    Good timing Steve. I started painting about 15 months ago. Recently I began digging out some of the earliest paintings and have been reworking them, trying to turn the impenetrable shiny white geometric shapes on them into natural looking clouds. I hope one day we will see a tutorial for painting a distant rain storm. In the meantime: Onward through the fog, I mean clouds!

    Clouds are the jewels of the sky. I love them! My problem is trying to make them look far away instead up close and in your face. I'm always having to work on that.

    Great tips...
    Very nice clouds...natural free flowing...reminds me of the Dutch painters...today's painters are too scribble scrabble when it comes to clouds...then their's those who layer upon layer with no definition and or hard egdes... like writing mountains, they give lessons without looking at references...making up shapes with no rhyme or reason giving a cartoonish look....and the mountains don't exist nor look like they would..

    OK....here is something I could use. When you say you're adding green to the clouds, please point to the are where the green is added. The same thing goes for the burnt sienna. Where is the burnt sienna in your clouds? That will help me know how you mix the proper values in your painting.

    Hi Steve, what do you recommend most for an underdrawing? Is graphite doable? If I used colored pencil, do I have to seal it? I tend to work in multiple layers of paint so is it fine using graphite or colored pencil without sealing it? Thanks!

    • @SteveAtkinsonFineArt
      @SteveAtkinsonFineArt  Год назад

      Hi Ethan, I know a few high profile artists who use Prismacolor pencils to do their underdrawing with. I imagine any wax base color pencil will work for this. The way I see it, there are 2 drawbacks to doing this. The first is that for the most part, once you draw on your canvas with them, they are very hard to erase and make corrections. The second drawback is that as you put down your paint, the drawing can dissolve and no longer will be visible if you want to get back to see your original drawing. This isn't as big of a deal if you're painting landscapes, but if you're doing portraits it can be a challenge. If you want to see how I transfer a drawing and then seal it so that I can paint over it, but it always remains if I want to get back to it, do a search in my videos. Have fun!

    • @ethanmietzner5218
      @ethanmietzner5218 Год назад

      @Steve Atkinson Fine Art hey Steve! What about graphite? I hear artists say it can move its way up to the surface. However, if I did a light graphite drawing, would that be fine? I'm worried about sealing it with a fixative because I don't know if it's smart to introduce chemicals underneath my oil paint layers.

    • @SteveAtkinsonFineArt
      @SteveAtkinsonFineArt  Год назад

      @@ethanmietzner5218 I've heard the same thing about using graphite as an underdrawing. However, charcoal pencils work fine because they dissolve as you apply the paint. Just keep your drawing light and you'll be fine.

      on this one, since the painting was done in one sitting and still wet, I used the handle of my brush and scratched it in. If I paint it, I'll use a small synthetic liner.

    Could you tell me which colors you use for the cloud base?

    • @SteveAtkinsonFineArt
      @SteveAtkinsonFineArt  3 года назад +1

      Hi Ray, for the base color of the clouds I use Rembrandt Cold Grey. And from there I lighten it and bend the color to whatever the gray in the clouds tend to, blue, green, brown... like that.

    • @raymatthews4319
      @raymatthews4319 3 года назад

      @@SteveAtkinsonFineArt Ok, thanks. Do you mean the Rembrandt brand of oils? I have used them before.

    • @SteveAtkinsonFineArt
      @SteveAtkinsonFineArt  3 года назад

      @@raymatthews4319 Yes, the Rembrandt brand of oils. You could also use Gamblin's Portland Grey Deep color, they're pretty similar, or near enough as to make no difference.
