  • At some point you're going to need external storage for your Mac - whether it's a hard drive, SSD (Solid State Drive), or even a NAS (Network Attached Storage). In this video I go through and explain the top 3 external storage options available right now, their pros, cons, and features, and which is the right choice for you.

      Seagate gets a bad rep compared to WD, but I've had a pretty good experience with their internal and external drives. Only ever failed due to age or due to a critical error in the OS I was running while transferring data. Got a 750GB external that's probably 10+ yrs old that's just now showing cautions in CrystalDiskInfo. Another 4TB drive I've bought about 3 yrs ago which has C5 and C6 cautions, which is only due to my OS crashing while transferring data. Another 4TB around 8 yrs old that's still showing good.

    No one talks about durability.
    Which one has the better chances to keep data in 10, 20, 50 years ?
    That should be one of the main concerns regarding external storage

  • @NoEgg4u
    @NoEgg4u 2 года назад +15

    Not all SSDs have similar performance. In fact, they vary wildly, by as much as 100x or more.
    For example, Micro Center periodically sends out coupons for free 32 GB USB 3.0 flash drives (flash drives are SSDs).
    Their read speed is approximately 50 MB/s and their write speed is approximately 5 MB/s.
    If you find some USB 3.0 SSD that is priced low (many are), then expect that SSD to perform accordingly (slow).
    As to the chart @2:21, those results are a snapshot of a specific test, and are not a complete representation of the drive's speed.
    For example, that chart shows that the T7 is nearly twice as fast at the T5. That is true for the test that was conducted (and we do not know what that test was).
    If you test those drives with, for example, a 500 GB write test, the T5 will win, and by a country mile. Why?
    The T7 has fast SLC (I believe -- or might be MLC) NAND fabric used for cache. As long as the drive's cache does not get filled, the drive will run at warp speed. But if you write enough data to the T7, without rest, and fill its cache, then the T7 will slow to a crawl, because data will start going to its native NAND fabric, which is probably QLC NANDs, which are slow.
    But wouldn't the T5 suffer the same results once its cache runs out?
    The T5 will slow down a bit, but not too much. Why? I can only guess that its NAND fabric is faster than the T7's NAND fabric, for the non cache section of the drive.
    Also, one of the main advantages of an SSD is that if you hit it from 10 different directions with read and/or write requests, it will not slow down the drive. A mechanical drive will get noticeably slower if it is being asked to handle multiple, simultaneous requests.
    Another advantage SSDs have is that when you plug them in, they become available instantly. Mechanical drives have to spin up.
    Also, SSDs do not go to sleep. Mechanical drives do (well, many do, and depending on the drive, you might not be able to disable it from sleeping). And SSDs use less power, unless they are being written to without a break (something Chia processing would do).
    Some external drives have an activity light, and some do not. I find the light helpful. If I start a lengthy job and my monitor goes into power saver mode, I do not have to wake it up to know whether or not my job is still running. If the light is flashing, it is still running. If the light is steady, then the drive is idle.
    Also, most external drives include a short USB cable -- perhaps 16".
    If that is too short, then buy a longer one at the time you are making your purchase (to save on additional shipping costs if you place the order afterwards). And make sure you know what type of USB connection is on both ends of the cable. And also make sure that the cable is USB 3.0 (or higher) certified. If it is not stated, then keep searching. Read reviews to see if people are complaining about the cable.
    Cheers!

      I believe 2.0 is 480mb/s while 3.0 is 1gb/s? 3.1 and 3.2 are above 1gb/s so try and use 3.1 or better if possible. I don’t know of any external hard drives that’re faster than 2.0 speeds, even if they have a 3.0 or better usb connector. There are hybrid hdds, but at that point I’d just go with a ssd. I’d personally never use anything that is slower than 1gb/s.

    NASs are insane man

  • @Real_MisterSir
    @Real_MisterSir Год назад

    Something I've been pondering is, what's the "cheap man's NAS"? I will just use my own usecase as an example:
    I work from a home office with a lot of locally stored files that are integral to my clients, and a drive failure could be - quite frankly - catastrophic. My problem is that I really don't need anything fancy like access through wifi or excessive storage capacity. 4-8tb would be more than sufficient for my needs (8tb would purely be "nice to have", by no means necessary). And I would not mind hooking up the NAS via an ethernet cable or similar to allow for decent read/write speeds. Anything over PCIe 3.0 speeds would be overkill tho.
    Essentially I would just need two 2-4tb ssds set up in raid so if one drive fails, the other acts as backup. And this config would be linked directly to the mobo with a cable connection.
    When I'm looking at options, they're all extremely pricey and way overkill in terms of features and expandability and size for what I need. Basically even just a tiny bay with 2x4tb nvme drives would do. But at a consumer friendly price. I use my drives for work, but I am no enterprise business owner with unlimited pockets, and forking out near $1000 or more for a drive setup is pretty mad in my mind, when direct drive nvmes can be had with 2tb for less than 150 bucks.

    • @CreatedTech
      @CreatedTech  Год назад +1

      Search "Synology 2 Bay NAS DiskStation" on Amazon or your local shopping website. It's quite cheap, and you'll get access to all the Synology software/benefits etc. You would set up the two drives (either HDD or SSD if you have the extra cash) in a RAID setup where if one drive failed, it wouldn't matter. That's the cheapest and easiest option IMO.
      Then you just plug an ethernet cable from the NAS enclosure into your router, and you get access over wifi (can be a bit slow if you don't have Wifi6), or ethernet if your computer is also attached to your network via an ethernet cable. If the latter, you will get speeds around 100MB/s which is fast enough for 95% of people.

    • @Real_MisterSir
      @Real_MisterSir Год назад +1

      @@CreatedTech Thanks for the quick response, appreciate the tips! I will do a little digging into the Synology 2 Bay and see what is available. I'm running a 1gbit fiber connection and desktop with ethernet connected to router. So I guess transfer speeds should be just fine no matter what.
