We forget how big of a metallica super fan Jason was/is. We all expected him o shit all over lars and james and he instead explains how they are the original garage band duo and shows them love..nothing but class Jason. You are awesome man.
Him crediting them as the first garage band duo is a back-handed compliment, dripping in sarcasm. He's basically saying he and Kirk aren't even members of that band, which is another dig at them. But I agree, Jason is a class act, he has every right to be upset, and has done nothing to deserve anything less than full respect from everyone, including the band.
@@justinatest9456 haha Hey man, we all are entitled to an opinion!
@Snakeoilresin 100 brother! I personally enjoy watching the "One" grammy's live show still! LANDMINE!
U have to remember Jason isn't some loser dweeb behind a keyboard. He knew these guy's and still are cool with them.
Jason saying he did well on Justice is a massive understatement. Blackened is amazing.

1:44 THANK YOU MR. NEWSTED! The bass, not just on 'Justice', but 'Puppets', and 'Lightning' was mixed poorly to amplify the guitars and drums. Why? Because Metallica was, and always will be, a drums, and guitar, focused band. It's been that way since their inception. The leaked isolated bass tracks have further shown how much nuanced, and character, in Jason's, AND Cliff's, playing is buried under layers, upon layers of guitars and drums.
Listening to those isolated bass tracks also really made me realize what I thought I was hearing on the cds all these years was not the bass lines, but the low end of those stacked rhythm guitar tracks. There's an old interview where Jason said to practice for his Metallica audition, he had to listen to bootleg live shows because the bass on the old albums(Puppets, Lightning) are mixed SO LOW that he couldn't tell what was going on. What a lot of people think is Cliff's bass is actually James's guitars. What's the big sonic difference between 'Puppets', 'Lightning', and the 'Justice' albums? The bass was mixed low on the "Puppets" and 'Lightning', but 'Justice' was lowered even further.
Yes, Rush, Thin Lizzy, Black Sabbath, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Kansas, Iron Maiden, Queen have a variety of bass sounds that range from really mid range punch, to low end scooped, BUT stand out clear, and audible, along side, the massive sound of the rest of the band because they were thoughtfully mixed. Listen to The Jimi Hendrix Experience albums, filled to brim with all kinds of effects, guitar layers, drums, and the bass is heard quite well.
We can like the song writing compositions, live performances, and the fond memories, metallica has given us, in their many incarnations, over the years, but that doesn't mean we can't acknowledge, and constructively critique, the nature of their sonic predilections, and the effect it has on the listeners experience.
well said
Honestly, I don't blame Jason for leaving Metallica when he did, the rest of the guys in Metallica never treated him well like they really should have, Jason did the right thing by leaving Metallica in my honest opinion.
Yeah, this has already been said a million times over
Huge mistake
@Paul Wreck you're nuts. Given the opportunity to be in the biggest metal band of all time. Sounds like a quitter. His side projects were terrible! Where's his comeback? Mustain went on to do a big thing! Echo brain🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@anthonydalicandro8848 ur nuts they treat him like shit. Money isnt worth being treated like shit. And he already had money.
Could you imagine working with James diva personality? Id quit too!
He is the spirit of Metallica after cliff. He's such a fan and one of my inspiration on bass the pick attack is amazing..
Agreed. Jason made playing bass cool to my 17 year old self.
Well said, my friend, (of misery).😉🎸
Cliff was and always will be a legend - those three albums from his era are pretty much perfect.
Many of the Jason era albums have problems - either no bass or shitty songs. But that ain’t Jason’s fault. He always gave 110%, especially on stage. Jason is a legend also, the only thing is, he is still with us.
I agree but when you think about it with how was heavy the and Justice album is with his picking style over the songs it would feel moody a lil bit but what happened had happen and Jason still and will still be a legend
Jason played bass on the biggest Metallica album the is sonically the best Metallica album so…it’s cool.
You can hear the bass really well on Puppets in particular. How crappy would Orion or Leper Messiah sound without audible bass??
EXACTLY
That was Cliff Burton on bass before he died. They never seemed to accept Jason as a replacement. Years later he was always 'The new guy'.
Dude come on. Get your head out of your ass, MOP doesn’t have audible bass except for a couple places where it’s the lead instrument
The bass cliff played was too quiet in the mix as well
I think this should settle ALL arguments around jasons bass
I hope so too. Its exhausting at this point.
