San Diego bay area does not get many nights that even get close to chill hours, her location is near downtown, you can see the big buildings. So Cal has many areas, bay area, hight desert, inland, etc. Of all this the bay area does not get basically any chill hours. May be one or two hours a night in a cold night, a regular apple tree needs 500 hours to 1000, but low chill hours are the ones 100 to 300 hours. Until I got Anna and Dorsette golden I did not see good annual growth. Just choose a very low chill for bay area, inland are can take regular apple trees. Greetings, happy gardening.
We have a 50ish year old green fig tree in Vista. It is over a deep septic field and we never water it. Since I started pruning it in 2018, the production from new growth has been insane. We can't harvest them all, so the birds, bees, and fig beetles have a feast.
I live in Rolando, San Diego I am having a hard time locating the expensive nectar plum seed or cutting you recommended and I was wondering if you had a cutting I could try?! 🙏😻
Hi Malissa. We also live in Rolando and have a nectaplum tree. We got it bare root from Andersen Nursery a couple years ago in January. We should have fruit in July if you want to come try it!
2 questions: 1. Does growing dwarf varieties matter in a dry environment matter? A mango you pointed out recently looked like a dwarf. 2. You mentioned a favorite plum and lemon, are there farms or food festivals that have taste & purchase options? Often we plant what is the local big box sells and that can be disappointing after years of nurturing.
Yes, all of the varieties we have planted are from a local, independently owned nursery which has great varieties chosen for our area. We don’t buy our trees from a big box store.
Thanks for this! It gets me excited to plant more trees. My favorite local tree nursery is Maddock Nursery in Fallbrook. They specialize in avocado but will also let you know the chill requirements of each of their apple trees, for example. There's also a great nursery in Vista called Clausen Nursery. And we've gotten some good trees (not fruit though--just jacaranda, etc.) at Briggs.
Lots of valuable information. I was taking notes. We have a lot of work to do in regards to picking which fruit trees get planted. My preliminary sketch has it at about 100 acres of fruit trees across the ranch. Will ask for your help.
Southern California is nothing but chill, maybe just not the right kind for fruit trees... ;)
Love this! I had to read it twice ❤️
Fruit cakes perhaps ?

Appreciate your suggestions for considering a monthly harvest and not be overwhelmed! Thank you Brijette

How concerned should I be in 10b with a Chicago hardy fig that has rust?
Hello good luck you are great farmer
I want a fog tree but do not have a lot of space. Will they do well in a 25 inch barrel planter?
They can but you have to watch it carefully that they don’t dry out.
I live in San Diego by Mission Bay Park and have to do container gardening. Are there any fruit varieties that will do well under these conditions?
Trees can be grown in containers. Make sure you plant dwarf trees in the largest containers you can manage. They need room for good root development.
Are there any fruit trees that I can grow on a hillside?
Yes! Avocados love hills.
@@SanDiegoSeedCompany are there any other trees?
Are you sure apples are stone fruit?
Pome fruit
I like the idea of having too many figs and being able to feed the birds and the people.
