I am going to miss this series with opeth. I had so much fun watching you and i learned alot theroy wise. Thank you for your effort. In my opinion, one of their most underrated album is still life. Just heard it in full length today
Thanks man 🤘
Martin Popoff’s book “The Top 500 Heavy Metal Songs of All Time” was determined by people voting for the top songs. Not a single Opeth song made the top 500. But it wasn’t because people didn’t vote for Opeth songs. It was because people voted for so many different Opeth songs that no single song got enough votes.
I love Mikael’s clean vocals so much. He has such a lovely baritone that reminds me of really good whiskey. Smooth but still has a nice kick to it
Agreed
They should make a whiskey called, peated opeth.
First time I heard this song my mind was blown away, I had chills during the chorus, brilliant song
Magical
1. Bleak
2. The baying of the hounds
3. Serenity painted death
4. Hessian peel
5. Blackwater park
Harlequin Forrest probably my favorite track on this album. I love the acoustic break in the middle of the track that leads to the guitar solo. That is probably one of my favorite opeth moments. thank you Mike for making me aware of this band, and I love your analysis of the opeth tracks keep rockin brother
It's an honor 🙏
I've totally enjoyed this series, so far. Especially the Opeth stuff. Cool to see you get hyped about it.
Oh I'm done with it for a while lol
This album opened up a new way to write music for me. As well as a new way to tell stories (while not sacrificing good writing lol) thank you for doing this series mike!
That's awesome man 🤘🤘
Thank you for introducing me to Opeth, Mike! Ever since I saw your video on Blackwater park and heard those STANKY riffs I've been hooked. You rock dude 🤘
Damn, the way you described this song was so damn poetic. And I feel like it’s definitely merited for this one. Especially with how it feels so openly sorrowful compared to a lot of their other songs.
*The first three albums are always put to the side, especially the Orchid and Morningrise cause of the production.*
*But the songs on Orchid and Morningrise are amazing, all the clean and heavy riffs are incrediblely beautiful and I love them*
This. I understand that the randomness of the songs structure is a barrier for some people, but In Mist, Forest, Twilight, Advent, Night, Black Rose and To Bid are all top tier Opeth to me. It's sad that so many people can't enjoy the absolute epicness of these songs. It's a good thing Opeth evolved from that era because they told everything there was to be told, but Orchid and Morningrise are amazing to me.
I discovered opeth recently through windowpane, and had a great time finding more and more of their chill songs. Awesome video and breakdown Mike, much love from israel❤
🤘🤘
Men will literally listen to this song on loop for 5 hours instead of going to therapy
Lol truth
Love this song. It’s massively underrated beautiful piece of music gives me intense chills every time.Ghost Reveries is possibly sonically their best (while my favourite album may be still life Ghost reveries takes the throne for that particular aspect)
It's more than a metal song
Just wanted to say I was pretty stoked to find out you also think of that melodic bridge in Bleak as one of the greatest moments in an Opeth song 'cause I've always thought that since I heard the song 12 years ago. Great minds think alike it seems :)
It hits so incredibly well
In my opinion, this song has one of mikael's most beautiful vocal deliveries
This band took me a bit to get used to. Hearing the awkward dissonance that my brain was telling me is awful took me out. Over time though, I got the feel of it and fell in love. The most challenging band for me period, but it was so worth it. So thank you for showing isolation years, exposing me to this band in that video.
Wow that says a lot. Happy you enjoy them dude 🤘
Interesting picks! Not at all what i expected! Opeth is my personal favourite band, and i love absolutely every album except orchid and morningrise. Mine would probably be:
- The Leper Affinity
- The Moor
- Moon Above, Sun Below
- River
- A Fleeting Glance
Honorable mentions: Famine, Hessian Peel, Next Of Kin, The Baying Of The Hounds and Dirge For November
Good picks
These vocals are so smooth and velvety, I wanna roll around in them.
You do just sink completely into this track
Mr. Brownstone is my favorite progressive black metal Opeth album
Hey Mike.
I think you should do a review/analysis on Johnny Depp's music.
The algorithm would like it as his name is real hot right now.
The moodiest, most tragic sounding Opeth song. Ghost Reveries is just so good, the sense of emotion in this album is steeped in a combo of serene wonder and melancholy grieving, yet somehow it fits perfectly. It's a very sincere sense of brooding that I can't compare to any other band I've listened to tbh.
