Hi guys! Today I'm going to share with you the difference between External SSD vs External HDD. I have an External SSD and External HDD. Let's start the comparison
1. Appearance
-The SSD is significantly smaller and thinner than the HDD, making it more compact. Additionally, it weighs about a quarter as much as the HDD, enhancing its portability.
2. Speed
The SSD boasts significantly higher speeds than the HDD according to advertised specifications. A practical test involving the transfer of the same file to both drives confirmed that the SSD performs faster, as expected.
3. Cost
Despite the advantages of SSDs, they are much more expensive than HDDs. For the price of a 1 terabyte SSD, you could purchase a 5 terabyte HDD, offering significantly more storage capacity for a lower cost.
In conclusion, if your work involves frequent file transfers and video editing, investing in an SSD is advisable despite its higher cost due to its performance benefits. However, for those needing basic storage for archiving files without concerns about speed, an external HDD is sufficient. If budget is not an issue, an external SSD is the optimal choice for both performance and storage needs.

Unlike others, you said it right. Buy HDD if you just want to save stuff so as to free up space from computer.
This is what I was expecting to hear. Thank you
I did. Now it died after 20ish uses.
@@ukrd94its 2023,, ssd prices dropped significantly, the video is outdated
Great video and very good advice. I recently started using SSDs and have been blown away by the extra speed in transferring files.
Great explanation and very helpful. I have a Western Digital 160GB from 2008 that I am JUST now running out of space on so this is helpful with explaining the difference of SSD and HDD and which one is right for me. Thanks!
ganda ng content mo tol! one day lalaki din tong chanel mo just continue doing awesome content i also like how you speak very clear
Thanks for the break down my friend
Amazing vid, quick info, good info. Big thanks man
Nice explanation. Very thorough. An external SSD would be a great compliment to one of the new M1 Macs that Apple has been bringing out -or- for for a "scratch" drive when editing video. A 3.5" external HDD is great to have if you are doing image backups of a number of computers to an external drive for storing off-site.
As you said, it depends heavily on the use case which you should buy.
Very helpful. Can you point me in the right direction hardware wise to enable me to download 128gb of data (photos and videos mostly) directly off two iPhones? I haven’t been able to sync them with my iMac so I‘m hoping doing it directly from the phones to external storage will work. I’m just unsure whether I need to use USB, SSD or something else? I want something portable and had already settled on the SanDisk you show in this video if that would work. Do I just need to get a lightening adapter? Hope you can help. Thanks, Amanda.
Thank you so much. It's very helpful
Use an SSD for files being used daily, use an HDD for files your not using as often, as simple as that.
Explains why my HDD bit the dust after 3 months....
@@ukrd94what brand hdd was it?
@@ukrd94Now we really need to know what brand it was!
Because only that may actually “explain why your HDD had to bite the dust”.
Thank you for helping me make up my mind!
Thanks man! Great explanation.
Thanks for the simple comparison for us newbies.
super helpful! Thank you

Can I use 1TB USB 3 pendrive as a SSD hard drive

is one more reliable? I have been having to transfer all my footage to new external hard drive after a couple years because its starting to act strange and im scared to lose all my footage
For long lasting important files I would recommend Hard disk than SSD. Because SSDs only have NAND Gate technology that will wear off in different climates and less read and write cycles due to current flowing in chip could weaken the circuit track. In hard disk files will be saved in magnetic platter that will not lose and is easy to recover than SSD. SSD is best in performance and the other plus point of SSD is having no magnetic platter from work you can wiggle, but not best on reliability and durability.
HDD is not always easy to recover at all. A little drop can ruin the hard drive forever and taking it to a recover center will cost about $1000 to get it fixed
@@okamikitsunegaming Only professionals can recover easily you need special tool for it to recover like I do here can recover ruined hdd. Only ssd you cannot recover when if is physically damaged.
so if we are not professional then what to use?@@Maniacguy2777
you didnt touch much on durability. You see the value of the storage is to have the files secured. I have 10 external HDD's unfortunately, about half of them are unusable because of mechanical failure.. I am hoping that SDD wont have that problem so I'm considering to buy one..
What about in case of durability and machine failure which one of them will be easy to recover in case of failure?
Thanks for cleaning the confusion. Please tell me which drive data is easily recoverable if face shock or damage ?
SSD always, because HDD has moving parts in it and are much more prone to damage caused by external trauma. Just handle it carefully, you're then good to go.
Any advice or recommendations for gaming storage on a PS5 so my kids can store their games?
SSD IS ALL ABOUT SPEED NOT SIZE SIMPLE
What about brands? What are the most reliable brands? And what is THE most reliable brand? Thanks
Thank you, great explination!
SSD or HDD What shoul I buy for store data for long term. Coz I have some impotart official documents that I have to keep for so long.
Thanks for watching! HDD is good if you don't have to always access the data, SSD is usually for faster access times.
Which one would you recommend for college going students?
