Yeah, it's kinda in the name, Electric, Light (referring to the size of the orchestra as opposed to luminosity), Orchestra. All the sounds you see/hear live were there to begin with.
The strings have always been a big part of ELO's sound. They hit their peak during the disco era and the strings definitely helped them fit in and get a lot of airplay amidst all of that. Of course, Jeff Lynne's brilliant songwriting has always been their main draw. I hope you check out the album you were gifted. I think you'll really enjoy it. :)
Their name gives you an indication that orchestral sound was an integral part of their sound from the beginning Electric Light Orchestra. It’s why they are so popular. Just a perfect blend of orchestral, rock and blues.
I would always get excited when this song came on the radio when I was a kid. I still love this song to this day!!! I love Jeff Lynne's voice. ELO such a great band!!! What a treat, thank you Beth!!!
Beth that falsetto into a mix comes from one of Jeffs music Idol's Roy Orbison👍In my opinon i dint think ELO ever did a bad song they are Phenomenal check all there other hits, great channel. 🎸🎹🇺🇲👌😎
I'd venture their cover of Roll Over Beethoven is a complete dogs breakfast and entirely misses the point of 50's pop song. But other than that, they don't have a bad song.
The album's a perfect 10. It would be an 11 if Jeff had added just one more verse and one more round of chorus to, "Above The Clouds", a beautiful but far too short song.
Yes, always strings. This sounds so close to the original studio version. Love seeing all these old people in the audience singing along, wait a minute, that means I am old too! Oh well, we are a blessed generation to have grown up with such great music!
I love your reaction videos, Beth. You are an excellent singer, and it's great to see you embrace rock music. You are also a lovely, beautiful lady. Keep rockin', dear. You're the best...
Beth better late than never!!!! This is a good upbeat song!! Yes as I recall ELO always had strings.... One of the first to do it as a matter of routine. A great rock band!!!!!! It is real cool that so many where singing along with Jeff. Thank YOU!!!!!
What can you say, it's Jeff Lynne and ELO. IMO, ELO has the most songs that can get stuck in your head, this one included. Love how they use so many elements in their songs, especially the strings and cow bell. (More cow bell!) Their "Don't Bring Me Down" (my favorite of theirs), "All Around the World", and "Telephone Line" are ones to really get into. Another great song with strings is "Drops of Jupiter" by Train.
Beth, I was lucky enough to be at this concert at Wembley Stadium. It was the best concert I have seen, and the enjoyment from everyone and the band members was fantastic.
Jeff Lynne is an icon in the music industry. And I mean that in the truest sense of the word. He actually was involved in producing some Beatles tunes back in the day as I understand. He's a friggin musical genius really.
Strings are a signature part of ELO. Thank you for doing this reaction. I couldn't believe you'd never heard this, and then you realized that you had! They have so many great songs. I hope you do more reactions to them. Of course you have reacted to Traveling Wilburys, so you've reacted to Jeff Lynn there.
This is definitely a band I appreciated far more as I got older. I feel sort of foolish for not getting them when I was younger. Actually, a great band.
It was cool not to like ELO back in the day with many of my friends. Me, I really liked ELO, at least up to, and including A New World Record, but they lost me after that. Saw them live twice...on the Eldorado tour fiollowed by the Face The Music tour. The latter is probably my favourite album by them.
There was nobody like them...I saw them early to mid-seventies with the orchestral elements incorporated into the band. They mixed '50s rock 'n' roll with classical, disco, funk, etc. They had a bass player named Kelly Groucutt who shared vocals with Lynne and sang the falsetto parts on tour particularly on my favorite song, "Rockaria" which was a perfect blend of rock 'n' roll and opera/classical...definitely worth checking out.
ELO were very successful and rather unique. They had a string of top ten singles and albums in the UK. Jeff Lynne is a songwriter, singer, multi‐instrumentalist and successful music producer, and the driving force behind the band after Roy Wood left early on. He's written for, performed on and produced albums for Tom Petty, George Harrison, Roy Orbison and Paul McCartney amongst others. He co‐wrote, played, sang and co‐produced both Travelling Wilburys albums. Not a bad resumé by anybody's standards.
ELO has always had strings on the albums. You should give a listen to Livin' Thing Jeff Lynne's ELO Live with Rosie Langley and Amy Langley, Glastonbury 2016. The opening violin solo is amazing...
ELO are a musical happy place whatever your situation. This concert was in 2017 Jeff was 69!!!!! And still going strong. The varied age of the audience illustrates the enduring quality of the music and oh how much they are lovin it!
I guess you already heared Jeff Lynne- He was in the Traveling Wilburys too with Geroge Harrison, Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan and Tom Petty! Greets from Germany and have fun.
ELO got its name as they were Electric, and original line up features a "Light Orchestra" (basically a string quartet). A Feature they kept up to the album 'Time' The Album Discovery was nicknamed "Disco Very" by some of the band, but after Roy Wood left (the first album) there was certainly a dash of the danceable in some of their songs Peaking with Discovery.
RARELY a good idea to make a live version of a song your first listen. Live versions of pop/rock songs are almost always the band attempting (but nor quite succeeding) to recreate their studio sound... having said that, ELO's small string section. (which has ALWAYS been a part of the band, hence the "Orchestra" part of the name) has always done an amazing job recreating their sound on stage.
Their album Out of the Blue was the very first album I ever bought in 1977 when I was 14. It still hasn't gotten old. The strings are such an important part of their sound.
Jeff Lynn is brilliant in ELO but his producing and being Bffs with George Harrison was legendary, from Cloud 9 to Brain Washed to being a Traveling Wilbury.
Jeff Lynne was also a 'friend/collaborator/founder' on the Traveling Wilburys, with Roy Orbison, George Harrison, Tom Petty and Bob Dylan. He's such a great musical talent.
ELO absolutely always has strings! This is one of the best groups to have every graced the Earth! Congratulations Beth. You must listen to other classics of theirs. Living Thing is a superb song that I highly HIGHLY recommend! You will be in awe of their talent. Thank you Beth for finally listening to ELO. YAY!
That man has one of the best voices in the world in my opinion. It's just "perfectly pure" for lack of a better word(s). You need to listen to their albums.. The Strings have always been there! Gotta listen to "Telephone Line" - it transitions from a somewhat distorted voice on a phone to the PURE perfect voice of Lynne. Great music
Saw them in Adelaide, Football Park in 1978. It was the ‘Out Of The Blue’ tour. As a young teenager it was an earth shattering experience. Show was so futuristic, with the stage encaged in lasers. Simply stunning.
Saw them perform in Vancouver a few years ago. Utterly incredible!! I've listened to them since the 80's. Love them!!! If you have the opportunity to see them, DO IT!!! You will not be disappointed!🙂
Hi Beth. In the 70ths ELO Had two on Cello(Hugh McDowell and Melvyn Gale) and one on Violin (Mik Kaminski). And orchestera was conducted by Louis Clark. Thank you Beth for a fun and interesting Reaction video.
Jeff Lynne is a musical genius. E.L.O. is just one of many great bands from my home town of Birmingham. Others inc. Moody Blues, Black Sabbath, U.B.40, Spencer Davis Group and many more.
Probably what set them apart as a unique rock band when they first came out was that they had actual band members playing the strings, both in the studio and in concert.
I was in school when this was in the charts, Myself and a mate Chris would sit at the back of maths class belting this out coz we were so interested in maths haha, great memories....
I bought tickets to see Deep Purple in 1972. $15 for the tickets. There were two opening acts: ELF, ELO, and Deep Purple. Elf introduced me to Ronnie James Dio. Electric Light Orchestra was on tour to promote its first album. That was the first time I ever saw a cellist and a violinist playing rock & roll. They were spinning their instruments and dancing about the stage with them.
@@Cosmo-Kramer Yes...ELO was promoting its first album. Because I saw them at the beginning, and I recognized their great energy and talent, I became a lifetime fan. Being a great fan of Jeff Lynne, I see him in concert whenever I can...the last time being either 2018 or 2019. just before Covid.
Jeff Lynne is a legend with in his own right. You have to check out the song. Telephone line 📞 live in Wembley is so beautiful even the crowd is beautiful to see in a dream like state.

