Cool thing to see James say this. Dave actually said he respects and likes James more than Lars. He thinks Lars is a sneaky shit for what he was trying to do with the No Life Til Leather boxset.
From an interview I read in German Dave not only expressed outrage over Lars trying to sneak his name on song writing credits but that royalties from Kill’em All were going to Hammett and not him. I can see his frustrations with this because his name appears on two albums for songwriting credits and not for Leper Messiah on Master of Puppets and he was never asked to be part of the Rock and Roll Hall of fame. And it was on Lars insistence, not James, that only members who performed on albums be part of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Even Newsted called bullshit on this knowing full well that Mustaine was one of the key reasons Metallica even got off the ground.
So Lars goes out of his way to make sure Metallica uses the man’s music, all the way into the third album without crediting him for Leper Messiah, and not pay him royalties for his music, and years later try and sneak his name on music he certainly wouldn’t have been able to have written at the time. I can certainly understand why there was and always will be friction between him and Lars. It’s naive to think he should just sit back not say something as the band you were once in becomes the biggest band on the planet and you were part of that nucleus only to be told without words in the press “We’re using the music you told us not to use and we’re not allowing you in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame”. Gee. I wonder why there’s resentment.

If Dave didn't make a big deal out of it noone would talk about it.
He helped write a few songs in the bands embryonic stages.
And he never wrote anything for leper messiah, theirs a reason he's had to just "claim" he did and couldn't take it further. He wanted to destroy Metallica and their credibility he would have said anything.

Totally.. Mustaine wrote half the first album.. Period.. Without the songs they have no first album and no record deal.. This is a fact.. Which means they would probably release in 1984 when they had replaced those songs without them and I highly doubt they would have been as impactful as they still struggled to write without Mustaine on RtL.. Escape being a fine example of that.. Still playing his solos on the songs they used there to. People need to understand, especially the ones who say that Megadeth is amazing and now we have 2 awesome bands which is true and therefore Dave shouldn't be salty - even today, after all this time and the accomplishments of Megadeth which is basically a solo project of his, Dave would probably prefer to be in Metallica. He'd throw away it all if a magical Jini appeared and offered him to go back in time and behave differently so that he stayed in Metallica. That's incredibly tough to live with. He has a mental image of Lars, James and Cliff in his head, they were a family for him and he never treated band members in Megadeth like that for a reason.

I should add that as a fan for more than 30 years of both bands, Metallica being my favorite, Metallica fans are insufferable fools when it comes to this topic.
I placed myself in everyone’s shoes to try and get what that mindset would’ve been like. I don’t blame them for kicking Mustaine out. Hell even Mustaine admits that it was toxic. But saying Mustaine is “just butthurt” is refusing to recognize how significant Lars and James thought his music was that they wanted to use his music all the way into their third album.

We didn't know about AA back in the 80s? BS. Theyve been around since after the great depression. It was often mentioned in movies in 50's, 60, 70's and jokes about AA and AAA existed just as long. Everyone back then had heard of AA. Or the Jerry Lewis Telethon. Every rock star and actor knew of Silver Hill rehab facility where entertainers have gone since 30s for alcohol and drugs.
Judy Garland, Rita Hayworth, Jerry Lee Lewis, Liza Minnelli. Truman Capote and Greg Allman in 1977 when Allman Brothers were one of biggest touring acts that all spent as much time in (expensive) rehab. They knew of the low rent option of AA because they couldn't afford clinics that catered to wealthy musicians and actors.
But being aware of AA and admitting to yourself that you need to go is two different things. The latter is always the big hang up.
It wasn't cool to talk about rehab but still shameful at the time unlike 20yrs later where it became cliched and a badge of honor.
It just wasnt a thing with 20 somethings rockers burning the candle from both ends in their prime unless there were repercussions or once they hit 40 and health, personal, business repercussions are costlier rehab becomes standard.