Arguments should have been left out ages ago, it’s in history, it worked, we love it the end! Live Jason was great. Metallica is awesome, people need to just listen to the music and enjoy it!

Unfortunately his story has changed over the years.
Jason's too good of a human being for the likes of James & (especially) Lars
yup, Lars is a total dosh.
The shame of all this is that "The Wait" was done in a mix very similar to AJFA...but without the bass guitar turned down, and it sounded phenomenal, including Lars' drums. So, as usual, Lars' paranoia about his drum sound makes little sense.
nahhh the whole sound there is different, they didnt mix the garage days album , the only songs that are the same as justice are the b-sides which were recorded around the same time as justice and used the same gear (breadfan, the prince)
"The Wait" is amazing. A really good cover. Damn good.
In my opinion James and Lars feared Jason overshading Cliff's memory and their own talent. If they would have unleashed Jason instead of holding him back, I believe Metallica's music would have been so much better.
I miss Jason \m/💀\m/
He kinda got a "redemption arc" on the black album. he plays a pretty big part on that album
1000/100 right…! But James shouldn’t afraid of his talent. He will always be the band’s king and Jason a real prince of bass and vocals…
Yes Jason wrote amd recorded so many amazing albums after leaving Metallica...
@@badass6300 Haha, you are effen funny... Fact is, when he was hired, he was the BEST musician in that entire band, just like Cliff was
I don't like what they did....but
Jason has such a good, positive attitude. Very likable guy.
He is a great bass player they just never realized it at the time, dude crushed it time after time
Year 7883: No bass on Justice. St. Anger snare.
Hi Mikey, it gets kinda tiresome when you've been hearing about this since 1988! 😅
Death magnetic: mastered too loudy
Year 7884: Black album sell-out. Load and Reload pop music.
@@heartsthekitteh6239 For people to call Load and Reload "pop music" is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. I mean, I much prefer Metallica's older albums by far, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't absolutely jam out to some Load/Reload tunes. A lot of those songs hit really hard and I can also relate to the lyrics here and there.

Jason rocked the house down whenever they played Justice live. His bass could be heard as well as anyone else.

Always loved how you could really hear Ron's bass on no life till leather, but always sad how cliffs basses were mixed. That's y I always lived megadeth Jr's bass was always clear in the mix.
AJF is brilliant bass up bass down brilliant jason made up for it live he was Awesome . Tallica boys regret treating jason like the new kid while he was in the band all so jason had the best times of his life in the band. First album with no cliff not easy for the boys it is what it is people time marches on🤘
Totally agree man, I think the sound of Ajfa is so different to anything else around at the time and still to this day which makes it unique and iconic. The guitar tone is nasty, never even realised the bass had been turned down on release, just loved the aggressive sound
The remixed "bass restored" version of AJFA is like a revelation. It's the way that album was meant to be from the beginning.
@@Assimilator702 I've heard it, prefer the original
@@jochencooper2751 When AJFA was released Car Audio was in its infancy, and the CD sounded, (and still sounds) completely incredible in a vehicle, with a hi end car stereo. Nobody even noticed the lack of Bass Guitar, at the time. In my honesty and humble opinion, it’s the BEST sounding Metallica (or Metal) recording EVER! I just listened to it today, and it’s still relevant, and doesn’t sound 3 & 1/2 decades old! It’s truly a MASTERPIECE! Just like all four of their pre-‘Black’ Album. You gotta remember this was a band that received ZERO radio, or MTV exposure. Their first and only video ‘ONE’ had to be reported from MTV’s Total request. Metallica was only discovered by my generation as teens, at the time, by friends passing recorded cassettes to one another, and saying, “CHECK THIS SHIT OUT!!! THIS BAND IS INCREDIBLE!!!” And to reiterate once again, it sounded phenomenal in your car stereo with a couple amps, and your subwoofers in the truck. The talk about not having sufficient Bass Guitar, is an old, boring debate. As Jason said, “It was mixed and recorded, exactly how it was supposed to be!” Coming from the ‘abused’ bassist, I think it should end the cross and whines from people who weren’t even alive at the time.
@@jochencooper2751 - Yeah. It is some generational thing. Thinking a piece of creative work from 30 years ago should have been done different somehow. If the universe was that simple. It is really asinine.
