In terms of the compressor, I like the first approach with the slow attack. I'm no pro but have read in multiple places to set the ceiling -1 to -1.5 dB nowadays.
Great video, Mike! I always look forward to your Plugin of the Week videos. Slate just came up with the new Custom Series EQ plugins. I hope you do a review on that one too!
Ish Santos Thanks Ish! I saw the new plugin but have been a bit skeptical about it. Must be the annual license thing bugging me! Feel like I'm being duped into something I'll regret later. I think I'm going to demo it out first and see if I like it. If I think it is worth making a video, you will see it some time in the next few weeks. Cheers! Mike
Dear Mi. White, you are a true inspiration and I really love your work! Could you please direct me to where I might be able to listen and buy this song? I'm so happy everytime that hook comes along, it's just amaizing work, by everyone involved! Wish you all an awsome rest of 2018! :)
Try it without the comp on, to reach your radio-CD level in your master bus, set at -6 db first. I like using it that way if your mastering, then use the low punch & detail knobs to satisfaction. It's a matter of preference I guess! Nice vid & cool tune !! :)
Dennis LaPlant just did this! Turning the comp off and using them independently is magic. In your experience, does it mess with the stereo field? It does for me, my snare leans all over the place, different for each hit.
Hey Mike, thanks for the insight! In your opinion, do you still need to use a multi-band compressor on your master bus or does FG-X pretty much covers it all?
redeyefugu Hey redeyefugu, I take each song independently and only use multiband compression if the mix needs that kind of processing. The FG-X includes this, in a very rough way, with the LoPunch and Detail knobs. This is nowhere close to a complete solution for someone who is mastering for a living. It is a great solution for someone who is mastering their own work or is using it in addition to other services they are offering. Cheers! Mike
Hi MIke, thanks for a great tutorial.... Steven should consider using you to demo his plugins.. None have gone into quite the detail and depth of demonstration as you have here and I walk away from your video a whole lot more confident in a plugin I've already been happily working for a year, thanks again.
Hey Mike, I watch a video about Slate's new plugin pricing system where you subscribe to get their plugins. I like the idea but my biggest concern is the iLock, with your experience, is it actually that big of a burden to use. I do have multiple computers that I work with.
Zatore Hey Zatore, I have no problems whatsoever with the iLok system but I generally work from my studio and leave it there. You need to be careful that you do not forget it or lose it when using your other computer system. iLok has an insurance program that allows you to recover your licenses immediately if you lose it, otherwise it may take a bit of time to get your authorizations back. I guess it's hard to avoid for me since I use too many apps and plugins that only run on iLok. Otherwise, I have had no problems with the system working as long as you keep the iLok software up to date. If you sign up for the Slate System, I think they give you one for free. At least you can save a few $$$ there. Cheers! Mike
SkunkPack Studio Depends on how well the song was mixed and what it needs. Any of the above techniques i teach can work. Setting the attck time somewhere around 30ms and the release time to an 1/8 note or 1/16 not can be a great way to pump life into a mix. Cheers! Mike
Honestly, I'm having trouble hearing the differences when you're just demoing just the compressor. I thought the fast attack, slow release setting brought out the bass a little more, but overall, I probably wouldn't hear much of a different in either setting if I were blind tested (between the first two settings). I could hear a clearer difference between the third setting (1.1:1-ish ratio) and the limiter-type setting, but that was still very subtle, but if blind tested, I doubt I'd be able to tell you exactly what was going on with each setting.
+luiza177music Hi Luiza, Mastering is much more about subtle differences than dramatic ones. The focus is on the depth, imaging and tonal characteristics. Remember, this is only a Compressor-Limiter chain and not necessarily a complete mastering solution. Thanks! Mike
Great detailed review and of course a killer song.

@@ASJerrell just put a limiter ceiling on snare mix bus before mastering

Your the greatest but question, what attack and release times can I use the compressor on hip-hop/rap music??
