As co-director, -writer and -designer of 198X, I'm overwhelmed by the kind words and excitement expressed by all you wonderful people in the comments. We're so happy to bring you this labour of love to Switch. Our most humble thanks to Nintendo for featuring our trailer - and to each and every one of you for your touching love and support.
From our little team in Stockholm, Sweden; tack så mycket!

This game is so inspiring! As a Game design student from the netherlands, this game has definitely insprired students here. We're currently all busy doing projects but trailers like these keep us going! Maybe one day one of us can do an internship with you ;P
This game sounds like a virtual novel
Scott pilgrim-y
But it seems to have actual gameplay elements though.
It's an arcade stylised game with an angsty teen drama thrown in. Ergo a mix of genres. How much one element drives the other, who knows?
I doubt many people want to play the game for the story, moreso for the throwback action, style & soundtrack.
YOU'RE breathtaking!
@@earthmanbrick The story is driven by those elements, and definitely the reason for me to play it.

Now this is how you build up hype with a launch trailer, I wasn’t even around in the 80’s so no nostalgia for me but this looks fantastic!
Spoiler alert: the 80s was a lot more pixelated and staticy then the trailer leads one to believe.
The game is out on steam
Yeah dude there were spaceships and dragons in the 80s for sure
Smónker what a time to be alive!
I was born in the 90s but I love the 80s it looked so futuristic. The music, movies, fashion etc.
I think this game deserves a novelization. Seriously, it so great in descriptive storytelling from the narrator, that I think it would be very cool as a Young Adult novel set in the 80's.
I love it when games use multiple genres for gameplay and storytelling.
(When did this get 2000+ likes??)

@@GianniEndo It can't be a haiku. It doesn't have the correct amount of syllables. The first line has four syllables, then 5, 5, and then 6. But it's still a good comment regardless.
As someone who grew up in the 80s this hits me in the nostalgia. This is an instant buy for me. :)
I grew then as well. But I think nostalgia is a drug. And not a good one. It keeps you weak and craving the past.... use it very very sparingly....
It’s called target audience
"Everything seems to terrifying and exciting at the same time."
Amazing. You perfectly captured why being a child is so wonderful. When there's nothing to get excited about, to feel about, life becomes *dull.*
Not to get too philosophical in this comment section under a video game trailer (game looks awesome btw), I would argue that it is not always true that a child dies when they grow up. For me, my inner child has come alive again in recent times thanks in large part to Nintendo and the love and support of my girlfriend.
I think that the child in us dies only if we let it; if we let go of or forget the things that we love, willingly or otherwise. Being an adult is...different, I'll admit. But I never let go of the things that I loved as a child (except for action figures, I'm too self-conscious to keep those), and for that reason I believe my inner child will live forever.
aDULLt.....
@@Dovah21 I don't think they mean that specifically with your inner child dying. It's leaving behind your innocence and forming a new identity, one that is fit to face the harsh reality of the world we adults step in. As a child, the world revolves around you and life is carefree and worriless. But as you grow up, you'll realize how indifferent the world is and that it moves on, with or without your presence.
"They say that when you grow up, something inside you dies."
How true is it.
The trailer made my inner child excited. Well done.

THERE ARE USES OF TOBACCO
I know you're just pointing at the absurdity, but would any kid or pre-teen be really interested in a coming-of-age story?
@@Linkale_ Um, yes. Thats the demographic CoA stories typically apeal to.
@@phillystevesteak6982 I don't think so, these kind of stories usually require the viewer to have already "come of age" to really have a perspective about what's going on on the character's mind
@@Linkale_ Well, perhaps this game is an interesting exception because it's targeting nostalgic gamers who grew in the 80s. But CoA stories are typically made to be relateable for kids currently going through that time.
Oh noes! Tobaccoez!
Been a few years, and this still holds up as one of the best video game trailers ever. If only the game itself could go on forever, but the metaphor of how short the game is reflects well on how short childhood is.

Honestly, the 80's homages are miles better than the actual 80's were, though I was just a kid then. Maybe it was better as a teen.
Ok, let me explain this
The Beat em' up is Streets of Rage
The Shoot em' up is R-Type
The racing game is Outrun
The RPG is Phantasy Star on the Sega Master System
And the ninja game is Strider.
The RPG was the only one I couldn't get and all I could think was "Soooooo..... Nintendo's just blatantly ripping off all these games?" Wasn't 198X the year from Mega Man?
The original Phantasy Star on the Master System is one of the most underrated games of all time. Better than the original Final Fantasy games for my money.

I am so jealous of everyone who grows up in the 80s! This must be such an amazing time.
I mean... They weren't that great when you see what happened in the real world at the time outside of media.
I did grow up in the '80s. I think a lot of the nostalgia though comes from the fact that we didn't pay any attention to world events, we had no idea what was going on in politics. Sure, the world was scary but it was magical. And we were much more full of hope for the future.
Many things we could do in the 80s, and never thought twice about, we can no longer do anymore.
The 80s had their ups and downs... On the bright side, people were much more social and you could do lots of great things that are no longer possible. On the other side, we had the geopolitical bickering between the US and the USSR. Not to mention the AIDS crisis...
This game feels like the story of my life, I was overwhelmed by nostalgia and been able to connect me back to someone that I've lost for decades: myself. Thank you very much for such a masterpiece.
I’m really vibin at this, the music, the visual, the concept, everything! Looking forward to play this
This game is made by fairly famous video game journalists here in Sweden. Tobias Bjarneby, the director of this game has been writing lengthy awesome nostalgic text about video games since the early 90's when he wrote for the magazine "Nintendo Magasinet" (think of it as the Swedish Nintendo Power), then starting his own magazine "Super Power" which evolved into "Super PLAY" which then evolved into "LEVEL". LEVEL was discontinued in 2018, basically killed by the Internet. It was the last video game magazine in Sweden.
Tobias is a master of setting the scene and talking about how it is to grow up with games. His editorials about Super Mario Bros. 3 are quite legendary here in Sweden.
I beat this game. It was short but oh so wonderful. And to meet all the writers again after reading their magazines for 25 years was a wonderful thing.
Highly recommend this game.
I dunno why I always come back to this trailer
A couple of these scenes like the arcade remind me of my youth/early teens in the late 80's. I remember playing games that looked like this at Aladdin's Castle and Dennis' Place for Games back in Chicago during that time with many friends who sadly aren't alive any more. Thank you for the memories, I'll definitely be picking this game up.

I’m speechless. What an amazing trailer, leaving me emotional in the end, not only with excitement but also nostalgia and awe. First of all the concept of retro games as fragmented facets within the game is genius, and I feel confident they’ll capture the feel of every genre of its age that it’s trying to integrate. The coming of age story is also something that grabbed me from the start and is an enticing way to tie all the different game types together. And can we talk about the art style? (The fighting part looks better than streets of rage 4 imo), and the soundtrack of this trailer? I got serious Stranger Things vibes from it all.
