This I think is the first time I've witnessed a two and a half hour adventure where the players didn't manage to get out of the starting Inn the whole time, and still felt like the adventure actually went somewhere...
My party has spent alot of time in taverns. We have played four sessions and received 2 major quests in taverns, earned about a hundred gold in taverns, doubled our party size, got into multiple bar fights against other PCs, and made dozens of enemies. Long story short, taverns are awesome.
This is 2hat my party does for 3 hours straight. We have an alcoholic Dwarf and and alcoholic elf who is my best friend so I get to deal with her *interesting personality*. Such as throwing flour at people
There's no doubt Jerry is a sorcerer of words. If I have one gripe though, it's that he'll often explain to the players how they're feeling and what they're doing, instead of letting them do it themselves. I guess everybody has their own way of running the game. As long as the players are cool with it, I'm cool with, because this is an awesome first episode. Absolutely loving it, all in all.
It's very common for a new group who have never played together before that also contains players who have never played D&D before. You have to guide people in to their characters and then let them go (like a kid on a bike). You'll find if you just throw players into a situation they'll pretty much stare blankly or be really uncomfortable. That is doubly problematic when doing something for the camera.
For newer groups that's totally acceptable and actually positive. I find that players slowly over time begin to do that sort of thing for themselves and the DM can back off it. It's all about learning to be comfortable with the group you're in and getting a good feel for the game.
I agree both with yourself and the people who replied. Being told how you are feeling and what you are doing feels a lot like the DM is railroading the party (perhaps that was the intention to keep things on track). From experience, I've found that it can be easy to fall in this trap. You spend so long creating a story with an intended effect that it's hard to let it go anywhere else. I feel that for a DM who is running for newer players, giving them queues on how the situation is making their characters feel makes them more likely to feel comfortable role-playing that particular situation. More experienced players - or players who feel comfortable role-playing - will likely feel that it takes away from the experience
Yeah if he's sit back and let the players do their thing, it would be so much better. The excuse of new players is pretty bogus. If they are new and Jerry knows they are new then he should ask them what they want to do, what would they like to do, what do you think you'd like to do. Something to get that ball rolling so a new player gets into making those choices on their own. Railroading players by telling them what they do, how they feel, they may as well not even be there at all. Jerry can use a dice roller and just tell his story while an Iphone app rolls for the characters as needed.
I love to play an old-as-fuck, grumpy (red) dragonborn wizard that has a fake white beard. Because then I get to lecture and patronize all of the damnable young whippersnappers in my party when they do something stupid. (Even though it's usually my idea...) I also get to tell off any Druids as tree-humping primitives and all sorcerers and warlocks as incompetent dabblers. And I get to say "POPPYCOCK!" a lot. _I also had this character concept in play andactive use long before I ever heard of Tiberius Stormwind, mmyyeeess._
@@dustinjones7458 How I see class levels are levels of your character's adventuring career, not just their age. For example, my middle aged "fatherly" cleric started at level 3 because he became a cleric at a later age. He was a common merchant who had a safe and stable life until he lost his son (wife passed away earlier), so he became depressed and lost until his deity gave him purpose and a mission. Same how an old wizard can be like level 10 through studying the library for 50 years, but a young wizard can gain experience by adventuring and constantly practice his magic in dangerous situations and achieve the same level quicker I mean how else are elves, who mature at age 100 be as good a fighter as a human 20 year old fighter at level 1? You just adjust how the character gained the experience Or you can narratively sap their level, i.e. K'Thriss Drowb
if its animate, VM would have just taken turns charming the door, putting Scanlan last to bat because he would get it no matter what.. And then they would have had a new recurring NPC character to visit. Tell me I'm exaggerating.
I miss the C-team. I would listen to this when my son wouldn’t sleep and we’d watch it together when he was a baby and we were chilling together. My son is now 7 and loves DnD. It’s real wholesome over here. Imagine a dark wholesome.
Love it! Player/DM since 78. I recently created an Acquisitions Inc. campaign of goblin PC’s and can’t wait to play/DM. Good times. Hope this comes back or is carrying on.
Weird, the way I looked up Acq Inc, and got (what Im guessing is) your previous playthrough as a player in the game, to now DMing this, using your friend's character as an NPC. I wish I could find a dedicated player like that. Awesome.
I love that tavern music going on in the background - perfect level of ambiance without being annoying. I also really like Jerry's DMing. How he summarizes what's going on every few minutes is nice because sometimes you can get lost in the dialogue and it gives the other players a chance to tune back in and get going in the game.
I cannot get over the BARS that are the intro. Save your breath for a cleric confessor; Death is a lesson and life is a tenured professor?!? Sweet baby jesus, Straub. Is that all you?
That was a lot of fun, and I enjoyed seeing Jerry DM. He has a COMPLETELY different style from Chris (granted, Chris is a professional DM- which is an amazing job title, by the way), but I loved his kind of weird, out there version and world building. I would love to see Mike take a stab at Doing this crew too, because he has yet again a unique take on DMing.
MarkD1159 I'd actually like to see Mike take on a completely different group. Seeing Amy playing makes me wonder what kind of D&D character Abby would make.
There's a president that animals will bring a "trophy" as proof of their skill in order to join a new pack. I don't know if cats do this, but I know dogs/wolves do it. Basically a way of saying "I'd like to join your pack, but don't worry I won't be a hindrance: see how good a hunter I am?"
