Below 24mm the unavoidable perspective distortion is very obvious in photos. This perspective distortion can be used artistically but usually it is annoying and isn't always easy to be corrected digitally afterwards when the photo is unbalanced. Very ultra wide lenses demand a special way of shooting. It is usually good the subject to be on the center and the camera to be leveled. Ultra wide lenses are rarely used by amateurs and can produce unique photos no matter who popular the subject is. The construction of ultra wide lenses is very optically demanding. That's why good quality ultra wide lenses are always expensive and heavy. Something good with ultra wide lenses is that have very easy manual focus. The depth of field of ultra wide lenses is much deeper than other lenses. Usually everything is in focus after two meters and with apertures above f/4.
Where you able to here the lens focussing on the audio of the camera? I saw you where using a lav- mic. I am considering using this lens for vlogging but only if the AF is silent. My sigma 35mm art lens is just too loud when it comes to continuous AF
Hi, John, I was wondering how is this lens focus work with new camera like 7C, will it focus faster? Do you still recommand this lens by 2022? Now it is onsale $499+adapter $199, thank you
Another excellent informative video John, thanks! You've tested a couple lenses with the Sigma MC-11 Converter and slower focus over native lenses seems a common theme. Concerning this particular lens, think I'd prefer the Basis 18mm that I have. Yes, you give up the wider range of this zoom, but at the same price (not including an additional $250 for the MC-11 converter), you get faster f/2.8 glass, less distortion, quicker focus, amazing colors, and across the frame sharpness in a lighter package. (No, I don't work for Zeiss ; ) Just my dos centavos. Keep up the good work!
I wouldn't recommend using this lens for videography, because it has heavy focus-breathing. Quite noticeable around 5:05. Your face stays sharp, but the focal range shifts wile maintaining the auto-focus. It is one of the back draws a video-lens shouldn't have.
John, during and more so at the end of your videos you say "now" with a heavy breath, my wife says it sounds as though you are tired and happy to be finished with the task. I love your work and did not notice it until she mentioned it. Just a "heads-up," sorry to put another self-conscious thing on your mind when making these useful clips.
Hi John, can you comment on the corner sharpness of the lens at 12mm with the MC-11 adapter? For many wide angle lenses, the corner sharpness suffers quite a bit when used with an adapter? Thank you...
thanks for your review... my 16-35mm hardly gets used and is more a travel photography lens due to weight... but i find it too soft... would you say this Sigma is a lot sharper? if so, i might consider trading out and dealing with the extra weight if the sharpness is significant
You're welcome! Is your lens really soft? I have actually had a different experience with it. I think its best to stick with the 16-35mm for now. At the tele end its not that great. The 16-35mm is actually better when it comes to that focal length. See if Sony comes out with something else in the E-mount soon :)
John Sison it's soft to me, as i got a cityscape shot of Victoria Peak in HK and looking at the edges it's pretty soft. it's not razor sharp like I'm used too with other lenses... but it's not unacceptable... given size and weight i can live with it... but on the basis it's a Zeiss branded lens and pretty expensive i had hoped it would be sharper... but there aren't many Sony options. if i ever get around to writing up a written review i will send you a link ;)
Not sure why you would want a zoom ring at the front? I didn't buy the new Nikon 70-200 for exactly that reason. Nothing worse than zooming your shot and knocking the focus ring. Stupid idea on Nikon's part. Sigma and Tamron have done the same. Awesome review though, very well made. Subbed.
Yep! I'm not a big fan of that as well. There might be some engineering reason for it but it does make things confusing. Thank you for the support! =.D
I have a question - how are the corners of the frame? And how bad is the IQ at the tele-end, i.e. compared to the Batis 2/25 or 24-70GM? I've liked the video and have subscribed long time ago, so please respond :)
Hehe thanks for supporting the channel! :) Stopping down helps to about F8 or F7.1. Compared to the Batis and the GM the 12-24mm at the tele end is not even close to how sharp the other two are.
Are you using the Sony cameras? It shouldn't have trouble with continuous autofocus on the A7RM2, especially if the subject isn't that close. I did a quick walk around myself at home and I was always in focus.
I have a Sony a7sii and I really want to get these new sigma art lenses like the 135 f1.8 with the MC-11 adapter but I am afraid that the continuous autofocus performance in video mode will be on par with thh meta bones and a canon L series lens which is extremely poor performance, near unusableble. I don't understand why there is not 1 youtube review out there address this question. How does the MC-11 compare to the meta bones adapter for video continuous autofocus when using equivalent glass from canon and sigma respectively.
Ah fair enough.. If I had one, I would have done a video just for you. I'm curious to see how well it does too. I can do a video with continuous autofocus with the 135mm when I get it though.
@@JohnSisonPhotography I am thinking of it with A7iii but since i have canon c200 i dont want to invest on e mount version but instead canon because i have mc-11
Not entirely true, there the Sony Pancake lens 16mm with Ultrawide Converter gives 12mm (finding one is the problem though) But, since it's not a Fullframe lens you do end up with 18mm
You could say long and short end of the lens instead of "tele" end-telephoto is a lens design and i would doubt this lens is designed like that. Just a suggestion.
Thanks for the feedback! I always get stuck in figuring out what to say about that but that's a good way to put it! I will remember that! Thanks so much! hehe
The 16-35mm GM or the 12-24mm G series? In my opinion, the Sony is much better than the Sigma. Plus the size and weight make it much easier to carry around. I don't have a comparison video cause I don't have the Sigma anymore.
They, Sigma needs to rename, sounded very close to fART REVIEW ;). Sorry! Also, I will become a fan of Sony systems if I had control over focus points, just like the others.
Love the outtakes, John, keep adding them in future vids.
Hi John excellent video as always, did you notice any loss of sharpness towards the wide angle edges when using this lens combined with the mc-11.
Towards the edges it wasn't as sharp in the centres but still very good for what it is, stopping down to about F7.1 or F8 helps a bit though.
Hi John, could you make a video of sigma 24-105mm art lens on a6000 series pls?