Fully agree. This brooding hit different
Top 5:
1. April Ethereal
2. Karma
3. The Twilight is My Robe
4. Godhead's Lament
5. Advent
Hell yeah man. I always loved the ghostliness of Mikaels vocals here. I feel it's the closest he's ever gotten to true lament and sadness personally. The entire song never breaks character for me and I can't help but adore it
That's a good way to describe it
Kinda sad you haven't touched on prog-rock Opeth. I mean, I love pre-Heritage era, but I also value myself some Moon Above-Sun Below, Wilde Flowers or Heart In Hand - what are your feeling about their quirkier, less punchy side?
Opeth was may favorite band for about 20 years. Since about 2017 another band got my #1 rank. If you like experimental prog metal and you don't mind German lyrics, try The Hirsch Effekt. You won't like them at first listen, they have to grow, and they'll do, I promise. Like Opeth, no song is similar to another, so listen to more than one, or give a whole album a chance, maybe Holon : Agnosie or Eskapist. Thank me later.
Hey dude, would you mind giving your opinion on Miley Cyrus' vocal evolution/technique in some of her recent rock covers (heart of glass, zombie, etc...) ? That would be interesting
Also, hours of wealth is amazing as a mellow take to this album along with this. Love them both.
Hey Mike, have you listened to Kirk Hammett's EP "Portals?" If yes, what are your thoughts?
I would love if u would react to the music videos on this channel me and the bois are trying to make grunge/metal music I would like to know your thoughts, Hangman is my personal favorite. Thx for taking the time to read this.
These were good videos. But I liked it better when you were doing contradiction videos; best songs by a bad band/worst songs by a good band etc. Also, a video series with your favorite lyrics would be good
Top 5 Mercyful fate songs or something I don't know.
Why don't you do top 10 Megadeth songs?
If you watched the video, he said that he's working on that next!
being honest i'm more of a fan of ghost of perdition but this is still one of my favorites, its chorus is great.
Lots of people love that song
“Hey guys it is Mike from Become the Knight and my audio is actually working this time” 🤣
Wasn't lying about being burnt out lol
So it wasnt just me.
The attention to detail in this song is absolute perfection.
This has to be in their top 5 …which is fucking saying something.
Such a perfect end to an amazing album. Probably the most chilling chorus I’ve heard too.
Super chilling
Make a video from Frank Zappa and Genesis prog rock Era dude \m/
Thanks a lot for this series, Mike. I was in need of a new artist to be obsessed with and they are fucking phenomenal. Rock on, my dude.
Hell yeah 🤘
Their best ballad. Hands down. This song is just absolute beauty.
I most likely agree
Can you do a top 10 songs by the band Ligma? They're my favorite band right now
Honestly, sweet and sad chicken sounds like the chicken that didn't cross the road.
Not sure if you still do it but if you feel up to it the fine bros have a video where motley Crue reacts to kids react to motley Crue
Not to start any shit here, I absolutely share your love for Opeth, but I am slightly confused at your seeming admiration for Akerfeldt's laid back, feel oriented style of lead playing, given your less than enthusiastic sentiments towards David Gilmore. I always felt that there was, at least, a marginal similarity in their approaches.
Regardless! I love this song and thought your analysis was bang on.
The Baying of the Hounds is in Bleak levels of second to opener in my opinion too, regarding this album.
Opeth is my favorite band, this series was great. I cant commend you enough for picking 5 songs, for me this would have been an impossible task.
It was hard
I can't even pick 20 to be honest
And she's climbing the stairway to heaven...
Is anthrax the worst big four band
(Yes is the right answer)
Can you extend this series about opeth it's really good
This is an amazing song. Actually the first analysis you did years ago was the one that introduced me to Opeth and prog. It was definitely an acquired taste but what a fucking taste!!
I know you must be tired of yt policies but I would have loved you to do an analysis of other songs of this same album and others like Still Life.
Are you this "emotional" with other bands?
Oh man, I would love to see you talk about Burden.
the lyrics from this song just break my heart
Ahh, benighted would've made it in top 6
Definitely a hidden gem at the end of the album, always forget about it then end up playing it twice when going through Ghost Reveries.
This song always hits me hard - the lyrics are stand out...
Hey man. Do you love Portal?
Top 5 Judas Priest songs
Top 5 System of a Down songs?
You should continue this series. It has been so fun.
Most of the songs in Ghost Reveries are in DADFAE tuning
except Beneath the Mire (Drop D), Atonement, and Hours of Wealth (Standard tuning)
Mike do top 10 Maiden songs
My first Opeth song! First heard this song from your Opeth does pop music better video. Ive been hooked on this band ever since.
Happy to be of service
The copyright claims are absurd. These analysis videos are free promotion. I gave the band a second chance and bought Blackwater Park after Mike’s third video.
Can i get a reply
Such a haunting and beautiful way to end a exciting brutal album
Perfect choice
Top 11 Megadeth songs when?
