  • For a change of pace, here’s the very first rhythm n’ blues “duet” on the channel. Johnnie Richardson and Joe Rivers teamed up in 1956 in the Bronx, New York. This is their third release, which appeared on Chess Records in 1957. It rose to #8 on the pop charts and #3 on the R n’ B charts. It’s performed here at the great Burlington County concert.

Does anyone know if this is the original Johnnie & Joe? I know the woman was replaced once or twice over the years even though they kept the same name.

They are both originals. Johnnie Louise Richardson was the daughter of the owner of J&S Records "Zell" Sanders. Johnnie died of a stroke in 1988 and was replaced but they kept the name. They were under contract to J&S but their hits were usually released on Chess Records. Johnnie also sang with The Jaynetts' touring group.
