I’ve just completed my first placement in an emergency surgical ward it was brilliant I seen so much, I love how you explain things, placement is brilliant and when I learn a lot, thank you for providing information as it can be daunting at times especially when you start xx
@@ClaireCarmichaelI came in today for a lecture and as I walked in I saw a familiar face on a massive banner. I thought, I know that face from somewhere. Then saw your name and realised it’s you! So cool x
It's amazing how many different things you can do as a nurse! That's one of the things I love about nursing. I was wondering, when you do last offices do you give the patient anything like a flower or a home made blanket? On my ward we don't do anything like that, we just wash the patient, put them in a shroud and wrap them in a sheet and some of us wish we could do something a bit more personal and dignified. I know other hospitals have different procedures. Thank you for talking about last offices because it scares a lot of people but it's all part of nursing - cradle to grave - and in a dignified and compassionate way.
Gwen Owen exactly that Gwen! I did talk a lot more about the last offices but I actually cut it out because I didn’t want to upset anyone. We do exactly what you do as well. You’re right a flower or something would be lovely wouldn’t it? :) I think different cultures do different things too. It depends on the person maybe? X
fleur wheeler They are! 🙈 Most trusts are in Birmingham. As long as it’s off the collar they don’t mind :) Funny story, I had just finished a skills session at uni... we have to wear uniform then. And I had took my hair out to let it lose for the way home. One of the lecturers saw it and went to put it up 🙈 I thought she was leaning in for a big hug so I hugged her 🤣 wasn’t awkward at all... 🙈🤣 I must of needed a hug haha. Did make us laugh though. You’ll be alright! You’re going to be on the new curriculum which is exciting! I’ve not actually heard what changes they’ve made to the course yet. But I have heard you’ll be taught to do bloods and IVs 🤔 but again, I’m not 100% certain so don’t quote me on this. I’d like to find out more then maybe do a Vlog about it :) x
Claire Carmichael ahh love a good awkward moment like that 😂 I’m pretty sure the new guidelines do want the new nursing students to do IVs and take blood (something I’m dreading and looking forward to too) and the number of hours we need to do on placement has gone up to 3500 hours now 😅😂
I don't know how you both enjoy it so much! Dentures and anything eye related are the two things I struggle with. And shaving men really scares me but I know a lot of people love it.
lion Roar People do drop out you’re right. But for all different reasons. Not purely a placement. It also depends on you as a person and how you view things?
Hi there could you please give me some ideas for student nurse led innovative improvement projects. We have an assignment on it. An example could be music therapy for dementia.
Hi Claire, you mention that during your first placement you dressed wounds. Were you able to observe this practice before applying it in practice? Thankyou
Hi, I have been looking into nursing and was wondering about vaccinations and the health clearance you need are you required to be vaccinated to be a nurse ?
My Name is Naomi. I have apply nursing course at Wolverhampton University in september and i do not what do am very confused can you please advice me should i do .thank you
G-G Cool yay go you!!! It depends what those commitments are but no you can’t really pick and chose what days you do :( but you can ask and they can accommodate I’m sure ☺️ xx
Natasha Hewlett I’m not sure to be honest? I think the theory behind it is that they are smooth and can easily be wiped where as diamonds have rough bits that can harbour bacteria? 🤔 lol! But then unless you’re going to take the wedding band off and wash it out every time you wash your hands, surely bacteria can still harbour under it? Thank you Natasha :) 🌻✨
You don’t get holidays like normal university. You get allocate a set amount of holiday over the year. It depends what university does what… I started in January and had Easter and Christmas off :)
Hi Claire, I’m a new student at BCU as well, I am currently on my first placement and I am really struggling not just academically but clinically. Is there anyway you could put me through please?
Morning! Aw sorry to hear this. What is it you’re struggling with? Also first year, first placement is always tough! So please don’t beat yourself up about it. You’re not expected to know much, it’s the start of your learning 🥰 What do you mean ‘put me through?’ What? 🙈 x
Hello, please I want to ask this question My assessor is so tormenting so I have decided not to work with her and I have beg another sister to help me signed my placement document. I just want to ask if this is going to affect me negatively and secondly at there end of my placement how are they going to sign me off. Is my university going to send out any documents for them to sign me off or are my going to leave just like that Thank you
It shouldn’t affect you being signed off? I’m sorry you’ve had that. Please report this though and get another official mentor in place for you. The NMC did change the guidelines on mentors, so as long as you have a nominated practice assessor you sign you off :) the other competencies in your documents anyone can sign for you if they’ve seen you do a skill. This NMC link might help: www.nmc.org.uk/globalassets/sitedocuments/standards-of-proficiency/standards-for-student-supervision-and-assessment/student-supervision-assessment.pdf Any worries please contact your uni team for support :( xx
Or better still get your placement cancelled and given to another year group, so we might have to do our placements during the summer. Not fun when you're looking forward to the placement and it gets taken away
@@ClaireCarmichael Because the uni couldn't get enough placements for everyone, therefore, year 1 was sacrificed, I'll be an expert virtual patient-nurse but when it comes to real people, I won't have a clue. They have even completed a state of the art virtual hospital, we're year 1, not allowed so I'm a little upset that uni is making up lectures twice a week to make up for not going and calling it placement hours.
@@tonybrimmicombe5454 Aw this is such a shame!! But I’m glad you’ll be protected at least. It’s just so sad that this has to happen :( you need that clinical experience out there.
