Rockhounding Chrysocolla & Making A Grim Discovery at Boss Mine- Sandy Valley, Nevada

  • In this episode of Solomon's Vegas Adventures, Solomon & EJ went rockhounding for Chrysocolla, Malachite, Azurite, and other Copper Minerals at an abandoned mine near Sandy Valley called the Boss Mine, erroneously referred to as the Azurite Mine by some.
The Boss Mine is an abandoned mine located in the southwestern Spring Mountains near Sandy Valley, NV, about an hour southwest of Las Vegas. It is located in the Goodsprings Mining District and was opened in the 1890s, originally for copper. In the 1910's, however, Platinum and Palladium were discovered here and the mine boomed. Copper was still mined but was merely an afterthought after the much more valuable Platinum, Palladium, Gold, and Silver taken from the place. The mine was abandoned as the deposits of the more valuable metals were depleted.
Today, all that remains of the Boss Mine is several portals, adits, and shafts, extensive tailings still rich with metals, and LOTS OF COPPER. The area is literally FILLED with Chrysocolla, Azurite, Malachite, and other Copper Minerals, and several veins of it are still intact in and around the mines. I did not enter any of the adits because I made a vow with myself to never again explore abandoned mines underground, but there is so much copper left at this mine that you won't need to enter any of the portals. You could scour the tailings alone for months and still have lots of copper left. One of the portals is about 25-30 feet tall and resembles a natural cave more than it does an abandoned mine.
Originally, this video was planned to be a fun rockhounding video. EJ and I took an extensive amount of specimens we found (as legally you can, since it's on BLM Land), mainly Chrysocolla and Malachite, and I was planning to take them to a shop to get polished and turned into jewelry. The Chrysocolla, Malachite, and Azurite you can find at this locality is indeed gem quality, and as I previously stated, there is so much still left here. However, we made a grim discovery at and about the locality, and it will make you reconsider collecting any specimens from it. After we found what we found, I cannot recommend or suggest rockhounding or taking any specimens from here, despite the high-quality and abundance of the copper minerals. I don't want to give too much away, as I want people to watch the video to see our discovery.
The adage is that if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. That was definitely the case here. What a shame.

I camped out there a lot and would explore the area looking at the mines and rocks. When i learned just how much of the area was "infected" with uranium, i never returned. Theres just so much.

That's the main issue with mining in the entire desert area that is the Southwest. A lot of the minerals are contaminated with other things that make it a real headache to deal with processing them. Back in 1900 or so they didn't even hardly know about radioactivity, but if a mine is showing massive veins like that and is abandoned, it's for a reason.

You were at the Azurite Mine in fact, the Boss mine is on the ridge immediately to the southeast, you can see the portals for the Boss mine form the Azurite Mine. But they are 2 separate mines.

My husband & I went out to Sandy Valley a while back. At the time, there was a life-sized Santa Clause "thumbing a ride" on the left side of the highway...y'all, that was extremely bothersome to me. Not only was I creeped out, but it wasn't as bad as going down into that 1st mine. My husband & I are what you'd call extremely intuitive of things others can't see. Well, we got at least 900 feet down inside it & we were doing everything we could to get the hell outta there!! He took a picture towards the spot where we were hearing things & that's when we started bookin' it! Needless to say that we no longer go there, nor do we talk about it.

If you’re going to go into a cave or mine the very least protective gear you should have is a hard hat. A Geiger counter is a good idea as well. Radioactive material isn’t safe to keep in your house but if you store it properly and don’t handle it a bunch it is probably fine. Keep your time around the minerals down, make sure you keep it at a safe distance and put some lead shielding around it. Keep it in an airtight container because it will keep the alpha particles away from your lungs. Check out I think his name is Radioactive Drew on RUclips. He has a great common sense approach to this type f stuff.
Are people allowed to dig at that location? I’m assuming the claim has probably expired but it’s always good to check ahead of time.

You were wise not to go too far into that mine. The foundation can collapse but there are also snakes and all sorts of Hazzards to be mindful of..
I almost stepped on a western diamond back yesterday while gem searching at diamond point. I screamed and both of us were pretty scared and we went opposite ways. I was listening to music and would of heard the rattle faster..
So I chalked it up to being my fault in not paying attention and just happy i didn't get bit.

@solomonsoutdooradventures how much risk of exposure to radiation would you say there is when visiting out old mines that have produced copper, lead, and zinc? Many of the gold mines have these minerals in abundance along side the gold and silver ore. Would the tailings piles be a dangerous place to rockhound and should I keep any specimens from places like this? I live in Vegas and I like to visit these sites as well, but now I'm concerned.

You don't have to do all the voices. You are very likeable and I like it when you are just being your nerdy self ✨💜💎.
Are you Jewish? I only ask because you use Yiddish..I am not Jewish but I have like old school (11 millennium maternal haplotype) north Israel and South lebanese area genes on my mom's side. So that would be like ancient Hebrew/ Phoenician mixed. Like precursor weird Dirka dirka genes to alot of groups historically.
You are quite the gem maven ❤
You are talented and just be yourself and keep doing these videos. You have a good niche because not many people that do these kinds videos have the same knowledge and ability to educate about what they are finding like you do.
I love gems because they demonstrate metaphysical vibrational frequencies (how life flows behind the scenes like blue prints to how things work behind the scenes) via morphology, chemistry. Etc
I like you add the chemistry aspect.
So. Keep doing these i guarantee you will keep getting more followers and be a success. Your knowledge and love of gems shines thru ✨