I remember loving the guitar tone on that album. Also remember bands in guitar magazines - Anthrax specifically - saying you really shouldn't mix an album that way. AJFAs sound did not really catch on. It is unique. Saying it should be re-recorded or remixed is pretty narrow minded. The kind of odd thought process that leads to book burning and crap. You don't like it because by today's standards it doesn't make sense. So get rid of.
Jason is so very slick in his disses, you have to be really sharp to pick up on it. The people who pick up on it can, and to the rest who don’t, he gives the above it all impression.
That pricked my ears too, when he said that James and Lars were "the original garage band". LOL I thought, Hmm, that's odd, coming from someone of Newsted's music-historical background. Now I see why.....
This whole ordeal never even occurred to me until I saw a video about it, and this is my favorite Metallica album and I even played a little bass, I just never noticed it but I've always loved how this album sounds. The drums and guitar tone are so perfect on this album.
AJFA was the first cassette I bought. I was in middle school, hadn't picked up a bass yet, and even I thought it sounded thin and that the drums sounded "off." I didn't have the musical knowledge yet to know what the deal was, but I knew it sounded bad, especially compared to the cassette I bought less than a week later, "Rust in Peace."
Jason may be right, but I distinctly hear more bass in Metallica when Cliff played. Justice was the ONLY album with Jason that the bass was nearly inaudible. I've heard the redone version of Justice with the bass turned back up, and it's much better. Lars and James were just being dickheads. I watched the interview with Lars, James and Bob Rock. Bob was telling these 2 that it was a mistake to turn down the bass as much as they did. I mean, sure the album came out alright, but it could have been great.
Knowing how Lars and James became griddie don't be surprised they'll sell a bass turned up ...and Justice for All album to add in their bank accounts
Finger picking and amp setup lent for a pounding bottom end by Cliff.
No
Metallica could end this entire discussion in one fell swoop by releasing a remixed version of AJFA. All they need is a capable and ballsy producer who’ll take the tapes, then lock them out of the studio until it’s done. It would sell out in minutes.
Ahdy Khairat's the man
@metallic thunder Soundgarden remixed their Ultramega OK album which was released the same year as AJFA, in 1988. Their budget was way smaller than Metallica’s I’m guessing since it was on an independent label, SST compared to Metallica on Elektra.
The tapes aren’t in good enough physical condition to remix and remaster the album.
@metallic thunder Sounds like James is still mad that Jason left. Turning the bass down intentionally was a dick move and the other members are assholes, including Kirk. Metallica has gone downhill since Cliff Burton died.
Exactly. Get Flemming or Bob Rock to mix it properly.
If you listen to the great Newsted album, you hear a perfect sound, produced by Jason himself. Imagine that sound on the Justice album...
Having listened to it both with the bass up vs bass down, I can't see why it wouldn't have made the same impact. Aside from the actual conversation of why it was left out, I don't think anything would be much different.
Kill em all has the most audible bass of the 80s somehow
That is true, but I've actually read comments that say the bass is buried on KEA, which I think means that they're not listening to music on some actual speakers. Yeah, I can barely hear any bass coming through a single crappy smartphone speaker.
Yea, I was listening to No remorse today on the way home and the bass is very present. More so than any other Metallica album that I can think of.
I think it depends on which copy you have
I think KEA was the best mixed Metallica Album of the 80s. Cliff was just killing it in the backbeat. Ride The Lightning and Master sounded tinny by comparison. Justice the guitars and drums were crunchy but the bass was lost.
I'd add Puppets to that.
Both were mixed well.
Lighting could have been mixed better as the kick drums are barely audible and the bass could have been turned up a notch.
After all these years, I still get the sense that Kirk Hammett is just an employee for James and Lars' band.
the guy from megadeath also once worked at metallica.
You’re smelling correctly. Further, it’s obvious that the Lars/James industrial complex is not a 50/50 owner split, and I’m sure it doesn’t take long to guess who the majority stakeholder is…
If it weren't for the money, Kirk probably would've left years ago. It's clear he either doesn't input a lot or they just refuse to use anything he submits. I'm glad they're finally allowing him to do solo stuff and be a proper artist again.
Cool vid.
I bought JFA the first week it was out.
ha, saw some funny bit where Lars asks someone, maybe the engineer, "Didn't we record bass here?"
Response was something like "It's the way you wanted it."