I loved this! Can't wait for more!! Don't worry about the "umms" and "uh"s Jerry, we know it's difficult and sort of pressuring to be a DM in front of so many people. I think it would be nice to have the portrait of the characters next to the players in the layout.
Man, I'm so excited to see Kris back. He was amazing in the Dark Sun campaign that Jerry ran several years back. I just love listening to his voice, his creativity and his comedic timing is great.
No doubt, I'm super excited about the possibility here. Old school acquisitions Inc. smell with a new blood flavor. Bring on the acid pits, rent a meca beholder, light the cauldron with the holy GREEN FLAME!! Interns be damned we got chips to stack !!!
This is a fresh and entertaining take on D&D. Too much fun and shenanigans and the flow of a 4 person group doesn't grow tiring. Keep this show ALIVE! P.S Thank you Jerry for stepping up to the DM chair
I am not sure what I expected from this series from a story point of view but what ever it was it was not that. What that was, was amazing. I adore the DM, I adore the players and I think I am a bit in love with this series already. Thanks so much for all the work put in making this
First: Hottest. Halfling. Ever. Awesome to see Kris at the table again. I've been waiting for him to return since Dark Sun and Mines of Madness. When Scott left I hoped he would become the next full time intern, but this is also great. Now I get to watch his character grow over time. I love the group dynamic and how they grew together over the course of just one session. Four great players and an equally great DM. I'm hooked. Awesome job, Jerry. The twist at the end was amazing. It was only after I saw the "giant mice" that it all made sense. ;) Nice. More please. :)
I honestly didn't even notice the "uh" stuttering until people pointed it out in the comments. DMing on the fly is not perfectly fluent for everyone. But he did a good job. I gotta admit, I wish I had watched the whole video before I read the whiney comments because now all I can pay attention to is the stutter. Thanks for ruining this for me _-_
I heard some familiar music here. They definitely used music from Baldur's Gate (the Friendly Arms Inn theme somewhere around 37:11 and another tavern song at 38:23) and WOW (classic tavern theme at 55:36). There are a few other tracks that sound really familiar, but I can't figure them out at the moment, and there are a few I can't hear clearly. Anyone else recognize the the other music here?
I absolutely love that this series has been created. When I met Jerry Holkins at PAX Prime in 2014, I joked that I could make him the FDD (franchise disclosure document) for him if he starts franchises for Acquisitions Inc (he'd already talked about franchising for years and I happened to work in that industry). I just hope he got capable legal advice to ensure both Omin (the franchisor) and the adventurers (the franchisees) get to profit and work in good faith together... It's not exactly the vibe I think Omin's going for :P
Bit of feedback. When the video changes between the 2- and 4-player perspective, there is often a very a short audio interrupt as well (ex. at 56:10). Not terrible, but definitely noticeable, especially when a player is in the middle of a sentence. Look forward to more episodes!
If Woody Allen was my DM... It is difficult to put aside the dream team of Chris Perkins and "the chaps", but I like Jerry's style. This will level out over time as the players settle in and Jerry gives them some room to shine.
Already watched this on Twitch, but commenting here. A bit shaky at the start, but it's to be expected with everyone still finding their feet, and there's still some good stuff there. It gets better as it goes on. Really enjoyed it overall. Interested to see where this goes.
First time watching DnD outside of Critical Role and in the first episode they are encountering door monsters. Vox Machina's worst nightmare. This is awesome.
What I find most interesting is they play in 'theatre of the mind' which is what I lean toward more and more these days. Nothing against miniatures, but happy to see D&D as I learned it. It also gave this game a different feel than the A, Inc. games have started to unfold into. Large set pieces with miniatures. Don't get me wrong. Got TONS of miniatures, but this feels like home.
How to mess with a Druid: Step 1- make him/her befriend a predator-animal Step 2- present him/her with intelligent versions of that predators natural prey Step 3- the prey requests the Druid's assistance in murder-facing the predator
So, since they don't do class/race introductions right at the start: Rosie Beestinger (Kate Welch) = Lightfoot Halfling Shadow Monk, dangerous grandma K'thriss Drow'b (Kris Straub)= Drow Great Old One Tomelock, suffering from a modest dose of memory/skill loss Donaar Blit'zen (Ryan Hartman) = Copper Dragonborn Vengeance Paladin, who allegedly knows more than 100 dragons Walnut Dankgrass (Amy Falcone) = Wood Elf Moon Druid, child of the Enclave Panax Anima
Tycho Brahe is a dope DM. Y'all trippin off a speech pattern not worried about the content, that's some other to me and I ain't messing with it. This video, I mess with. Dope.
It's obvious you care deeply about the fact that a couple hundred people deny that Jerry makes an "umm" sound every couple words. That much, I can see. The only thing I can't see is why the fuck you give enough of a shit to post multiple comments ragging on people who don't care enough about the way Jerry speaks to acknowledge the flaws in it.
Only just noticed that the music is the same as the Gwent music from Witcher 3. And I can identify specific door opening/closing samples from TV shows and movies. Damn 😅
Symbology is actually a word. It's the study of symbols or the art of expression by symbols/use of symbols. So referring to unknown symbols as unknown symbology or saying that you identify something as AI symbology isn't incorrect. ...although, I also immediately thought of that quote, as well. xD
For those who want to be able to view each C team episode over multiple sittings easily, search for "last left off net". Works for Twitch and Podcast mp3's too.
"I was just looking for a comedic opening." "Everything hinges on these puns." "I can't believe how quickly that came to a close." "Get me out of here!" "Copy that."
"You meet in a tavern, and the tavern tries to eat you" is the best subversion I've seen of that D&D trope ever 😂
Aaaaaand yet another reminder for me to NEVER read the damn comments on a DnD video....
I actually was planning to do something like this for a 1 shot
Holy shït
tavern mimics are a really old joke dude
This I think is the first time I've witnessed a two and a half hour adventure where the players didn't manage to get out of the starting Inn the whole time, and still felt like the adventure actually went somewhere...

