On a full moon Sat night. White Sands is open late. It is just beautiful with noon shining on the white sand. If you get the chance take it in. You will not be sorry.
When I was a kid in the late 50’s my dad worked at that AFB. I do remember one time when there was a crashed missile off the side of the road and soldiers were directing traffic to move on and not stop.
Russ, I just heard about Rain having surgery and some strokes! She has been so helpful and gone out of her way to help me with my questions. There is nothing I can do to help her from here in Florida but if you stop in at the Chamber please tell her I said a prayer for her! Thanks for all you do, Charles Tait
Your video popped up in my recommendations. :-D We live in Tularosa! I saw a specialist doctor in Alamogordo in 2010. That day I decided I wanted to retire down here because of all of the beauty.
On my trip through NM in 2018 I planned to camp inside White Sands. Turned up late afternoon and all campsites booked! The irony was, from my cheap motel room in Alamogordo, seeing the most violent lightning storm hit the White Sands area that same night.
We're so happy you enjoyed our area and the sites, but you did not go anywhere near the prettiest regions of White Sands... If you would have gone another mile into the Dunes loop, you would have been blown away! Untouched dunes (redone every night with breezes) and even more stunning views. It's simply a unique experience in our country!
So true, Sandy. Wife and I lived in Alamo for 10 years, and I volunteered at the park 10 years ago. So much fun to work with great rangers and to tell visitors about the amazing sequence of natural processes needed to make the sand. The park quickly became my favorite, even though I've been to Rocky Mountain, Glacier, Yellowstone, and several others. As for Russ, well, he makes great videos, but sometimes doesn't immerse himself enough in places. He'll say stuff like, "This is definitely on my bucket list. Have to come back and check it out", when he needs to stop NOW and check it out. Waiting for his bucket list time may make it even harder to walk on those dunes! That being said, I do enjoy Russ' commentary and camera work. He gets a kick out of life, and is living his dream. More power to him.
In the 1950s, the White Sands National Park let you drive deep inside the sands where it was pure white high dunes and absolutely no vegetation. They had parking areas and washroom buildings like the one you photographed. They also had the shaded picnic tables.
I went there in the 60's and did that, us kids played king of the hill on the steep backsides where we could jump 40ft or more off the crests, it was all huge white dunes back there! We were from MN and my Grandparents lived in Alamogordo, it was Christmas time and we went up to Cloudcroft to play in the snow as well. Great memories!
My father was stationed at White Sands Missile site back in 57, and I have photos of me running down the white sand. 5 years old at the time, but we had to return to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri at the end of August.
Next time you drive through Alamogordo, make sure you visit the Hi-D-Ho burger restaurant at 414 S White Sands Blvd. They feature old-time burgers (including awesome green-chile cheeseburgers), perfect french fries, genuine milkshakes, and other delicious food! No, I don't work there; I just love their food!
I was there in 1993 and did a tour of the Space Museum and the White Sands National Monument. It was a self-drive tour of the South West. While I was at the White Sands NM, the first thing I noticed was that the sand is not pure white. It's a kind of 'creamy' colour. However, in full sunlight, it does look white. And this shows up in Ross's video. It's actually almost 100 % Gypsum (Calcium Sulphate) I went all the way to the end loop of the road and did a walk-a-bout to an area where I was completely surrounded by pure sand. No vegetation. I had a small plastic container with me and even though you're not supposed to, I just couldn't resist the temptation. I filled up the container with the sand. I even found several small, very rough pale brownish Gypsum crystals and they are also with the sample as well. I still have the sample and it's a treasured souvenir of the trip. And you can see the 'creamy' colour of the sand.
Boy the world of Whites sands, and the land of gypsum, is pretty remarkable. Our countries and our nature is pretty miraculous. It looks like the land of snow, and yet is gypsum, so white and so beautiful. We have a land like that here in Canada, and we also have a land that looks that but is potash, which is used for fertilizer, so it is pretty remarkable what our Mother Earth produces....Thank you Russ, and a big wave to you from Colin and I as we travel with you on your route for holidays. We know that area is filled with tornado weather, so our prayers for your safety go with you from us. Please take care as we love the travel and to do it with you but it is not worth your life, if you run into a tornado...So stay safe Russ, for we all have to get together for a hug yet, but thank you for the travel, for we so appreciate you keeping us sane right now with travel while my husband heals....Bless you all in friendship, and Love from Canada, your friends forever. Stay safe everyone. Carolyn
