I love Musicians Friend. Been getting from them for decades. Here’s an ordering tip. Whenever you talk to someone to make an order ask if they have it in their warehouse and tell them you do not want it to come from a Guitar Center. Sometimes they will send an open box or they will pull a store demo to give you if they are running low on that item.
The problem is their idea of new and my idea of new are two different things. They tried to sell me a Spark cab with no box, manual or SC cable as new. They argued with me that it was new. 😂 I don’t do business with them. If I want used/returned gear I’ll go to Reverb and get a better price.
Hey, I got that $19.99 drum set alarm clock 5:39 for Christmas back in the mid 90’s from my grandparents. I sure miss them. Thanks for the memories, Masters of Shred.
Hey just wanted to say I love your channel and this was a great episode!!!! For many of us watching this I'm sure they can relate this was our "Bible"😊
@@JohnnyLane1974 Hey man! Thank you so much for the kind words! Happy to hear you are enjoying the new series! 🙏🙌 We just shot a new episode yesterday that I think you are going to really enjoy! Stay tuned 🎸🎸🎸
Thanks so much for the kind words! So happy you enjoyed it! 🙏🎸🎸 We have another one with Rob on the way that I think you will enjoy even more! Stay tuned!! 🎸🎸
Wow! Highly informative! These episodes have been great lately and the guests are not only full of knowledge but are the ACTUAL people in the shred den explaining things. Love to see it! Btw, we got the grilled cheese distortion for Christmas and it was hot as fook! That thing was fuzz cheese grater central!
Great video as always! I always looked forward to getting these catalogs in the mail and watching you go through one with someone who was involved was fantastic. Keep up the great work. ✌🏻
This was awesome to have Rob to go through it to get the inside scoop. I’ve always wondered this stuff and to finally hear him give this behind the scenes info is awesome
The RG570 from Ibanez had the original Wizard neck at 17mm which was amazing and yes they were built in Japan this was "Golden Age" Ibby. I have an RG560 which is an HSS version and a bit more rare. The Premium ibbys have great features but thicker necks. They DON'T have the 17mm profile neck, it's the 19mm profile.
In 2000 it was called a "super wizard" neck. They did that on many MiJ models between 1999 and 2002 roughly. I have one. Super thin and my favorite ibanez neck❤
I have a musicians friend black and white catalog from 1990. First year of MIJ Jackson Professional Rhoads was $1,219 with hardshell case. USA Jackson RR1 Rhoads was only $150 more at $1,369. Seriously. 1990 catalog with Vinnie Moore on the cover. Amazing. Ordered my first Crybaby wah for $59 out of there. Should have picked up a few RR1'S TOO😢😢😢
Thats true. The first wave of really nice mij Jackson Professionals were basically the same price as usa jacksons. The quality of those mij professionals between 1990 and 1994 were better quality control too.
I bought a Kelly Star last year. I have the exact one in that magazine It's like a purplish blue flame. Such a badass guitar it's all original It has no back cover but I want to change the Jackson Floyd and the Chrome is hideous. Such a badass guitar with that reverse headstock pointy AF. I may end up selling it for a couple thousand I only paid $800 for it and it's in mint condition but it needs a different tremolo. I may keep it because I play in a metal band called BattleMace. Great show Keep up the good work 🤘
Those trems back then were branded ones right? LIke they said Jackson or Washburn on em. Not actually Floyd rose brands back then. Crazy how far guitar building has come since those meek times when it comes to imports.
I still remember my time working extra hours in a music store during what I see as the "dark period" for guitars. It was a challenging era - guitar heroes had faded from the spotlight, replaced by a focus on digital recording equipment. At the same time, brands like Gibson and Fender were raising prices on signature models tied to artists who, frankly, didn’t hold much significance for most players. Selling a Richie Sambora signature guitar, for instance, was harder than giving away a secondhand PA system! This disconnect made it increasingly difficult for us to sell guitars, as they felt more like overpriced collector’s items than tools for musicians. In my opinion, this marked the beginning of the decline for Gibson and Fender. For Gibson, it would take a bankruptcy and many years of rebuilding before they started finding their way back to what truly made them iconic.