This is why adventurers kick in the door. Binwin doesn't get bit by doors cause he's got a solid system in place.

Less than five minutes in and this is already going to be one of my top favorite D&D games, no idea why I haven't watched this series sooner
I love that Rosie is a thing. Not enough old characters in D&D imo.
I love to play an old-as-fuck, grumpy (red) dragonborn wizard that has a fake white beard.

@@RuSosan I once had a player play as an old wizard with a giant grey (real) beard that would flap in the magical winds whenever he cast a spell.
Problem is most campaigns start at lower level. So either you're wet behind the ears youngster or a moldy oldy who somehow reaches lv.2 at 76.

Mimic doors. Vox Machina would've been completely destroyed.
I put my players up against a mimic door that would only open if told a knock-knock joke it found funny. That was good.
🙂yeah they tend to be slowed by doors.
Not slowed, defeated and demoralized. (VM was the first thing I thought of too when the door attacked)
Spoiler Alert!!!!! Lol I kid

I’m back here 8months after the finale…
I think I’m ready to do it all over again
Not even half a scene into it - Amy's like "Wallnut is not here to make friends" :D
hahahahaha! "Computer! End program!" That was genius!

I applaud and approve of all the puns on the show.
TMW you realize the person you're mugging plays Bridge with your Nonna on the weekends......
This was fantastic. Set was clean, camera angles were on point. Just gotta clean up those overlay transitions. Can't wait to see more. Nice table!
Yeah, 4 a while there I though my monitor had a loose cable or was glitching.
there are people that actually watch these instead of just listening?
Superb! I haven't seen Jerry DM since Dark Sun! The picture he paints with his descriptions is beautiful! I hope to see more of this crew!

