About a decade after World War II, a group of juvenile delinquents are sent to the Shounan Special Reform School to deal with traumatic events they have endured. Together they have to learn what friendship means.
It's not exactly an anime about gangsters it's about prisoners. Not so popular I don't know why, but definitely a very good one that I highly recommend. Don't get baited by the title, as you said it's a dark and manly show with some emotional moments.