I apologize for comment #2. The more I watch these videos of vintage guitars, interviews, magazines, etc....the more I realize how LITTLE I know. I guess that's why we should be thankful for RUclips channels like this.
The Tesi switch is an excellent mod for any guitar.I have one on a Flying V build and it really adds a new dimension to the sound. I find it hard to stop using it to the point of excess, haha.
I used to look forward to my catalogs coming in the mail! They were great back then and yeah perfect to read in the bathroom😅 The catalogs kept me up with all newer gear like the internet does these days but I kind of miss the catalogs.
I paid 20 bucks at pawn shop for one of those Arion Hot Watt II headphone amps. it kind of passed as a practice amp, and it was better than the crate monitor I had at the time. Made a walkman loud as hell. I had some decent Pioneer over ear headphones.
With Inflation Calculated, the same LP Goldtop would cost you today 5669.82 Dollars. It's not that easy to compare prices from 20 years ago. You also have to take into account 1. Rising Prices and Costs for Ressources, Labor, Inflation but 2. the wages have also increased and 3. Build Quality has massively increased, at least in the lower and middle tier but also today you can buy extremely good Guitars for even less money then some of the examples. 4. CNC The Introduction of CNC gives us Guitars with extremely little quality deviations 5. Again, especially in the low and midrange tier today the Manufacturers use much better wood, prices for tuners have fallen drastically from 50 to now only 8 bucks which again, lowers the prices of the endproducts unless you really want a Custom Built Guitar. Better buy a good, affordable base Guitar and then modifiy it yourself until you like what you have, like Eddie did back in the 70's.
I remember when a Gibson Les Paul Custom was $2,499 in Y2K. It wasn't cheap back then, but it was still attainable for the average Joe. Nowadays the prices are ludicrous. Inflation has very little to do with it. Corporate greed is what it is. 😢
Some guitars havent changed prices at all, I remember getting a cheap squier deluxe tele for 200-250 in the 2000s and you can still get the same guitar for around the same price. Some guitars have definitely changed in price. For God sakes, Musicians Friends didnt even have a single jazzmaster for sale when I was growing up, not even a squier.
I'm from Colombia and in the middle of 90's and end of 2010 and in between, musicians friends was my bible to buy my stuffs. Now is sweetwater. The bussines model evolve.
In that catalog from 2000 they have a R8 or 1958 Re-issue Les Paul listed at $3,349 which is high and today they cost $5,200! Ouch! The R9 or1959 is even more at $6,669! add another $500 for the Murphy lab version. All i know is i paid $700 for a made to order Charvel super strat back in 1982 and that was a LOT of money! that guitar is now worth over $10K but sadly i parted with it like a fool years ago! 😞
Of course if you go to Sell thinking you will get High Retail Value, think again as market has a Glut of Instruments and if you bought Lower end of Brand it probably isnt going to climb in value at all and be lucky to recover 50% or more of what you spent if honest. So many of those claiming I won't take a Penny Less, Will take less when it comes time to pay bills or starve
I watched that Gibson Vampire Blood 2 times on the german Ebay Site and the are "cheap" here. You can get them for under 1600$. But I didnt like the (imo) "cheesy" inlays and the look. so they are not for me. But if you sold the Guitar for 1500$ back in the day, you made a good deal. At least from our european perspective ;)

Wow I remember this exact musicians friend!! Awesome to go back through this again. Amazing nostalgia.
I _always_ wondered about the ‘call for price’ reasoning. Glad to have that finally explained why
I forgot all about this lol. I assumed it was soo expensive that nobody would even care what the price was, but I was wrong it seems.
@ I know! I thought this too!! Sucks to find out 20 years later we probably missed out on some smoking deals 😳
I _love_ this series. Hope to see more!!
As usual, great video!

I bought a Kramer Focus while helping a friend flip a house down south. It's actually a pretty good guitar.
Great video!