I was at White Sands in Oct. 2019 and it's still on my bucket list. I don't know what it is but I just loved the Park. The Space Museum was very well put together, it would have been worth the stop if it was open.
We went to White Sands the first week of Feb. the gift shop was closed for entry, you had to point at things thru the glass to make any purchases. NM was still griped in fear of the Virus, most eateries were all pickup only and a lot of things where closed and the same in Roswell our next stop😁👽 Russ you showed a photo of the picnic table but didn’t include on the video the drive through the actual picnic area and the toilets. Those were super clean and a ranger was passing thru the area Checking to make sure they all had TP. The Rangers did a fantastic job in the park area. That long walkway is basically a wheelchair assess-ability ramp for people with disabilities. You can also rent coasters there by the gift shop. We saw kids and adults using them. By the way all the picnic spots had grills for charcoal use only and a nearby trash barrel. Our dogs on long leashes had a great time there too. I love how the sand doesn’t stick to you😁👍 Anyone going, go early and plan on staying awhile. The day we went the weather was perfect, not too cold at all. It was a fun visit!
Hi Russ! I’m fascinated by watching a video of yours and discover I’ve been there during my trucking days! In fact I’ve traveled the same exact route YOU did in this video many times! Watching videos like this one will keep me patient until I can go full time soon! Thanks for the memories! Safe travels! ~Jim~
Wonder if there are scorpions and snakes in the dunes. Great place to visit. I like the comment Gift shop and all that, don’t need that. lol 😆. That’s too cool for school lol 😆 💕
No one was sledfing! They rent snow saucers to sled the dunes. It was a blast! Such fun seeing it again. Thank you. Looking forward to Roswell. Watch out for Aliens!
🙋♀️ Hello Russ! You didn't come back with sand in your shoe. It looked softer than it was. A beautiful day it turned out to be. I liked seeing the White Sands National Park. I could see how easily a person could get lost out there. Have a nice day. Looking forward to Roswell. 👍
Cool! The closest I have seen to that was at the dunes off of Lake Michigan. They were amazing when I saw them about 20 years ago. Thank you for sharing
Really nice video which brought back some good memories. It was really too bad you weren’t able to visit the space museum. It is definitely worth it. Nice drone shot of the building.
Woohoo! Alamogordo! Yeah! I'm just up northeast on the Mescalero Apache Reservation. Cool thing is the sands stretch farther north. Awesome place to check out is the Valley of Fires by Carrizozo, NM. Bunch of people have found tons of Native American artifacts there and at Three Rivers Between Tularosa and Carrizozo, NM. Man, There's just tons of places within reach for sight-seeing, camping, and everything! Haha
Lived in Alamogordo for several yrs.loved that area so much..lots of day trips all around that area..I m sure most is open now that covid has simmered down some. Enjoy
Wish we had some blue sky here in Alabama lol. Dealing with some severe storms and unfortunately tornadoes. Reminds me of when I went through Kingman in July and saw a twister forming. Glad I got your awesome videos to watch. Keep it up
The Tularosa Basin Museum of History was a cool little museum in down town Alamogordo. Told tales of the Eddy Brothers bring the railroad to Alamogordo and the roots of Cloudcroft as a rail head for bring the Railroad ties cut from the lumber up in the mountains. The museum in Cloudcroft should be on your list also....
I was stationed there in the 80's. Alamogordo has grown a bit and the Base has completely changed. You should have continued on to the loop... The dunes are huge there. (lots of those sheltered tables). Take a big piece of cardboard and "sled down the dunes"! The best time to be there is in Feb/Mar because the sand fleas haven't surfaced yet. In Jul/Aug they attack more than mosquitoes in Florida!
In 1996 I was a truck driver traveling through Socal about 4 am when a rocket from white sands was launched and blown up in the atmosphere because it went of trajectory. What a sight! Russ will you be coming through wa again this Summer? Not sure if you have done Sequim yet?