Trial by fire for Jason in the beginning.
Bar tab, Call Jason. Heck, he used to balance the books for Flotsam !
I tend to prefer the bass to be a bit louder in heavy music or any music for that matter. That's how I mix my own shit.
Glad there are remixes out there finally
And Marty Friedman cried over a missing solo part... Got to give it to Jason for dealing with AlcoholicA. He has his own town now, and does all of the side projects he wants and looks pretty happy.
prob used it as a excuse to get to Japan
And Justice for Jason is absolutely amazing I usually prefer that to the original album
Me too. That shit is amazing
Nah, the fan mix on that album is atrocious and the bass is far too loud. People only like it because it gives your the mindset of "Oh there's bass, so it's better!". People don't get that it needs to be properly mixed and put at a comfortable volume, while also remixing the sound of the drums and guitar to fit it in. I've heard way better fanmade bass mixes. Justice For Jason is just crap. If you're looking for a good Justice mix listen to this guys stuff: ruclips.net/video/h85k0VcFB8c/видео.html
I've heard the And Justice for all with bass and it sounds great
You heard the 3CD Expanded Edition ?
There's a video on RUclips called "Justice for" where and just as far as remixed with Jason's base higher in the mix. Some of the best lines were amazing and really complimented the songs.
2:44 Lars calling
This makes sense - Cliff's 3 minute solo is buried in the mix on Call of Khtulu, and in other songs as well.
For some reason, James and Lars don't like the bass too loud, to the point in Justice..... case it's almost impossible to hear in some cases.
Too much blow.
It was their ego in wanting their individual parts to be heard
It was a nod to cliff being gone
It wasn't ego or a nod to cliff. He says it the video they (Lars) always wanted the bass turned down and unfortunately no one (mixers, sound engineers) had the balls to say "no! That's not how it's done." Until Bob Rock came along.
It's not "almost impossible to hear", there is no bass on the record.
Finally!!! Thanks Jason!!!

He's right about Puppets and Lightning, seems like Metallica were never fond of that instrument. And guys, he's not talking about bass solos or leads (where of course you can hear it), he's talking about bass throughout the songs, as a rhythmic instrument. And yeah, in that sense bass was very marginal on those albums too
I have much respect for Lars and James and I always will, there phenomenal musicians, you cannot take that away from them. They remind me of Don Henley and Glenn Frey. Definitely hogging up the spotlight and basically taking all the credit like a bunch of snobs.. Jason Newstead was a major contributor and the nucleus of that band. Never showcasing Jason's skills on the bass and it just pisses me off because And Justice for All album would have sounded more fucking badass with balls than just 3 musicians instead of a 4 piece ensemble the way it should have been in the first place!
They like "bright" music. No bass 😉
Do not ever use "Lars" and "phenomenal" in the same sentence. Or the same book.
I wonder what happened to the master tapes. I mean the original bass recordings has to be out there somewhere.
@@prevailwithme tape doesn't last if stored poorly.
The non-audible bass on AJFA is fascinating kind of like no cymbals on Peter Gabriel III (the album that Phil Collins got that 80s drum sound from) however I’m calling shenanigans and diplomacy here. Cliff’s bass was always audible and could be heard and Jason on Garage Days got to go wild.
my thoughts exactly. the no life till leather note makes sense, and cliff did do the "lead bass" thing a lot, but still...
Cliffs was more audible. But, There is alot of stuff he did on those albums that got buried.
@@justjeff600 The fact that more people don't realise this really annoys me. People always act like Jason was completely muted and Cliffs bass was louder than the guitars even though Lars up until the black album would always mute the bass as much as he could to get his drums the way he wanted
I never realized there were no cymbals on PG3
Agreed. Some of Burton's stuff was unnecessarily low but was never buried like Newsted was on And Justice For All.
Great album. Brilliant
I love ajfa. That being said, if you search for "ajfa remastered bass", there are multiple versions. Some are good, a couple are truly amazing. I don't care for the one that's bass heavy, but the two that sound like you would think an album should sound when properly mixed sounds truly incredible. If you haven't heard them search for them you'll be ecstatic that you did if you like the album to begin with
Those are the only versions of Justice I can stand to listen to
@@dathorndike4908 yeah, they make a great album truly epic

Nice sound FX, Jason.
I always took it as a symbolic absence or void where Cliff was such a short time earlier
Same here. Like a flag at half mast.
