The Battle of the Teutoburg Forest, described as the Varus Disaster or Varian Disaster (Latin: Clades Variana) by Roman historians, was a major battle between Germanic tribes and the Roman Empire that took place somewhere near modern Kalkriese from September 8-11, CE 9, when an alliance of Germanic peoples ambushed three Roman legions led by Publius Quinctilius Varus and their auxiliaries. The alliance was led by Arminius, a Germanic officer of Varus's auxilia. Arminius had acquired Roman citizenship and had received a Roman military education, which enabled him to deceive the Roman commander methodically and anticipate the Roman army's tactical responses. Teutoburg Forest is commonly seen as one of the most important defeats in Roman history, bringing the triumphant period of expansion under Augustus to an abrupt end. The outcome of this battle dissuaded the Romans from their ambition of conquering Germania, and is thus considered one of the most important events in European history. The provinces of Germania Superior and Germania Inferior, sometimes collectively referred to as Roman Germania, were established in northeast Roman Gaul, while territories beyond the Rhine remained independent of Roman control. Retaliatory campaigns were commanded by Tiberius and Germanicus and enjoyed success, but the Rhine became the border between the Roman Empire and the rest of Germania. The Roman Empire launched no other major incursion into Germania until Marcus Aurelius (r. 161-180) during the Marcomannic Wars. Some of the descendants of the vassal kingdoms, like the Suebi (by suzerainty), that Augustus tried to create in Germania to expand the romanitas and the Empire were the ones that invaded Rome in the fourth and fifth centuries
Found this off quora about how the attack took place. "STEP ONE German fighters attacked the rear column. Those in the front knew nothing. They just kept walking. STEP TWO German fighters attacked the front. Those in the middle knew nothing. STEP THREE German fighters attacked the middle of the column from both sides. The Romans were trapped. They did not understand what was happening here. The Roman legion was powerless because it had been drawn out in a long line. To make matters worse, it was raining. The Roman equipment became heavy in the rain. The German equipment was light and not affected by the rain. The German victory was total. The Roman defeat was total. Very few Roman soldiers survived to tell the story to the world." pretty much a massacre for them
this song is so epic it sounds like somthing sabaton would actually make and the fact that it was made by AI makes me amazed and terrified at the same time
I don't think the Romans had any chance of winning the battle. There were too many variables against them. Not only did Arminius train the Germanic tribes in the Roman's tactical responses, but the treacherous muddy terrain made it near impossible for them to establish defencive positions because their shields would get stuck in the thick mud. Plus, they were not used to fighting in that sort of terrain so the Germanic tribes could easily ambush them.
There was a book I purchased about a year ago published by pen and sword books here in the UK,it's the first proper military biography of Varus. It's worth getting. You may get a second hand one on amazon,a new one cost me 22 British pounds including postage. Publius Quinctilius Gary's-the man who lost three Roman legions in the Teutonburg disaster is the full title by J.Ball. As a Scotsman and historian (military-by and large you don't make much as a military historian btw, though I've started my first book) I just think it's awesome that the empire(despite temporary incursions)ultimately was stopped by the Northern Britons(no Scots back then) and the Germanic (and other cultures)at fairly near the same latitude. To be fair,I doubt there was much profit in conquering either North Britain or Germania. Rome liked war to pay for itself.
In Germany we have a hole monument build vor Armenius, its from the Kaiserzeit and stylist him as Hermann der Etrusker. It stands in Detmold and is basicaly or statue of Liberty.