(I will use my laptop mainly for coding and sometimes video editing)
Hdd if your fine with waiting. Ssd is better overall but I know college is expensive so if you got money go for ssd
Loved the video. Short and concise
I do a lot of video editing projects on my Lenovo Y50 gaming computer and have a Western Digital My Book 8 TB External Hard drive. With SSD drives getting cheaper, you can buy a 8 TB Samsung SSD for $650 and a 2.5 USB 3.1 external Hard drive enclosure. The speeds are very fast to access your files. I'll keep a non SSD external hard drives for backups and my main files on the external SSD.
Can you use an internal SSD with external hard drive ?
I'm thinking between hdd and ssd to use as a backup drive only for photos and videos and I only use phone and iPad Pro . I've heard hdd doesn't work with phone and iPad due to low power connectivity .so do u think samsung t7 shield 2tb would be a good buy for longterm storage?
the trick i use is to link the hdd and phone through a pc, then use the pc as a go between, transfer from phone to portable hdd, it does throttle transfer speeds, but is great for what you want to do
Torogi Pro
does external ssd compatible in all media player like televisions and usb capable audio appliances? thanks
Yes, if it’s on the computer it can move to the ssd as long as there is space
Bro which one is best for gaming on PS3 SSD or HDD
I've got one of those crappy Lenovo slim 1s for high school and as soon as u buy it there is no storage thanks for the video
Which is best to store movies on it?
I have a 250 gb ssd and I don’t have any storage left but I want to download more games but I don’t want to pay 100 dollars for a 1 tb ssd because I kinda broke no cap what’s the difference if I was to get an ssd
The speed it's a lot faster .. and i mean a lot. So yeah you're going to want to get an SSD for gaming for sure but yes the price is not nice lol but tell yourself this are you willing to wait a long ass time for your game files to load on an HDD ?
My plan is to store data mostly travel pics and videos as a backup which one last longer? Like even if i open it after 5 years it should be there 😅
SSD may be faster but HDD is better for long term storage, they have bigger capacity and are much often used as long term storage or back up
@@Ferko_does_dumb_sh-t thanks for clarification
Speed is not a problem need some keep old memories as backup for long term
@@EMPERORakshaypatil Glad to help, HDD is also cheaper you will save some money
Print pictures off.
Only way to be sure
Hardware breaks
Technology changes
Use printed as back up
@@ThreadbowAh, and how are you going to print out the videos? :')
And travel pictures are like a whole lot to store and an incredibly time-consuming process, so printing each one of them out isn't always a good idea, especially for people that go on tours very often.
Is the toshiba canvio basics 2tb good/durable
As I photographer, I need to access different drives weekly if not daily to edit and move around. The idea of having 10tb of SSD’s including a backup of my computer on them would probably cost thousands of dollars. That’s not much of an option.
What about for gaming since I have a 256 gb ssd in my pc only I got no space so I was thinking to buy the ssd you showed in the video and literally have it plugged in my pc always and forever without moving it. So what should I do cause I want to download some games without worrying about my 256 ssd internal.? So ssd or hdd for my scenario?? Thanks!
@@harshgoyal7611 couldn't he upgrade his internal SSD and transfer everything from his 256gb SSD to his new 1TB or higher internal SSD? I think i heard that internal SSD aren't supposed to be removed or tampered with but i might be wrong. ?
I have a Toshiba external hard drive where I would drag and drop my photos. Would it be safe to transfer these photos to that small SSD Sandisk?
The new ssd can I use between a DELL computer and a MacBook or iPad ?
Hdd has longer lifespan because it is magnetic platter inside not a NANDGATE chip that dies easily
What about for gaming?
what about reliability?
I got a 3tb ssd Hewitt packard to use as external from a liquidator store for $5. It is brand new.
Awesome video! What about durability? One of my worries is losing my files for good (again). I feel like hdd because it's a physical disc is prone to failing.
SSD is more durable than hdd .
it would definitely be ssd ofc,
@@vamsikrishna1934how bro.. i read that HDD recovery is possible but SSD not
Planning on transferring files that include videos, 3D models and stuff for my computer graphics class and game development. Maybe some Adobe Photoshop files too.
Does the SSD have an enclosure too? Or does it not contain an enclosure?
You can buy an enclosure for a 2.5 SSD and I think they make enclosure for SSD sticks.
The other important thing is HDDs are more reliable, they have been used for decades.
While SSDs are new, so it's not yet clear how long they can hold the data without issues.
HDD isn't reliable at all. SSD you can drop it accidently and it will still work because it doesn't have moving parts. HDD you drop it and it is gone forever unless you have a lot of money to fix it.
no way for HDD anymore, you should have mentioned what if it's dropped down
Pinoy pala si sirr🥰
Hdd is more durable, because of its technology. It can withstand way more overwrite/move/delete cycles, as per the SSD it has a way smaller durability life, also you're not sure how many broken sectors do you get when getting it.
Hdd is prone to damage if you drop it, more than the SSD, so it breaks more easily.
SSD is faster, lighter and can save you time. Serves the same purpose, for as long as it's sectors are not wearied down or damaged.
Hdd is durable, cheaper and can be used for a longer period of time, if you don't hit it / drop it.