So thankful that you guys are doing this series, it's pretty indepth so I watch it through the week in bursts... Everyone is awesome!
Two days after the series finale. I'm back, watching this.

Two Words Jerry Holkins, "Chandelier Mimic".

Weird coincidence, in my old d&d group. I played a blue dragon born named Donari and we had a druid on our team who was also named Walnut.

take a look at the episode titled "Jimterlude". Episode 18, i think. you'll find exactly what you asked for there.
That was a fun start. It was very interesting watching Jerry as the Gm and look forward to the next part.

I miss this show so much. About to run another acq inc campaign and decided to rewatch this.
AqInc is basically VaultTec from my estimation.
Fragtastic Omin cares mildly for the main crew, so he isn't as bad as Vault tec.
Love this! Jerry's fantastic use of language alone is enough to keep me watching.
The background sound absolutely makes this, aside from the characters and Jerry that is!
Yes. I am re-watching this. This entire campaign.
i like that the party is working together and all that....without EVER introducing themselves in character.
Congrats on Ep 1 Team C! Great game

They used pretty much every variation of Gwent/tavern music from The Witcher 3.
The Realm Online MIDI music is sprinkled throughout.
Could have sworn there was something from Pillars of Eternity but I don't wanna go over it again to check it out.
yeah haha ive been playing witcher nonstop for the past 2 weeks and hearing that music made me perk up a bit lol

Good stuff; the setting is really interesting. On a technical note, there are a lot of really sharp audio cuts which are kind of distracting.

Rosie Beestinger (Kate Welch) = Lightfoot Halfling Shadow Monk, dangerous grandma
K'thriss Drow'b (Kris Straub)= Drow Great Old One Tomelock, suffering from a modest dose of memory/skill loss
Donaar Blit'zen (Ryan Hartman) = Copper Dragonborn Vengeance Paladin, who allegedly knows more than 100 dragons
Walnut Dankgrass (Amy Falcone) = Wood Elf Moon Druid, child of the Enclave Panax Anima
When is a door not a door? WHEN IT'S DEAD!
Very excited to see Jerry as a DM and Kris as a player. This should be great!
Behind the scenes, Mice control everything! How very Douglas Adams of you!
Love the dome wax Jerry
Tycho Brahe is a dope DM. Y'all trippin off a speech pattern not worried about the content, that's some other to me and I ain't messing with it. This video, I mess with. Dope.
It's obvious you care deeply about the fact that a couple hundred people deny that Jerry makes an "umm" sound every couple words. That much, I can see. The only thing I can't see is why the fuck you give enough of a shit to post multiple comments ragging on people who don't care enough about the way Jerry speaks to acknowledge the flaws in it.
Awesome session folks! I cannot wait for the next one
Better call him Kris Kross Straub for that sick intro
Only just noticed that the music is the same as the Gwent music from Witcher 3. And I can identify specific door opening/closing samples from TV shows and movies. Damn 😅
Great first episode! Keep up the good work everyone, will see you all next week. :)
@41:47 (voice of the boondock saints detective) I believe the word you're looking for is SYMBOLISM :P
xakannax I thought the exact same thing at that moment.
Symbology is actually a word. It's the study of symbols or the art of expression by symbols/use of symbols. So referring to unknown symbols as unknown symbology or saying that you identify something as AI symbology isn't incorrect.
...although, I also immediately thought of that quote, as well. xD
Oh i know its a word, but it was too much fun to post
Anna Robinson Yes... but it's a joke... lol
Holy crap Jerry is a GREAT Dm! I love it!
The ambiance is a nice touch, thinking ill include some next time i DM
Jerry, all 5 people got your Altered Beast joke.
For those who want to be able to view each C team episode over multiple sittings easily, search for "last left off net". Works for Twitch and Podcast mp3's too.

"I was just looking for a comedic opening."
"Everything hinges on these puns."
"I can't believe how quickly that came to a close."
"Get me out of here!" "Copy that."
First session, first combat, first injuries;
“I’m quite old, it’s my time”
“But I want to die”
Love this so much, been there, died 😂
59:05 "chandeliers are a common fixture". I gotcha, Kris.