In this context of the album, Jason just executed the best bass sections this type of an album could have, so fucking what it interfered with james' rythm parts, it sounds wya tighter and together that way, on the black and load/reload he learned how to sustain a song in a more stable way, but the thing is he did PERFECT from the start of this band to his departure.
Really great basslines on AJFA. Its a shame you had to pry them out of the mix to hear what he was doing. The album is still a masterpiece. As a bass player myself Iappreciate being able to isolate those bass tracks to really hear what Jason was doing because he couldve just phoned it in-he didnt- he put in work.
AJFA a master piece...hmm. Compared to the rest of the crap albums that followed I suppose it is...
What interview is this clip from? I'd love to hear the full recording. Jason is MY bassist. I love Rob, I love what Cliff did for the first 3 albums, but I was like 3 years old when he was in the band. I missed that era. My Metallica was James, Lars, Kirk, and Jason. Dude is fucking Phenomenal. Still wish he'd been able to put out a second record under the Newsted band, as Heavy Metal Music was fucking killer the whole way through. But ya know, one-and-done is sometimes a good thing as well.
Ajfa was my first ever album. It was years before I realised bass even existed in music
AJFA was the first Metallica album I bought. I was 14. Was instantly hooked.
The same happened with Cliff, except in some parts, the bass is very little heard
honestly its bullshit that they did that to cliff, especially since he taught them everything they know about theory and arrangements. metallica wouldve just been another run of the mill thrash band if it wasnt for cliff
The bass is more than clear in the mix for KEA and Master of Puppets. It could have been turned up a little more in Lightning, but the kick drums could have also been louder on that album. I don't think anyone was trying to be an asshole to Cliff.
It was moreso just an error in judgement.
@@zahidmunoz4633 "metallica wouldve just been another run of the mill thrash band" ???
You do realize Metallica is one of the first Thrash bands? They definitely wouldn't have been "just another run of the mill thrash band" when Thrash Metal just became a thing with them.
With the bass and treble turned up on the stereo I can hear the bass just fine, and it sounds wonderful.
Garage days rerevisited had bass perfect w jason.

Go, Jason🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
the whole clicky thing on the drums started a whole new way of mixing drums i think . listen to the drums sound on pantera album. less thump and more click. makes the bass stand out more as well.
Florida Death Metal really got that tone dialed down in the 90's when Scott was producing all those bands as well. Drums are my favorite part of Justice and I see where you're going with Vinnie. More punch, less boom. A lot of guys were using wood beaters on kick pedals too. Very distinct.
@@andrewdomonic6603 yes alot of death metal bands started doing the click attack sound instead of the thump. the low end of the kick would interfer with the bass guitar.
I seriously was jacked when I heard Jason was hired after Cliff died. I was (& still am) a huge fan of his playing on "Doomsday For the Deceiver", (one listen to opening track Hammerhead, would convince any special needs person that he was very capable) & the garage days ep came out 👍... then, from there on, I was like, wtf?!? AND the whole time, he defended them & EVERYTHING they were doing, while I defended Jason to all the newer generation of Metallica fans that were continually spouting off about how much "Jason sucked compared to Cliff" 😕
I could never, & I mean NEVER convince them otherwise, NOT until I personally played them the 1st Flotsam and Jetsam album, then their jaws were on the floor..... Metallica did NOTHING to help Jason's skill as a bass player, but maybe, MAYBE even, the contrary... 🤔
One of my Favorite Metallica Albums, Love Jason!
Into Metallica since 88 I was young fella 18 years old when I first heard AJFA. It's their best album in my opinion, the drums and guitar's are hopping out of the speakers. I really think James and Lars are Metallica, they make all the decisions and are the bosses. They have/had big egos, turn down the bass.. But why? I just don't get it, the album would have sounded amazing. Tho it still sounds good now. Would you hear the bass on an Iron Maiden album, bet your ass you will it's in your face. An injustice was done to the Justice album that's my take.
2 big bosses in the band and what they say goes... Anyway poor Jason got a raw deal, he was treated like shit, so he did the right thing and got out, with a couple mill in his pocket. Well done Jason. I love Metallica but that's band politics for ya!
It was not like that before Cliff's death. If you see all previous records were produced by Metallic as a band. It only changed to produced by hetfield and ulrich on this album for the first time.
