted that could have gone to something more useful
This would be most handy when cutting from a cut list. For most projects, I measure then cut one board at a time. The only time I cut multiples is for identical parts, which stop blocks work fine. But if you had a list of a bunch of cuts of different lengths, this would make very short work of it. I could see this used in a semi-production type of shop.
When this was first being advertised as a kickstart project, it was being sold as having BT connectivity and an ap that would let one person be measuring/nailing, and another cut man on the ground. As a framer/builder/GC, I can definitely see that as being a major pro for this device, and cutting down on time and poor communications.
@@orangeduc3129 As far as I know it is, he just didn't use it in the video. You may want to check the manufacturer's website for a full list of currently available features.
Hi there, you were talking about that Styrofoam case that this came in. Well, I bought one of these a year ago, and I sprayed mine with the bedliner spray, and it came out really nice. I put a cheap locking mechanism and a carrying handle on it. When it's not on the shopsaw it will keep it secure and looking nice. I just wanted to let you know. Have a wonderful day, and we love your content. Keep it up; I appreciate it!
I received one of these as a gift. It was neat to have but definitely not necessary. My biggest issue was that after a month or two the wheel arm would no longer stay retracted in the up position.
I spent hours considering whether to purchase this thing during the sale. Watched several videos until I finally found someone make an actual miter cut which, in my opinion, is where precision matters most. In the end, I couldn't find a review good enough to convince me to make the purchase. This video would have made the difference. I am one of those folks with the rolling cart so this tool would be of benefit but, my plan is to eventually set up to use stop blocks. Time will tell which comes first; stop blocks or the Reekon going on sale again that will determine whether I buy one or not. Thanks, Matt, for another great video.
Nice review! I was relly thinking of getting this until you came up with the cons, which are big for my dusty shop and wonky boards. Going to your stop block vid next.
Seemed like it would be a great tool. Thank you for the review. My experience was not so good. My installation required the adapter fence. ( Not Available 07-16-2023). Tried to make my own., I gave up and I am in the process of returning the thing. I so wanted it to work. Beware if you need the adapter fence you may be disappointed.
Thank you for reviewing this tool, Matt! I sometimes become enamored with a cool concept and want so bad, just to find the obsession was mightier than the actual usefulness of the tool. Like when I had to have the hedgehog guide. I mean, it's useful, but I don't use it as much as I thought I would. I looked at this gadget a bunch of times.
Thank you the clarification I purchased one during prime days and yes I missed something lol prime days it was $119.00 great tool to have when doing cutting boards thank you for the content
It looks like it could be a nice addition to a shop. In particular, it would make setting up stop blocks for repetitive cuts quicker and more accurate. Instead of running a board through the device 10 times, stopping at a reading of 5.25" to make a cut, to make 10 pieces 5.25" long; you could just use the device to measure 5.25", set the stop block to the end of the board, and make 10 cuts.
@@Surmoka Not really. This tool allows you to precisely measure, and hold, the length of cut while leaving both hands free to clamp the stop block in place. Can you do it with just a tape measure? Of course! We've been doing that for decades. The point is that this tool makes the process quicker, easier, and more precise.
@@Surmoka That's easier said than done. What he has in the video is NOT just a tape measure stuck to a table. And while you can certainly do that, actually doing it in a way that correct and accurate is going to be a fussy process. And doing what he has in the video is a lot more work and money. That doesn't mean it might not be worth the effort, but I don't think that's a valid "just do this instead" compared to a device that clamps on, has built-in calibration, then just works.
Nice digital yard stick , but for $150.00 I will keep using the stop blocks . Great video ,full of info . Cheers btw…. AA’batteries are about 20 cents ea if bought in a lot of 100 . We snag the 100 box for the Christmas lights etc from the big A .
Regarding the lack of batteries, I'm wondering if that might be something to do with less complications with shipping regulations. In the UK, if something has batteries, there's a lot of extra paperwork and red tape to ship it.