Sony just added their native 12-24 f/4 to its arsenal at about half the weight and almost the same price as this Sigma (with adapter added).
Yep that's true :)
Thanks for a nice to watch review. Nicely done, not over the top or anything. Keep up the great work :)
Thank you! Appreciate the kind words! !
Sony just released their 12-24 f4 FE lens! Almost half the weight as the Sigma and Canon 11-24. I have 1 on order....
I have one on order too! XD

What about the 14-24mm 2.8 art anyone know if that lens has noticeable focus breathing?

Lens sounds cool but I wold destroy that front element the first day :(
Awesome as always, can you review some third party battery's for the Sony alpha series?
Hmm if only I had some. I'll see what I can do.
Thank you for introducing the lens :D

John, you mention Sony doesn't often anything wider than a 16-35 mm. What about the Sony 10-18 mm?
Danny Dam . I assume he refers to full frame lens. The 10-18 is for apsc models.
FJ ZM oh OK I see. Thank you
Yep that was the case. Sorry I should have said for full frame.
Like alaway! Great video! Congrats John!
Thank you! :)
Have you tried it with the A7Riii? Curious to see if the AF issue is fixed?
Haven't tried it with the A7R III yet.

Could you test Sigma 14-24 f2.8 with mc-11?
Do you think tokina 12-24 f4 canon amount will work on my A7 with sigma mc-11? Thanks for the answer
It should work but I don't think the autofocus would work properly.
how functional / practical is the continuous autofocus focus for video in run and gun video shooting?

Continuous autofocus works fine - its just not as quick. It tracked pretty well too!

Yeah for sure! Thank you! :)
The problem with autofocus is due to sony body not the lens.
how is the sharpness on the edges?
Its sharp but not as good when compared to the centre.
Sony offers a 12-24mm f/4 now.
compare this with the Sony 10-18. F4
Ah I don't have the 10-18mm on me at the moment but that lens is made for crop whereas the 12-24mm is made for full frame.
Ok it is very expensive compared to the Sony lens.. good review
thanks

I believe nisi is a Chinese brand which pretends to look like a western brand and it has not so good reputation in China