An injustice was done to the justice, dude that is not just poetry that is sheer fucking brilliancy, I’m trying to write out my first album if not even an ep and bro 😎,Ned, If I use that phrase in a song ,the people that get the special thank you on the back of an album well ,Ned you’ll know the Ned im talking about is you bro thanks again , Good fucking shit ,

As Jason said in the video, it was an aesthetic choice. Not all music needs to sound the same. I'm currently reading the Enter Night biography and at the time, Lars was saying he wanted that dry sound.
I also heard somewhere else that their ears were shot from touring so much and it transpires in the mix.
Respect to Jason🙏🙏🙏
4:02 - singing the riff to "Wildflower" by The Cult.
Did the same thing to Kirk on St Anger (the James & Lars album), no solos (the live in studio DVD has solos). I like SA, but it has too loud of a snare & a flat bass tone. The remix St Anger song with regular snare or quiter snare is cool.
too right one the greatest songs ever
Jason is one of the best bass players i remember him very well in Flotsam and Jetsam wish he stayed with them even though his replacement was pretty damn good too
Never, ever let Lars near any mastering project. Or a drum kit for that matter.
THIS!!! Agree 1000% They should've fired the little cokehead & hired a real drummer.
I wonder if they could have used sidechaining to get the effect of the drums while still having the bass present.
Thankfully Kirk doesn’t have a big ego, IMO his solo on creeping death at 91 Russia concert is and always will be my favorite. I love James but he is a control freak, right before Kirk starts his Solo you can see James look to his left ( on any reaction video) and he doesn’t see Kirk and says “G.D. It, Kirky Go!!” Kirk is so layed back and passive and if he wasn’t imo he would be doing the same interview as Jason. Still my favorite band though lol.
This man is a legend to me
Bass makes Lars nervous . It means he has to keep time and we now know he’s sucks at that.
I am pretty sure I can hear Cliff's bass on Kill Em All and Master???
Newsted put his heart into the black album IMO. After that they sold out. Much love on ya Jason ❤️!!!!!
No ,they sold out on that album.
@@fayebyrd6440 I think they sold out making that video on Justice, or even putting fade to black and escape in Ride the Lightning. You guys are too worried about selling out. It's no big deal, some of their sellout albums are great

I love Jason for being such a chill dude and saying all this very forgiving stuff about his former bandmates over the years to keep the peace...but I still reckon he has a dartboard with a picture of Lars nailed to it somewhere in his house lmao
I’ve listened to the And Justice for Jason remix and personally I prefer the original. I think if it was mixed with more bass from the start it would have been great too but I’ve been listening to AJFA since I was 13 years old, right after it was released in ‘88 and frankly the production just doesn’t bother me like it does some. I’ve gotten used to it for one but I’ve always liked the way it sounds, even back then. It is what it is. And what it is is one of the greatest progressive metal albums of all time. I love AJFA just the way it is.
I know this is a bit of a hot take and i’m not trying to provoke anyone, especially fans of Jason. I love Jason as a musician and a person, plus he wrote the main riff for Blackened which is one of my favorite all time songs by any artist. I really do think it’s just a matter of getting used to the way it sounds after 30+ years but again I liked it from the start. There’s no other record that sounds like that one and it kind of makes it unique. And the songs are awesome
Just to quote and Justice for all.. "moving back instead of forward, seems to me absurd".. Love ya Jason
Go listen to "....And Jason for All" on RUclips. It's so good with the bass at levels to hear.
Sometimes the fact that you don't think you can hear it, means that it is doing it's job perfectly. Particularly where the bass doubles the rhythm guitar. You want it to make the sound fat and punchy, without being distinctly identifiable. Not hearing it can just mean that it is played very tight and mixed very well. Listen to a mix without the bass and you will realize that James guitar was not as fat as you thought it was.
You can hear it really well on Puppets in particular. How crappy would Orion or Leper Messiah sound without audible bass??
You both have a point
Definitely..the breakdowns in mostly the middle of each song are thick as a mofo.
I’ve seen interviews with James mentioning that Jason was following his guitar and he gave the impression that he didn’t like that.