Actually I thought about buying one but I've heard about the cons from another reviewer. Dust on a miter saw is just normal even with dust collection running. So the fact that you would have to clean your board everytime you go to make a cut is to time consuming. I'm with everyone else here. My repeatable stop block system from Kreg is working good on my setup
Thank you for going through the calibration and the issues you had, my experience was similar! I was to the point I was about to throw it in trash before I stumbled into the solution!
Have you tried cutting 4 pieces with 45° miters on each end to see if they would fit together perfectly for a frame? I was waiting for that to happen when you were cutting those 45's. Also, many thanks for purchasing and trying out this tool for the rest of us. 👍 Cheers!
This! Really wanted to see this. The miter on trim pieces with uneven surfaces are difficult to measure with a measuring tape, this should solve this issue nicely.
Thanks for the video. Once this is calibrated, does one have to recalibrate it? Say it gets turned off and not being used for awhile, will it need to be recalibarated?
Need 6' on both sides of mitre saw station to calibrate. My workshop only has 60" on either side of saw blade. I took mine back to Lowe's when I found out. They have a T1 Tomahawk tape measure that's still in prototype that will be released soon.
Iv been on the fence about this ever since it launched on Kickstarter. I almost backed it then, and iv almost bought it many times since then My concern was accuracy, that has been addressed and I will be making the purchase
if I remember correctly, it pairs with their tape measure the tape is party f-ing cool, you can take maltabel measurements save them on the tape go to the saw down load those measurements to that tool and it gives you basically a cut list.
My builder bought me one these for my job site saw. It works very well and was impressed with its accuracy. But having to cut long thin base boards, bulky long shelf boards , 45's on everything was not practical for this device. It was much more easy just to use the tape measure. Running long pieces and trying to hold them accurately took more time.
Limited space for a stop-block system is the only reason I could see for buying it. I like the idea, and I wouldn't be surprised if, in the future, something like that might end up in a high-end miter saw.
I could consider adding this to my shop... if you don't give it away AND you're still using it a good amount of time six months from now. Any chance you can give us an update video some time down the road like you have with the Festool dust extractor (if memory serves)?
I own one and I like it , almost a year and still accurate, you can use it in reverse as well and I use it on my mft3 for the panels of my kitchens , overall it's a nice accessory, is it necessity? I will say no but it's nice to have , I am waiting for their measuring tape , overall I like the product
I think I remember seeing a BT connected tape that works with this? So if you measure something, the cutman gets the dimentions automatically. I'm pretty sure it was this unit.
I have been thinking about getting the M1 but I havent yet. You should do a video of their T1 tape measure. I just got mine in the mail 2 weeks ago and I love it.
I think carpenters who do residential trim carpentry would be the perfect application for this tool. You could go pull your measurements for the entire house for baseboards and door casings and make all your cuts wayyyyyy faster than measuring every single piece with the tape measure. And especially since most trim carpenters work with primed MDF and sanded poplar, the wheel would stay clean and accurate
Side note: I’ve seen adds for a tape measure that they’re developing where you can measure and save your measurement in a cut list on the digital display on the tape measure. I think if you used that in tandem with this product, you could trim out a house significantly faster than the traditional way where you write your cut list on a scrap piece
trim carpenters already do that without the use of this tool. I already walk around with a standard tape, laser tape, and angle finder for every mitered corner and measure the whole house before I start cutting. This wouldn't save any time at all really.
It would be good info to tell us how short a cut it can measure for each saw. i.e. - how close can it be mounted to the blade for each of the miter saws you have. If I could measure a 1" piece on my DeWalt, that would be good to know. Don't know that I'd ever _need_ something that short, but it would be handy info to have out there.
