I like that he plays clean first, to get a feel for the actual tone of the guitar, before he switches on the dirt. Very nice.

Great demo and video...I had a Gold Top L7, and it was wonderful. The reason I no longer have it?...the weight. That's it. I loved the guitar...the way it felt, played, sounded, looked...just - for me - too heavy. Seated, no problem, but wearing the thing...was a deal breaker...wish I still had it, but ...and I've read comparisons to the Epiphone Les Paul's...not even close. The Sire/Larry Carlton single cutaway blows the Epi out of the water in every aspect. I was a guitar Inspector at Epiphone and handled a hundred guitars a day, so I can speak from experience...no contest.

I came to see the guitar review. But I ended up listening to his play over and over and thought about why I started playing this instrument in the first place. Thank you very much for the wonderful demo. I will listen to this probably million more times.

Just discovered the Sire brand and the L7 a day ago 5.15.24. Was inspired to know that Larry was involved with the company lending his ideas. The more I listen to good players demo this guitar I feel Carlton/Sire somehow whether knowingly or not came up with a guitar that sounds like both a Les Paul and a 335. Alchemy?
    Really soulful playing Jon.

Just received my Black L7. It's a gem! The neck pick-up is the warmer pick-up I ever try and listen to. Don't bother with the weight if you play sitted , moreover thanks to the weight I have never had as much sustain…
Thank you thousand times Jon, you're the one who makes me the jump. (BTW I love so much your solo that I transcribe it, it is the first thing I have played on my new darling!)

I just got one of these, and agree with the review. The brightness can be tamed with top wrapping, though, and adjusting the pole pieces on the pickups. Mine is actually pretty light, so I guess this can vary from guitar to guitar. I like it very much, and I've had a few Gibsons as well. This is like how you would adjust a Gibson in the mix with other instruments, taming the low mids a bit.

I wanted to get an Edwards LP ( a friend has the white LP Custom model from them) but sadly Edwards discontinued the entire LP line recently and the remaining models have gone up in price over here in the EU like crazy. ( some online shops sell them new for almost 1,500 Euros! )
So, I looked for alternatives and the Sire models were recommended to me. I really like the satin neck, rolled off fretboard and that shaved-off neck joint like on the ESP/LTD Eclipse models.
Not sure about the pickups though, they do sound pretty bright for PAF's.
Thomann has the L7 in stock atm, for less then 600 Euros.
I'm really tempted to get this black one, put a chrome scratchplate and maybe some Duncan JB/59's on it & turn it into a John Sykes Black Beauty ''tribute''. Or maybe get the gold top model, which is a little bit cheaper.

  • @Anjohl

These are fantastic guitars, the only thing I would warn a prospective buyer of is that the pickups are *not* generic PAF clones. They have their own character, voiced by Larry Carlton himself. I find they are a fair bit brighter than typical PAF-style pickups. The other thing to point out is that the pots are only *ok*. Obviously, this is a cheap upgrade, but I felt the pots were the one area that they let me down.
Saying that, I feel the guitar punches with those double, and maybe even triple the cost. The neck is just *magnificent*. The profile is slim without being a chore, the Ebony fretboard is superb, and the rolled fingerboard edges are a feature normally only seen on guitars 4-5 times the price. The big takeaway from mine is how *playable* it is. After taking it home, and living with it for a week or so, I commented to the salesman who sold it to me the next time I was at the shop that it was like the neck "disappeared" once I dug in on it. I also just discovered that all three pickup positions have their own voice, and are *very* useable. I almost *never* use the middle position on two-pickup guitars, but the middle on the L7 is wonderful!
Also, the taper on the pots is "good enough". That is the one thing I could see changing in the future, and maybe the knobs. Wonderful guitars tho, well worth trying out if you are looking at the higher end Epiphones or low to mid prices Gibsons even! I wonder if this would A/B more similarly with a higher end Gretsch Jet than a Gibson Les Paul. Just thinking out loud here!

I wish they had a more basic L-3 counterpart to L-7 the way they do with S-7 & T-7. Maybe they do by now (April '23) or will at some point. Just put on two knobs and a single hard bridge, standard tuners. Give it a pretty nice finish, offer a few colors. Doesn't need coil splits. I'd like one of those. But I'd certainly like an L-7 in lieu of. This is from an Epi fan with two LPs and three Specials (one with P90s). Love 'em all but Sire is now selling guitars I want more than another Epiphone.

  • @Barbarapape
    @Barbarapape 2 года назад +1

Another highly desirable guitar from Sire's Larry Carlton series, the pickups sound very sweet and at least the top end is not harsh
so the tone control should take care of the brightness.
As much as i like guitars in Black with Gold hardware, i have found out the hard way that they don't stay looking good for long.
In a different colour with chrome or nickel hardware i might be tempted, i don't have any single cut guitars.
Thanks for your melodic demo Jonathan, it gave me a soothing end to my long day.🙂

    Hi Jon,
Between Sire L7 and Cort CR300, which one would you reccomend. CR300 is almost 100 British pounds cheaper too. All things considered, which one would you recommend to buy

Gotcha!. Thanks. Does the SIre humbucker trump the EMG RetroActive Fat 55 .
PS (I already bought the Sire Larry Carlton H7 because of your recco).
      Thanks again

The Sire is around 1.5 the cost, but if that's not an issue, I would choose the Sire. If you have access, I might try a Gibson Les Paul Tribute against the Sire. Less features, but a really high quality guitar as well, and much lighter due to their modern weight relief!