I like Jason's analogy of the bass in AC/DC yea its simple but when you have Malcolm and Angus doing thier guitar parts Phil does his thing and Cliff just plays the simple chugging bass line it makes the music more better that is why AC/DC is still around they dont change the way they do shit they have thier formula and it works theh stick with it but even thoe I have my Nit picks with Metalica I still like them and enjoy thier music Jason was a good bass player and Rob is awsome to
And Justice For All was the Album after Cliffs death and the first album to future Jason Newsted as bassist.
During Blackened demoing
Lars: you are gonna be great in the studio, I can tell.
Jason: I'm really excited.
What happend with Metallica and the AJFA bass was right down to lack of communication between Lars and James to Jason.
Many people give crap on Lars for turning down the bass, and yes, it was a bad yet forgivable move since the thing about bass never really blew up until internet came around. BUT, Jason´s bass on the isolated track and the remixed "Justice for Jason" and all those bass boosted vertions immediatly make two things that made Lars choice more than understandable: 1) Jason doubled every note of James rhytms on bass one octave lower identical to a guitar (meaning pretty much played bass as a guitar) and AJFA had a lot of riffs with higer notes, and this was accentuated by: ; 2) Jason´s tone was not adecuate. It was too farty, not a bad tone, per say, but not the tone James and Lars wanted and definetly not the one the album needed.
At the end of the day Metallica has never been a bass band, and no, Cliff´s work on the first three albums never made the bass the main axe, except three songs and two of them just ocationally. Metallica has always been a Guitar band, even a lot of what Cliff wrotte for the band was written on a guitar... so there. However, that is not excuse for what happend with AJFA, but here you see (hear) Jason give an insight to four key elements that explain why it happend:
a) He recorded only with the sound engineere. Normally Lars and James where around for the recordings, even if not fully involved they where around the studio, however since Cliffs´passing they where a bit more abscent during the sessions and recording a new album without him was touchy, specially for James. Lars? who know what he was up to at the time, other than coke and a lot of extracurricular activities. Must be noted they never skip recrodings again.
b) He recorded the songs in three days... three pissing days. Again, the need of the band and the producer been present when things where happening so they could guide Jason through what they needed. In comparisson took weeks to record Jasons part on the black album, and we all know AJFA is a more complicated album to play but the thoughtfulness and care put into every note on the BA was far more obvious, wich leads to.
c) Jason was used to play in Flotsam and Jetsam and he was the main show. I like Doomsday for the deciever as much as the next thrash fan, but he was not in FJ anymore, he was not leading the band and this was not a band trying to make it in the minor scenarios anymore, Metallica simply sounded better. Jason style did not transalte as well, but again there was nobody around to tell him to try other stuff.
d) Lars was a douche lol. Impossible not to mention he did not like bass messing with his drums and this was Lars´s atempt to a magnuss oppus, but there was no one to tell Lars not to mess with the mix, not even James or Flemming.
At the end everything could be avoided and AJFA could have propper bass if James and Lars where present during the bass recordings, so they could tell Jason what they need from him, in this case not double James on bass (could use a second octaver lower for the higher notes) and have a proper tone for the album, after all they already had gone through that process in the transition between RTL and MOP where MOP, despise not having as many bass licks as lightning, had a much better tone.
Jason’s tone isn’t farty, it’s clanky. Cliff had a more farty tone since he loved to play with fuzz and distortion.
@@Kruegernator123 Whatever you call it, it wasn´t fit enough for the album
This man speaks the truth!! Although, with the bass doubling James, it was actually contributing to the power of the sound, even if not directly identifiable. If all the people whining about the bass being absent actually heard a mix without the bass at all, they would realize how much it really contributed, even if they could not clearly hear it.
@@brin57 I agree with that. Personally i think Jason doubling the high notes is not my taste, but in the final mix make sense. But yeah, if you drop the Bass in the álbum it's quite noticeable. And thank you
He did so good with Metallica after Cliff Burtons Tragic Death in 1986 good replacement and stayed in With Metallica from 1986 to 2001 for fourteen years. He recorded the Justin album in 1988 he wrote nine songs in total.
I can hear the bass all through that album.
It's pretty hard to accompany not one but two metal guitars constantly ripping 100 mph, unless you double up on them note for note with the bass, and I guess James and Lars just didn't want that
i love the album like it is, didnt know and different back when i started listening too Metallica after hearing TBA in 1991, AJFA would be a whole other album if remixed with Base today
I get what Jason is saying. By turning the bass down, lars and james said that to producers but on Justice seems like they forgot to turn it back up lol
This is one of the coolest and weirdest things I've ever heard....