Does it have an external power option? As something that would, in many cases, just sit with the saw at all times it seems really stupid to need AA batteries at all. That's a good option for those that need it portable, but I would like to see a DC in jack on there that would allow you to just skip the batteries. That being said, it would probably not be hard to 3D a dummy "battery" pack that replaces the door and batteries, and you just need to wire it up to a 3v power supply.
I think they have a tape measure that connects to it. If you’re doing something like baseboards you can record all your measurements, digitally, right on the tape measure. Then you can make the cuts all at once.
Great Video Matt - I did a similar video a few weeks ago and you covered a lot of things I wish I would have addressed, such as the wheel collecting dust, knots in the wood and the ability to do miters using the miter feature. Great work! :)
@731Woodworks. I like todays video, found it to be very informative. thats said I have a random follow up question, as I couldn't stop looking at your holder for your chisels, I don't remember you having that when you installed those organizer panels and wanted to ask where you got it. I would be great for my shop as I don't yet have a solution, and desperately need one. Hope you see this and thanks!
When this was on Kick Starter, it was supposed to be equipped with a BT connectivity and an ap, so that I could be on the roof and I could send the cuts to the cut man on the ground. Is it equipped as described?
Interesting product and idea. The price is the barrier to entry for me. A well placed stop block or better yet flip stop, imo, would be as fast or faster. Thanks for sharing. Keep buying these gadgets and sharing.
I just got one, myself. I haven't used it yet, but my thought on the long pieces is this thing will help you with a setup board. Then use the setup board to bring a stop block in and lock it down.
Another great review. The other drawback vs stop block is you have to roll the board under the wheel every time. So, if you need 10 boards 93" long, as when framing a wall. you have to roll each one under the wheel. No thanks. I agree about it being great for short boards.
Question!!???.....If you take it off and on your miter saw, would it be wise to maybe "mark" the position so you wouldn't have to calibrate it every time....or would you have to calibrate it every time you did remove it???
I think unless you could get it back at the exact same spot, you'd have to re calibrate each time. Good thing is it only takes about 30-45 seconds or so to calibrate it.
@@731Woodworks then that wouldn't be so bad at all. I could see this being extremely handy on the job site!! I install a lot of hard wood flooring, wood siding, wood trim, and decorative wooden crown molding.
What this tool will help with is the section of saw where I don't have any measuring tape. Between 12" and 20" I couldn't install any tape. I built my own station and should have removed the metal tubular extensions on the saw on both sides before bulding the center table.
Was curious when you measure with a tape, you push it flush so the end of the tape goes in but you don’t have that extra length from the tape. And didn’t you suggest we buy it on prime day?
Sounds interesting to me. However I think once the novelty of using it and having to set it up it would end up in my "Tools I didn't really need drawer.
I'd have to put mine on the right and do the calibration in reverse direction. I then wouldn't be able to use the bevel function of my saw as I would have to slide out the fence on the saw which would throw off the calibration.
My take: do stop blocks, but use this guy for setting it (better yet, ask for it for your birthday). Skip the by-eye measuring tape and let this tell you how long your cut is, then use the first cut to set your block for the rest
As an amazon seller I can tell you that Amazon puts some pretty ridiculous restrictions on products being sold that include batteries, it's a huge hassle, i'm not at all surprised it didn't come with them
I got this when it was on kickstarter and made many test cuts with it. One thing they bragged about and I most wanted was for it to make dead-accurate repeat cuts, but after many test cuts I found that it’s close, but not dead accurate. I found that I could generally get about as close as they do just by my own marking. As the video kind of shows but doesn’t flat out say, it’s pretty finicky. It can easy get out of calibration. It’s really hard to get you board pushed through to the exact length just right, and you have to have really flat clean boards. Overall it’s really not worth it. IMHO just use your money for a stop system that will ultimately be e faster, easier and more reliable
I have two of them the one from the kickstarter is exactly as you. The one I got as a gift works so much better they have made improvements to the tool
@@mfx1 nothing that accurate. It was more like 1/16” or sometimes greater. I could definitely tell by look and touch whereas with a simple stop block I can get accurate matching cuts.
