      @@EdgeofNowhereFarm thank you. Although I might have the same bird problem as you do. I have a fig tree that bears lots of fruits every year. Birds snack on them, too. Luckily, it produces more fruits than what the birds can eat.😄 🐦

      @@EdgeofNowhereFarm I have read that birds often damage fruit more for moisture than for food. I wonder if it has to do with your desert environment and what water sources are around or not around.

    Looking forward to seeing if those different strategies lead to success on the new farm.
    I think the "more trees" strategy will allow the birds to get their share and leave more for you.

      Hey Allan. Yeah, we're hoping for the same. We have the space, so the question just becomes whether or not we just add multiple varieties and shot gun blast it or several of the same. Birds damage tomatoes the same way they do your apples. They are looking for water. Rightly so, you both are in AZ. I've seen the fix for that is providing dishes of shaded water for them to drink and they will leave the fruit alone.

    • @EdgeofNowhereFarm
      @EdgeofNowhereFarm  4 года назад

      I think you're onto something there. We're trying to figure out how to incorporate more water features on the new farm to see if that can help us out. Hopefully you're right and we can get some of these fall varieties to fully ripe!

    • @EdgeofNowhereFarm
      @EdgeofNowhereFarm  4 года назад

      Hey Derick. Yes, we did have a Honeycrisp on the old property, but it never produced any fruit. Actually, it didn't even flower which is the only apple tree we've had that wouldn't at least give us flowers. It was very young when we sold the property and we met the new owners a few months back and the tree was still growing. So maybe there's a chance!

    How are the Fuji apples in 9b? I have Dorsettgolden, and Anna and they are doing well but I have heard the Fuji are late season and that makes me nervous to try them in Mesa AZ.

    • @EdgeofNowhereFarm
      @EdgeofNowhereFarm  3 года назад +1

      Hey Jesse. These fall apples are VERY difficult to get to harvest through our summers. Dorsette and Anna are spring ripening, so they are harvested before the peak of summer when plants start to stunt and die back. This causes the tree to go into survival mode and basically let the fruit die on the tree. We're going to try a few on the new farm (they'll be planted over the next few weeks), but we don't plan on getting much if any harvest from them.

      My local HD had a few nice looking ones that are very inexpensive so I thought I would give them a try. Always fun to bring new spices back to the property.

    I am hearing A LOT about Sundowner apples that are an import from Australia. I don’t think they are late season but hear they do great in deserts. Any info on this?

      Hey there Lepou. These varieties do not work very well for us here, so I don't know whether or not they would be successful for you. They will set fruit, but they are not able to get all the way to Fall in order to ripen as our summers are just too hot and dry.

    What other fruits suffer from sun burn? Pears? Stone fruits?

    • @EdgeofNowhereFarm
      @EdgeofNowhereFarm  2 года назад +1

      Fall ripening apples seem to be the biggest challenge, because they are one of a few that have to survive through our summers. Pomegranates push right through with no issues and figs are ok as long as they have consistent irrigation. The majority of fruits ripening quickly enough that they don't have to deal with the intense heat of summer.

    • @ahmadel-awa4165
      @ahmadel-awa4165 2 года назад

      @@EdgeofNowhereFarm How about persimmons? They ripen in the fall too, and I remember purchasing Hachiya persimmons that had black patches on their skin, probably sun burn too. If it’s cosmetician , I would not care, but if it affects fruit quality as with your apples, then it’s a consideration in variety selection.

    • @EdgeofNowhereFarm
      @EdgeofNowhereFarm  2 года назад +1

      @@ahmadel-awa4165 great question. Persimmons grow well for us and we had a tree on the old property that produced fruit, but they never survived the onslaught of the summer birds we see here in AZ. We didn't do a good job of protecting them from the birds, so the 2 persimmon varieties we have on this farm will continue that test. Hopefully we can get those to make it into Fall as well.