I had decaf coffee yesterday, it was getting too late and I didn't want to not be able to sleep.
I wonder what cliff toughts on the toned down bass on the records
He was dead at the time.
Kirk, and Cliff's older Sister Connie, mentioned many times how Cliff talked a lot about wanting to start a band where he can play lead bass. He was probably going to do a solo project after the Damage inc. tour was done. So Cliff probably wasn't fond of his sound being mixed so low. Especially when his bass influences(Thin Lizzy, Rush, Black Sabbath) were mixed so high on their albums.
So I get what Jason is saying, butr AJFA was very different from Puppets and Lightning which makes me think it was more about Jason than he will admit. On those two records Cliff's bass is very noticeable in the mix. There is a freakin' killer bass intro on Leper Messiah! And the bass on Orion? Magnificent. So Jason's point falls a little flat for me. I literally cannot even listen to Justice. I NEED some bass in my music, man. I've got my And Justice For Jason fan mix and that is what I play when I need my AJFA fix.
In another interview with the mixer, it was actually revealed by him that it was actually Lars' and James' idea to turn down the bass where it is barely audible. They were just being dicks about Jason.
Flat Duo Jets - ha, great reference.
When I first heard Justice my only complaint to my mates was "where's the bass? its waaaaaay in the background?" So I bought my record & immediately remastered it correctly onto tape. Later bought the CD & remastered it again to digital, those are the masters I still listen to -- thats how bad the original mastering was! lol..
*Mix. Master determines clarity, not the level and effect of sound.
So what is the reason exactly? (just watched the video, and I still don't feel like I know) Thank you.
It’s just that hetfield and ulrich weren’t very keen on bass being prominent on Metallica records ever. My guess is that after cliff died, they just didn’t care anymore if the bass was heard or not. I think they were young and didn’t care too much about the producer’s opinions or Jason’s.
How's that Van Halen tribute tour going?
if I listen to this album now I listen to And Justice for Jason
I agree with Jason here it's ancient history and the album is a classic it set the bar at the time. For what metal was I was there. Jason understands as a lover of Music why he was cut out of the goddamn mix
Loved the album and trust me, back when it first came out nobody gave a shit about this topic.
I noticed it right away, and I kept asking everybody why it was not as sonically heavy as the first 2 albums.
@@wrallpaul66 it definitely sounds different than the others. Sounds basically like the Lars & JMZ show with a Kirk solo thrown in. Sounds like it was created in a lab.
I have a theory that Jason left, not because of the lack of bass on their albums or the EchoBrain thing, but from "Lars burnout." I bet Jason was home, relaxing after the Reload tour, and then Lars called him while eating a sandwich and Fritos into the phone, and Jason probably quit the next day.
🤣
He focking left the house!!! Period exclanation point 'hnggghh
He probably put the Fritos in the sandwich
I started a 2-piece Punk outfit in '96 called Big Hairy Snatch. No cursing, I wanted to keep it PG!😅 I played drums & sang & had a guitar player singer. Our big "hit" was called "Dig GG.(Allin) Up!" Wish I still had recordings.😔 & in '01 was planning on starting 1 with my gf who had a computer & a new thing called pro-tools, with her on guitar, me on bass & singing, & HAL tidying up the rest. That way we could tour & keep what little we made for ourselves. Right after we broke up, I saw The White Stripes on the cover of Blender Magazine for the 1st time. We weren't as good, of course, & know we weren't the 1st, but it was what it was, & is what it is, mofos! Just thought I'd share since I'm waiting here & bored as fuk! ...Oh yeah, Newstead's sister-in-law was a cool chick! Was 16 on a flight out of Phoenix to San Diego in '88, & she saw me reading a magazine with a pic of Jason in it & told me was her brother-in-law. Back then you could still smoke on planes, & she bought drinks & we partied all the way to the coast! Thanx again, wherever you are!!! 🍺🤗❤
🤘😎
he learned about bass recording the black album. Bob was very strict on what he should do.
I love all the people in the comments claiming this and that about Jason and the band like they know 100% and were there themselves.
I agree, I think that time Lars thought: "Jason is not our brother Cliff .. so now we can get rid of the bass"
Needs to have his bass turned up like Geezer Butler had done on "Black Sabbath - The End"