@@justjay3750 Dunno... I have some Woodpeckers knockoffs from Ali Express that are alright, but I don't know if that's generalizable to Temu or of Chinese tools generally.
From your cons I'm thinking that this will not work for me because I use a lot of reclaimed wood. Most of my wood has defects in it so I think I will stick with the measuring tape and stop blocks for now.
I am thinking about buying one but according to the compatibility of my miter saw, the BoschGCM12SD I would need to buy an adapter but the pictures clearly show the BoschGCM12SD with no adapter as far as I can see so I’m a tad confused and I did not see a way to contact the company the email they give I can’t get it to send any help would be helpful thank s
@JohnC1 Here is my experience - No it doesn't lose calibration. It is calibrated to your tape measure and not the position on your saw. Your zero point is the blade and that doesn't change and it measures by rolling the wheel whose diameter doesn't change. So I made several cuts with the M1 at one position on the fence and then slid it away from the blade as far as I could and made several more cuts. All were within the given measurement error of just leaving M1 in one position (+/- 1/32in). Hope that helps.

This really is a genius idea. They just need to make a few minor adjustments other than that it's pretty cool. God bless
I've been curious about this...good review
Limited space for a stop-block system is the only reason I could see for buying it. I like the idea, and I wouldn't be surprised if, in the future, something like that might end up in a high-end miter saw.
I could consider adding this to my shop... if you don't give it away AND you're still using it a good amount of time six months from now. Any chance you can give us an update video some time down the road like you have with the Festool dust extractor (if memory serves)?
Looks awesome, I should have bought it on prime day, guess I’ll wait till it goes on sale again.
I own one and I like it , almost a year and still accurate, you can use it in reverse as well and I use it on my mft3 for the panels of my kitchens , overall it's a nice accessory, is it necessity? I will say no but it's nice to have , I am waiting for their measuring tape , overall I like the product
I hadn't thought of using it on other fences! That might be something I need to explore...
@johnstanley3253 just clamp a a wide taller angle to the mft3 table and clamp the m1 on to it and it works
I think I remember seeing a BT connected tape that works with this? So if you measure something, the cutman gets the dimentions automatically. I'm pretty sure it was this unit.
Does it have to be recalibrated if the board is thocker? Id think so as the wheel would move to a different point.
Thanks much for the review.
VERY INFORMATIVE
Glad it was helpful!
Do you have link to your saw table building with the stop block measure please thanks
I saw the ads but didn't think it would be that good!
Mr Matt, dose this work with the bevel cuts , I want to make some honey comb shelves for the Mrs.
Great Video Matt - I did a similar video a few weeks ago and you covered a lot of things I wish I would have addressed, such as the wheel collecting dust, knots in the wood and the ability to do miters using the miter feature. Great work! :)
flynngoat in the 731 comments. what a legend.
@@moldyzucchinis3251 😂 Old Moldy! Still my favorite username!
It's just a magnetic pad that OmniWall sells on their website. omniwallusa.com/magnet-pad/
@@731Woodworks oh hell yeah!!! Thanks buddy, I’ll scoop one
When this was on Kick Starter, it was supposed to be equipped with a BT connectivity and an ap, so that I could be on the roof and I could send the cuts to the cut man on the ground. Is it equipped as described?
Yes the app works
Interesting item, not really something I would need, but I can see that it does have a place and would be useful.
Interesting product and idea. The price is the barrier to entry for me. A well placed stop block or better yet flip stop, imo, would be as fast or faster. Thanks for sharing. Keep buying these gadgets and sharing.
Review their tape measure, Please! The M1 Tomahawk looks cool! I don't know if I should get it.
I just got one, myself. I haven't used it yet, but my thought on the long pieces is this thing will help you with a setup board. Then use the setup board to bring a stop block in and lock it down.