Make your decision based on what fits your needs. There is not a right it wrong decision.
Also data on an HDD will last a lot longer than on an SSD, ie if you plug in your HDD and SSD in 5 years, you will most likely find the data in proper condition on an HDD but SSD no promises
for addition po ..pag HDD pwde mag ka bad sector compare SSD hindi longer life span..base on my experience ..but super mahal ng ssd lalo kung external type :)
so sinasabi mo ba na mas okay yung hdd kaysa sa ssd in terms of durability?
so mas ok ang ssd?
Thank you
Can you tell us which is more reliable, an SSD or HDD...?
For long term reliability- HDD 😎.
I would do SSD. Due to HDD, motors tend to fail, moving parts, cpu boards and are tuff to recover. Idk? Wht iexperianced..✌️
Flash memory can fail too, and it's harder to recover than a HDD which can can be easily recovered by putting the platter in another same model.
Author ano po mas better sa 2 hdd or sdd for gaming? salamat
sana mapansin
Ssd amigo
if you are taking files on and off al the time go ssd, simply because it uses less power and is quite durable
if you want to backup long termish, use hdd, they are really reliable especially if used only occasionally, and also backup to the cloud.... 1 backup is not enough...and key stuff backup to high quality dvd....yes even in 2023, backup ultra important stuff to your hdd , to the cloud, and to high quality dvd....when everything else fails...i guarantee the dvd-r will be fine.
but if you are using a laptop and removing stuff and putting stuff on disk all the time....dont use hdd, as it uses a lot more power and will drain battery
V helpful
What happens if I drop either or both of them?
HDD will be affected more since it has moving parts, but I've heard the data might be able to be recovered considering the degree of damage though. But for SSD, recovery isn't assured.
External HDD is not suitable to connect with smartphone .even you connect battery drains faster .ssd is more optimised to connect to smartphones .so ssd is a better choice and prices of SSD comes down recently .
daisy chain it through a pc, plug hdd to usb on pc, then plug phone into other usb, it throttles transfer speeds, but it works, and keeps cost of device down a fair bit
but you can find cheapie 250Gb ssd for under $40
when do u need to carry 1 tb ....
When you deal with photos or videos professionally?
I'm broke so imma go for a hdd anyway
Which one is more durable
@@nsnarayan1159 hdd bruh
Which one last longer? I hears HDD.
how about the longevity?
supposedly an ssd can last 8-10 years if it doesn't get exposed to extreme temperatures
Good!
Were you even born, when they came out with these books for newbees, called 'computers 4 dummies' & then came 'internet 4 dummies?' Well all i'm trying to find, is which one is EASIEST, 4 dummies (HDD or SSD)! I just want to copy EVERY file i have on my current pc & store them on an external drive, incase my pc craps out & i'll need to transfer all my data to a new one! That means, my music, pix, videos (a few) & my docus. I might want to update once a month, for any new stuff or add-ons to current docs; but i am NOT a pc geek, or wiz or what have you. So I want to just plug something in and have a video tell me every step i need to take along the way? Can anybody do that?!
yeah, but you probably could recover on External HDD over External SSD if something would to happen !
Cheap is expensive 😜
Did anyone not know that SSDs are smaller and more expensive before watching this video?
SSD will never be good for long term storage. They’re good as quick temporary storage but never good for long term ones even though there are cases of USBs from 10 years ago that still readable up to now.
HDD vs SSD
HDD pros
-High Storage
-Cheap
HDD cons
-Very expensive to repair (need to bring it to the data recovery expert)
-Fragile
-having a problem when you long time not using
SSD pros
-Fast Read/Write Speed
-Compact size
-Not Fragile
-No problem even long time you dont used it
SSD cons
-Expensive
-low storage
-short r/w lifespan
For Daily Used Buy HDD
For Back-up buy SSD
I rather buy SSD for important files than HDD..
Since The HDD is very fragile inside once you accidentally drop it its 50/50 dead even its brand new. And HDD is very expensive to repair you need to bring it to the expert..
And if you are not using it for a long time the HDD will malfunction..
Rather have less read/write life span and less storage than Having fragile HDD that cannot be repaired most of the time buy user..
my real experience ssd life span 2 years exactly, ssd issue hidden when reach limited tbw problem and undetected or damaged. hdd better than ssd
Never go with HDD at all. You drop it then it is gone forever. I had a External HDD and accidentally drop it from mid point from my ankle and knee. Now it can't read at all and It might be damage forever. Taking it to a data recovery center cost 1k
literally learned nothing lol.. but thanks for the effort to help other Im sure
Thx. U made my day. I just want to store movies & junk. So ssd really dosen't matter to me. 😂 that was the confusion i had. Weather pay large prize or get hdd.
But how about the quality ? Will it get corrupted faster ? 😝
I have no idea what "ventinine dollars" is.
when a filipino tryna fakew american accent
In short
SSD - Sports Car
Fast, Expensive but carries limited passengers.
HDD - Bus
Slow, Cheaper but carries a lot of passengers.

Can you use a external SSD on a laptop or computer that has an internal HDD drive?
yes, of course
