  • First day of this 4 day van trip to the incredibly beautiful Northumberland sees us walking along the 2000 year old Hadrian's Wall to Sycamore Gap to see the tree stump. This is essentially a holiday for the Finnmeister, but we've tried to include some interesting walks and history along the way. Succeeded?

I was at Sycamore Gap a few days ago. Still a magical place. I did the wall with my son last year, best thing we’ve done. I’d do it again but from east to west this time. Top tip, the bus from Newcastle to Carlisle or the other way round only costs £2. It was more expensive to get the metro from Wallsend into Newcastle. Anyway, I’m looking forward to next week.

I walked on Hadrian's Wall with my husband and his mom in 1971 on a trip to England, Scotland and Wales. I was so excited to see that lovely wall again that I jumped for joy in my spirit. Brought back memories of that trip of a lifetime. I do not remember all of that grass growing on top of the wall then but then memories can be flawed. When we walked on top of the wall, there were no other buildings and I don't recall IF excavations of the area (we were near a mile fort, too) were happening when we were there but for the two hours we spent on and near Hadrian's Wall, we were the ONLY people walking the wall. There may have been spirits where we were because I remember hearing strange sounds floating on the air. BTW I love history too as did my first husband and I taught it for over 22 years. Also saw a Roman Well (still had water in it) in the basement of an Estates Office in either Exeter or Chester, probably Chester. Walked the wall around Chester too. 😎

I so relate to the feeling of dread leading up to trips or events. I chalked it up to grief response from recently losing someone extremely close to cancer. I am determined not to let that feeling stop me though. It’s just a feeling. I so appreciate your waffling wanders

There's something oddly captivating about watching someone navigate a gate it's like a peaceful little ritual. The gentle rhythm of going in and out, almost like a meditation in motion. Who knew such a simple act could bring such calm and quiet joy? It's the kind of entertainment that reminds you to appreciate life's small, unnoticed moments. F*** that gate hater!

As you're thinking of walking the Hadrian's Wall Path, I would recommend you buy the pocket sized Cicerone book 'Walking Hadrian's Wall Path', by Mark Richards. Not only does it provide a guide to walk east to west as well as the west to east route taken by most people, you also get a 1:25,000 scale route map booklet. The book also provides lots of interesting snippets as you make your way.

That Beadnell campsite always reminds me of an old friend who's parents used to go there in their campervan. He used to tell the story of how one of them once drove off in the van there, forgetting they'd attached the awning to it and set up their living/kitchen area under it! Total mayhem.

The Sycamore gap tree wasn't the only Great Tree to be felled another one got taken down just days after, there was an amazing tree that was about a thousand years old it was an ancient yew tree, why do people such horrible things it's like an attack on nature history and beauty...

Ii remember the campsite at Beadnell from the late 80's when I camped at the entrance road. It was a very small site then. Obviously more vans than tents now. I took a trip out to the Farne islands and also walked to Sycamore Gap from the west. I went back about 5 years ago. It's changed a lot. Much busier, but still had a great time.

Great video Glenn, I’m really enjoying seeing you “expand your horizons”. Seeing different parts of the UK while enjoying your special brand of waffle is an absolute joy.
When I was in the UK last year I hired a car in Glasgow and drove to Carlisle. My first full day in England was spent at Sycamore Gap…. Just 6 days later I was in my accommodation at Windermere crying, watching the news reports that the tree had been cut down. I shed a tear now, seeing the reality of the empty gap in your video. I’m so lucky to have seen it when I did. And under skies as blue as they were for you 😊
Looking forward to seeing what other great adventures you have in store for us.

Stopped at Beadnell Bay Campsite about 2 weeks (17-19 September) ago....in my tent 2 nights. We had the full harvest moon then. Did the Coastal (or as the signs say, the English Coastal Path) walk to High Newton by the Sea...Nice pint or two in the Joiners Arms....then onto Low Newton....back along coastal path.....Beadnell is good for wind surfers...although on the video the bay looked like a mill pond.....
Some fabulous houses overlooking the sea at Beadnell. Nice pub in Beadnell, the Craster Arms, good food and a beer.
We were very lucky with rhe weather, baking hot on the walk.
Wee dog, Finn, was like a puppy on the beach. Lovely to see.