So....a 150 dollar fragile, electronic tape measure? Lol
That's the funniest thing I have heard. Tape measures, by design, are fragile.
@@Itsdirtnaptime You must be fun at parties if that's the funniest thing you've ever heard.
Another great review. The other drawback vs stop block is you have to roll the board under the wheel every time. So, if you need 10 boards 93" long, as when framing a wall. you have to roll each one under the wheel. No thanks. I agree about it being great for short boards.
I bought one on their Kickstarter program for $99. I couldn't setup the calibration. Maybe I'll try again. Thanks for the video.
Could you show a close up on how this attatches to saw
Thanks again. The cons were really heavy, cleanliness plus straight perfect boards 😫.
Does the calibration cut have to be 6’? Like many people, my miter saw station only has 5’ to the right of the saw.
How does it perform on PVC or dowels?
How well does this work with your Ryobi Miter saw?
Sounds interesting to me. However I think once the novelty of using it and having to set it up it would end up in my "Tools I didn't really need drawer.
I'd have to put mine on the right and do the calibration in reverse direction. I then wouldn't be able to use the bevel function of my saw as I would have to slide out the fence on the saw which would throw off the calibration.
Fair review, and a nice tool, but I can tell from the review that I don't really have a need for it. Thanks for saving me $150!
I generally use this to speed up rough cuts, and then refine if needed from there.
Got it for $119 during Prime Days deals. And I"m thinking you can move your saw fence out to give you some clearance for those miter cuts.
For random pieces of different length ti could see using it. But for repetitive pieces at the same length a stop block would be faster.
How about a video on different moisture meters. All the videos I find are firewood related or just using 1 brand.
My take: do stop blocks, but use this guy for setting it (better yet, ask for it for your birthday). Skip the by-eye measuring tape and let this tell you how long your cut is, then use the first cut to set your block for the rest
0.01in or 0.254mm isn't negligible. You can feel that difference. Can you try how accurate it can be in mm.
If you're trying to get 0.01" accuracy that's always going to be finicky however you measure it.
@@mfx1 nothing that accurate. It was more like 1/16” or sometimes greater. I could definitely tell by look and touch whereas with a simple stop block I can get accurate matching cuts.
would love to see a video on your thoughts on their tape measure The T1. Thanks for the content keep up the good work :-)
Matt: it comes with an in-depth instruction sheet tuclked in the front of the styro case when you open it...
do you have to zero for different thicknesses. Can I cut 8/4 then 4/4 stock without zeroing? Another great video 🎉
You should try the new T1 Tomohawk that will be available to pair with the M1. Could be a good video.
If you get the measuring tape it connects to it and it will have all your measurements programmed to it.
Great breakdown and demo, as usual. Looks like a cool toy and I will definitely plan to buy the knockoff when it shows up on Temu for $42.
is temu stuff actually legit? I bought something from wish once and although it did show up the quality was horrendous.
@@justjay3750 Dunno... I have some Woodpeckers knockoffs from Ali Express that are alright, but I don't know if that's generalizable to Temu or of Chinese tools generally.
Butiful video sir
Interesting tool.
0:19 "And when I first SAW this."
Pun intended.
Saw a camera that matches the frame rates of screens thought that awesome
Is there upgraded rechargeable usb c charger type please
I would love to see you actually build things. dont get me wrong I like product reviews but how about some wood working
Hmm, can it be mounted on the right side of the blade and used the same way, in reverse?
Does it have to be recalibrated each time it is remounted? I would think not, but wanted to ask.
I'm sure it does need to be calibrated, unless you have some way to mount it at the exact same position on the fence each time.
Gotta admit, it looks pretty sexy. Your "Scroll a little further" had me laughing in recognition and sympathy.
I'm having trouble locking mine down? It won't engage/lock down on the fence.
I purchased one of these but it never worked for me. It kept moving around when cutting. Better to make your own jig. Much cheaper too!