Beth: I enjoy your videos ! have you ever reacted to anything by the Traveling Wilburys? Every song on their two albums are awesome. The band is Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, George Harrison, Bob Dylan and Jeff Lynne and I forgot who their drummer was. Talk about a supergroup!
Thanks you for another awesome reaction!! The one song you must not miss is "Roll Over Beethoven" - the best cover ever of the great Chuck Berry classic! Live is best!!
Always had the strings, on records and on tour. I remember seeing them in the late 70s, they had the strings who danced a bit on the stage with the string instruments. At one point they did Rimsky Korsakov's Flight of the Bumblebee while shotting a green laser doing patterns on a white cello. They also had a big spaceship in the ceiling. Not near as chill as this and it was fantastic.
Re the strings, the clue's in the name of the band. You definitiely need to listen to more ELO, especially live. Jeff Lynn is a genius and the entire band are brilliant.
Jeff Lynne, called the fifth Beatle at times for his song writing skills and use of classical instruments. He was also the organizer and member of the supergroup The Traveling Wilburys. You can hear his ornamentations through each album. ELO had such rich melodies with jeffs use of classical theory. It really made listening very enjoyable. His solid, almost flat , neutral singing made his voice the point of balance for the complex instrumentation and in turn his voice pops dispite its straight forward placement. Thanks for reacting to these classics.
I always get a Beatles (especially a George Harrison) vibe when I hear Jeff sing and the way he structures his songs. Maybe it's just me who feels that way.
probably one of the best bands of all time certainly up there with Queen.. and Mr. Blue Sky has been scientificlly proven as the "Happiest song of all time "... should do more !!!
They always had the strings…. and the synths…. And the best acoustic guitars… And Jeff Lynne they have Jeff Lynne.
Very much a musicians musician, and a funny bloke...
Yeah, it's kinda in the name, Electric, Light (referring to the size of the orchestra as opposed to luminosity), Orchestra. All the sounds you see/hear live were there to begin with.

Thanks for stating that. Yes, the band always had incredible sound, and a big part was from the string instruments. Full orchestra.
The name Electric Light *Orchestra* was no random choice. 😉 I always found their fusion of sounds so unique and appealing.
An Orchestra with strings, who’d have thunk it.

Definitely his best song.
'A New World Record' is essential listening.

Jeff is an amazing talent. Brilliant producer, songwriter and performer
Jeff Lynne is a gift to every music lover. He had a vision, and he's seeing it through in perfect form.

"Orchestra" is in the name for a reason.

"Rockaria", is a vastly underrated ELO gem. It's such a great concept lyrically, and it features Jeff's "'50s rocker" vocals at their absolute best.

Respectfully disagree, brother. I think it's better at this concert, Wembley '17. Not just her intro, but the band's whole performance.

Many excellent tracks (and I deny any bias from being at university in Birmingham in the 79s)...

Strings, yes, synths, yes, even an opera singer on the iconic track 'Rockaria'.