Ffuuuuuu
It's impossible to NOT get emotional while listening to this song. Mike is right, it's all about the performance. It's the dynamics in their playing. When you play cleans on the guitar, you get such different tones depending on how hard or soft you pick the note. Once you've decided on how soft to play, you then have the challenge of CONSISTENTLY playing that soft throughout the song. Mikael Åkerfeldt is an amazing guitar player. Better than he gives himself credit for.
This is such a tasty song, great vid as always! \m/
Thanks dude 🤘
Highly legit. This album had awesome production.
It spanked all around haha
he fixed tha audio :)
What are your favourite songs from 'Still life' and 'In cauda venenum' (one from each album)?
Damn, I was 668.
This is pure beauty. Jesus this track is perfect.
I love how they weren't even going to put this song on the album because it's completely isolated from the story, but still did anyway. It's one of my favorites, and perfectly rounds out the album, musically, imo.
The song that made Opeth click for me. Forever grateful for your "Opeth Does Pop Music Better", otherwise I might not know about Opeth today.
It's interesting the way you describe the song. Don't know if it's because of the content of the lyrics but it's a cool description. About the ballads of this album, wich is my favorite along with BWP, I'm more attracted to Hours of Wealth. That song always puts me in a melancholic mood. And Mikael's guitar solo at the end is one of his best solos ever.
what would be your favorite "newer" Band/artist? for me it would be a band called Skynd. (i think i made an SSF suggestion on them at one point) i love those guys to death
Awesome series Mike! How about some stuff from Mr. Bungle? :D Greetings from Poland
You could do a damn analysis of every song by them love or hate and we’d be happy lol
But I know that would be career-endlingly annoying for you to make. Much love to you and Opeth🤘🏼
Hey, why dont u do top ten Black Sabbath songs
No
Would be interesting to know, what makes these 5 'chosen' songs better than others(?) I assume that it's all about the feelings they invoke in you while you're listening, am i right?)
Btw, thank you for these vids and your compositional insight of these songs. That's what I call 'a high quality content'. Keep rockin'🤘
Opeth has way too many excellent songs, many missing here, this series deserves to be expanded to Top 10 Opeth songs or even more. I know RUclips doesn't recommend these kind of videos of yours. But please continue, with other prog bands, as well. I like to see someone appreciating prog bands as much as I do.
Hey mike, whats your opinion on the Insurgentes album by Steven Wilson?
Did you actually take vocal lessions? You have a great voice and great ears :) or do you just know the chord/note and can recall it with your voice?
Dude, fantastic series. I'm new to your channel, just saw Opeth for the first time last week and this was just watch the doctor called for. I'm sure that this was exhausting to make but I hope you do it again for more artists. Keep it up!
What do you think about 'Gorguts' as a band? Are you familiar with them?
Hope the last one of the list is Reverie/Harlequin Forest...just saying ;)
this is another very good choice. I remember the analysis you did on this specific song years ago... the series was fun and as promised, here is my top 10 in no particular order other than chronological:
demon of the fall, the moor, face of melinda, blackwater park, leper affinity, wreath, in my time of need, ghost of perdition, burden, sorceress 2
I haven’t heard a new favourite song for a very long time. Thanks for introducing me to this. I’ve also never really listened to Opeth either so gonna dive in.
Hey mike I’m not usually the one to ask anything but it would be cool to see your favorite or least favorite queen songs. Love you content btw ✌🏿
Yeah this one is great for sure. I wish it was a minute or two longer. Then it would be my favorite Opeth song
I always felt this was one of Opeth's weakest chill songs, so it was cool to hear this perspective. Good vid and great series.
This is a based pick, my favorite song from Ghost Reveries which is a masterpiece album imo. This album comes out the most in my writing
I’ve really enjoyed this series. I’ve really liked opera for a while but never really understood the masterful arrangement and emotion value through or at least been able to understand how it truly effects me. I’d love to see this again with different band. But also keep care of yourself👍
Killer list!! I was hoping for the grand conjuration. When the main riff comes back in towards the end it gives me a full blown mindgasm.
fta
Excellent final choice! I was honestly expecting Benighted or Blackwater Park, and personally had my fingers crossed for April Ethereal, Harlequin Forest, or basically anything off Still Life. Love this series!
Benighted is great
how can one of the most sweet and beautiful songs be in one of the most heavy records of all time??
I guessed Grand Conjuration would be next, but nope, it was the song that came after, haha.
Yeah, this song is beautiful. Have you listened to the Soldier of Fortune cover bonus track off this record? It's fucking immaculate as well.
Not in a long time
