  • Mac mini M2 PRO vs M2 vs M1 | Pro Photo & FCP Tests! What is the best configuration? This test will look at many of the new Mac mini with M2 PRO, M2 and compare these machines with the previous generation M1that gave a really impressive performance compared to intel macs of the past. You'll see a comparison between all of these machines, which will give you a good idea of how each performs. Each of the graphs will go over various workflow and needs. At the end I'll go over should you upgrade if you already have the M1? To which Mac mini, M2 or M2 Pro or Mac Studio. And if you are buying one now, what is the best configuration that you can customize to get the most performance out of your mac. These tests includes Lightroom Classic, Lightroom, Capture One, Photoshop, and light Final Cut Pro work.

    Art, thank you for this analysis, it is the one I've been waiting for, and I also appreciate some of the comments other have made here. I am trying to decide between an M2 Pro VS an M1 Max Studio as the price is so close, and I go back and forth every day with each review I have seen. The performance advantage depends upon workflow and I do more photography than video, but I am concerned about future proofing also.
    The M2 Pro is very capable, but I'm a little concerned about the potential heating. The Studio's cooling system is stronger and the I/O is quicker, but it is also 1 generation older. 30 years of buying Macs and it is always amazing to have such choices to struggle with! I look forward to your direct comparison between the Studio Max and the M2 Pro. Thanks for all your work.

    Wow, quite impressive and useful review. Thank you very much. I considered to upgrade my current M1 MM 16/512 to M2 Pro MM 32/512 theoretically, but now I see the clear profit of this. I usually do exactly those things mentioned in the video. One of them - panorama stitching. I do it in Photoshop with its Photomerge. And here is the catch. Stitching a 1-row set of photos is not a big deal today. I shoot with Canon EOS R with 30 MP sensor. I tried to make multi row panoramas with a telephoto lens to get most from it. Shooting source material for such kind of panoramas is a pretty big challenge itself because you have to have a special tripod head for this and be able to manage it (it’s not about an expensive automated head). Having full size JPEGs converted from RAWs, let’s say, up to 45 images, I try to stitch that panorama in Photoshop and it gives up halfway on alignment step probably because of RAM is over. The same time PTGui app does it much faster and effortlessly, but this software is so expensive for an amator stitcher like me. Thus it’s really very interesting moment if M2 Pro MM 32/512 will manage this task.
    And one more question. How hot was M2 Pro MM according to iStats readings compared to M1 MM - CPU temperature, fan RPM? Was the fan ever audible under heavy load?

    • @ArtIsRight
      @ArtIsRight  Год назад

      No audibly loud on M2 PRO and this is dependent on the environment as well.

    Thanks again for doing this Art. Super detailed comparison, especially with the new test versions.
    Been hovering between deciding on the Mac Mini and the Macbook pro 16". Both options would be linked to an external monitor. The laptop would be nice for just being more mobile, the downside would be battery degrading over time. Whereas the mac mini would probably be a cheaper alternative without the mobility.

    • @ArtIsRight
      @ArtIsRight  Год назад +2

      I hear you, but your car tires degrade over time as well, it is just a consumable component in the machine. For many by the time it degrade it is time to upgrade the machine anyways. So what I would do is consider your need, do you need mobility, if so then there's no choice other than laptop. But if mobility is a wishful thinking that it may happen, what I have found is that most of the time, that laptop would just sit on the desk permanently or at least 98% of it life, to which, in this situation you are better off with the mini desktop

    Great comparison, gives a good sense of what to expect in real world usage. Only other config I wish you had is the 32-core GPU M1 Max, but we can probably guess how it might scale based on your results.

    I was on the fence about the M2 vs Pro, think after seeing this video I'll go with the M2 upgraded to 16GB, and when I need extra storage just invest in a fast TB or 2 external SSD. For how I use computers seems like it would be plenty of juice for my use.
    Thanks for a clear, and very thorough overview.

      The issue I have is that a 16/512 M2 only has 2 thunderbolt ports. The base 16/512 M2 Pro has 4. That's a deal-breaker for me and worth the extra $200 between the two configurations.

      @@TheWesterosiNinja If I'm not mistaken, I believe that the HDMI on the M2 mini is HDMI 2.0 and the Pro has a HDMI 2.1 connection.

    Thanks for the analysis, that was definitely eye opening. As a C1 user, I spotted a small mistake though in the numbers at 23:50. The difference between 38 and 52 min is not 24%, it's more like 35% or something like that.

    Great review. I would like to see virtualization being added to the mix such as Parallels with Windows 11. My current thought process is to have MacOS run natively with Win11 in Parallels. This would tip in favor of 32gb and faster SSD aka the Studio.

    For C1 Pro you should consider testing .CR3 and .ARW files as well. It might indicate which types are better optimized.

      I see your point, however, the scaling issue in software would still persist, it is code base not file type optimization issue. And yes each file time would produced different timing.

      To a point, but this is all calculated already in the creation of the machine and chip. So technically hotter or not, everything is run within Apple engineered specified envelop.

    Hi Art.. this is a new subscriber comment. I learned more in this video and your excellent presentation than I have learned from countless other videos on the same topic here on RUclips. I really have to commend you for the way that you consider the viewer and you help show and explain what could be very complex knowledge to us in layman's terms. Thank you so much for the time you spend doing this. I would like to ask if you could do a video on the best monitors to use with the Mac studio. I'm having a hard time figuring that out! Thanks again for all you do maybe you should change the name of your channel from Art is Right to Art is Great lol!

      Much appreciated! I'll also take Art Is the Best but I digress. For Mac Studio, if you are a creative I would recommend BenQ PD or SW display line. PD is more for designer / content creators. SW has hardware calibration capability and is really designed for photography workflow. If you want a fun display I would look at BenQ Mobiuz as well, the one that I am using now is EX3210U, 4K 144Hz 99% Adobe RGB. It is great!
