With a record number of fires blazing across the rainforest - environmentalists are blaming the President himself for encouraging loggers and farmers to clear more land. And the reason they are worried - the Amazonian rainforest is a vital source of carbon which helps slow down global warming.

When there is a will there is a way - I agree. However, a military intervention will only make matters worse. Or as the history has shown us, much much worse. One has to imagine that once invaded, the Brazilian people will have no reason to protect the rain forest and plenty of reason to destroy it through guerilla wars. If we look back at the Vietnam-US conflict, guerilla wars are especially effective in tropical areas.
Instead of blaming Brazil, we must remind that the forest are being cleared out for farming, especially cattle ranches. The premium commodity beef produced in Brazil is exported to wealthy countries, mainly in Europe. So, a very good step forward would be to simply reduce the consumption of imported beef, which will have a significant impact on Brazil's economy given the 60% of their GDP is made up of exports.
Fortunately, long gone are the days when military force was the answer. Today we have diplomacy and soft-power levers such as economical pressure.
Want to teach Brazil a lesson? Stop buying Brazilian products for a while, especially beef.

This is no accident with over 9000 smaller fires all connecting into one large forest fire, some one wants to clear the land for commercialization of the land. There goes 20% of the world oxygen for our lives.

An observation: São Paulo is THOUSANDS of miles away from the Amazon forest for the smoke reach it! The number of fire spots are at normal levels, many people who lives in those areas have been broadcasting videos through social media explainiing that there is no catastrophe going on, celebrities and politicians are spreading old photos and photos from another places. Our Government is doing even better than we expected.

we as humans have become so Insensitive that we can't even think beyond our borders. Our Forests are burning and we are paying no heed to them. It's a matter of concern for all the democratic nations and citizens, what have our elected representatives done to bring this incident into knowledge of world and steps taken by them to stop it ? Earth is dying and it took 3 weeks to notice it and wake up the world. As an Indian I request my government do use all resources whatever we have to stop this fire and stand by Brazil government for any possible assistance.
The destruction that is caused by fires in weeks will take centuries to be restored in an environment so diverse and complex as the one in the Amazonas, and I the saddest part is that most people won't even be able to understand that, the ignorance and greed will destroy us all.

It's amazing to me, all the people who talk about saving the planet, but won't take on the biggest polluter, factory farming. That is the main reason the Amazon is being destroyed, for cattle grazing. I'm NOT saying everyone should adopt a plant based diet, but cutting down on meat consumption would certainly help.

Stop cutting down the forest for palm oil. Protest and boycott food manufacturers that use palm oil in there products. Read your food labels and don’t buy if palm oil if listed. You will be shocked how many supermarket items include it. It’s something everyone can do. It’s a start.

Really upsetting to see the Amazonia in that way, however I find it remarkable that before this major fire broke out, during the EU/ Mercosul trade deal, Emmanuel Macron was already try to sneak the Amazon rainforest as part of the deal. Boycott has always happen against Brazil in order to break the prices down. Should Emmanuel Macron have sent the French army to help stop the fire ( genuinely intended to do so), it would have been a lot more positive rather than sit around a table to play politics. The Amazonia is not for sale!

I believe 60% of deforestation is due to clearing for agriculture, most of which is cattle. The greenhouse gases from cattle is worse than carbon emissions. Close to 2k gallons of water are needed to produce one lb of beef. I am vegan, but don’t expect others to become vegans. It’s a personal choice. I do feel it’s important to have all the information in order to make an informed decision. We also need to see that our choices do matter.
If the rainforest is so import to the entire world maybe it should belong to a stronger government than Brazil then these things could be better managed and protected