RUclips’s algorithm is at it again. Alamogordian here, thanks for coming though and making the town look good 👍🏼
Please never change your intro music! Brings back great memories.
Yeah! Let's have a RVer TV/Russ papalooza potluck & have your blue grassy band play...that's What I'd call FUN !!!!
On a full moon Sat night. White Sands is open late. It is just beautiful with noon shining on the white sand. If you get the chance take it in. You will not be sorry.
Thank you for sharing...this is the only way I'll ever see this.... Appreciate you...
Same here! Thank you, Russ. 😊
I love your first-person point-of-view style videos makes me feel like I'm their in person.
What intrigues me is the is how the plants grow in stages in order to remain on the surface. Really enjoyed the park.
When I was a kid in the late 50’s my dad worked at that AFB. I do remember one time when there was a crashed missile off the side of the road and soldiers were directing traffic to move on and not stop.
No wind ! Always a good thing in the desert 🏜!
Afternoon Russ! Thanks for another great video sir!

Thanks for taking us along Russ!!
It's always a pleasure to watch your videos. ❤
i look forward to them
That was beautiful and with the blue skies amazing, thanks for sharing!❤️🦋

Yes, the view of the San Andres Mountains at sunrise is really hard to beat!
The White Sands area was amazingly beautiful. I thought that the sand would be very soft. Thanks for taking me along. Stay safe and happy adventuring.
In March 2020, at the beginning of the pandemic, I was so lucky to be able to visit the most beautiful place in New Mexico, White Sands
1:52 - "Gift shop and all that, don't need it"
And now Russ is my spirit animal!
Watching this on 7/11/2023. Cool looking area. It really does look like snow
Like your videos. Thank you for droning.
Enjoy your love of nature and flowers!
You have become our Travel Guide! Blessings Gregg and Janice

Great tour of White Sands
Wow white sands is gorgeous.
When I was eleven and my uncle was stationed at Ft. Bliss, he took us to White Sands. I remember the black bugs in the sand! Thanks for the memory.
When was your dad at Ft Bliss? I spent 2 years there. I loved exploring N Mexico & Arizona. I ‘surfed’ on White Sands dunes. That was fun.
You sure make a good spokesman for every place you visit. Very well meaningful!
We're so happy you enjoyed our area and the sites, but you did not go anywhere near the prettiest regions of White Sands... Hey Russ great video thanks for taking us along on the ride we were riding shotgun with RVTV the grandkids say hello travel well lance and family
About 30 yrs ago I took my kids over here for “Space Camp” for a week they loved it. They talk a lot about the space museum so make sure you see it
Fantastic that they have the boardwalk to make things accessible for everyone. Walking in sand can be no joke! 😅
Another great site and the Bucket list grows.

@@Dancinbear1995 Cloudcroft was a tiny place in the 1950s and a real jewel. Aspen trees and green meadows and out of the desert heat.
They still have all that I promise
@John Douma No, it wasn’t.
My father was stationed at White Sands Missile site back in 57, and I have photos of me running down the white sand. 5 years old at the time, but we had to return to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri at the end of August.
I was there in 1970 while I was stationed at Ft Bliss, El Paso. Looks like it built up quite a bit. Spent some time up the mountain in Ruidoso 👍
I have relatives in a place called Tinnie NM. It's between Ruidoso and Roswell. You had to have gone right by their place on your way to Roswell.
Wish your videos were longer! They are so interesting and end too soon!😊
I was at White Sands in Oct. 2019 and it's still on my bucket list.

OMG Thank you a zillion times for this
Thanks for another video today, take care.
Live 20 miles from it! Love that place.
👍👍 Thanks. I need to get off the Interstate and travel more on the surface streets to see more beautiful places like Russ do.
Love the Whitesand Monument. Walked up to Space Museum a couple of times. Alamogordo is like my second home. Good video. Thank you.
Thanks for Sharing Russ! Have been there 2019! Stay Safe travels!
Looks like our snow banks in northeastern Ohio. On my bucket like. Thanks.
Another beautiful place and video. Thanks Russ 🚐
I was there 4-5 years ago, didn't phase me to ask a local how to pronounce the name of their town!!
Hi Dan Pogue from Lebanon Missouri 😀
Well, thanks for making the effort. Now, let's find another place that sells pies. Make this one a Coconut Cream Pie with white meringue a mile high.
Im in Roswell Russ. Imma be on lookout for ya! Stay safe
Your channel is my new favorite channel! Love love love your videos!
The white sand was beautiful. I stayed at that Air Force two weeks ago.
Thank you for the ride.

I was there 28 years ago. Would go back again if I could.
I found the Chihuahuan Desert signs interesting since I have a Chihuahua lol.
Thanks for sharing your great video 😊👍
Looks Like snow and that couple dressed in winter jackets made it look even less like sand and more like snow!
It’s on my bucket list! Yay!
Thanks. For. THe. Ride. A. Long. Russ. Be. Safe. Till. Next. Time. From. Oregon

Russ seems to have not gone all the way either. It's only there that you see the pure sand dunes with no vegetation.
Thanks Russ, I've wanting to check out White Sands. It DOES look like another planet.
That's was great filming locations of white stands .
In new Mexico's.
From white snow to white sands!

I literally live in Alamogordo and have never even gone to the visitor's center or looked at the signs so this was very informative 👍😄

Thanks again for the ride along. Beautiful place. Really does look like snow. Seems funny seeing so much sand without being at tg he ocean. 😊👍
Enjoyed visiting someplace new! Nice video!
Interesting. Never been there. Thanks Russ. ❤️
Very interesting place
