She Died On The 27th Of December, 2009 At The Age of 61.
As wife of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, her role was laudable and quite visible in the progress of the nation. She believed in the active participation of women in National Development. Between 1985 and 1993, she established several programmes directed at mobilising Nigerian women. Foremost of them is the renowned “Better Life for Rural Women” inaugurated in Abuja in September 1987.

I had rare privilege of meeting her while I was on youth service. Few of us who were asaba corpers booked an appointment to see her at the magnificent Hilltop mansion. She was a beautiful soul. Her reception was warm and she called us UMU NNEM in asaba language it means MY SIBLINGS. Thank you Big sister Mariam Ndidi Babangida for your love and care . You remain indelible in our hearts. The most flamboyant and beautiful First Lady Nigeria has ever had. She was also very loved by her husband. She influenced her village to be the capital of the wealthiest State in Nigeria. Growing as a young girl looking at her on Tv was so inspiring. Many years later when I met the General, he is such a good hearted man and an exceptional man. She was the one who started the Sunday Market for Rural Women to have an opportunity to sell their wares in cities.I don't know about first Ladies in other countries but in Nigeria, Maryam Babanga has set a benchmark that no other First Lady has been able to match. You'll forever be remembered as a Stallion who loved and gave love to her people. Love cannot be feigned, the lie will out with time. You actually loved and even till today, years after your death, your collosal goodness lives on. Sleep on in perfect peace.
As a young man in Nigeria during her reign as first lady, this video brought back to me the memories of hope that abound. I am crying as I write because Nigeria departed from the great example she lived.

What a great woman she was. The narrator omitted the role she also played in the lives of children (disabled and motherless). In 1990 and 1991, she pioneered the First Lady's children's Trust Fund concert. I remember vividly because as a child, i participated in the welcome songs rendered at the grand finale of the event. Absolutely correct. I have never seen any first lady in Nigeria that has beat the records of late Mrs Mariam Babangida. I was privileged to meet her during her first daughter marriage in minna. What a beautiful soul, that accommodate everyone one. I wish she is alive, may her beautiful soul continue to rest in peace.
NDE, MAMSER and BETTERLIFE will keep the IBB regime forever in the good side of Nigerian history. MAMSER raised the awareness of ordinary Nigerians about their situation, NDE gave them the skills to change that situation. BETTERLIFE on the other hand raised the awareness of generations yet unborn. So if a political leader is challenged after Babangida, it is the product of the hardwork of Maryam. All the struggles that IBB has had to deal with was as a result of his own creation MAMSER. It all served the greater good at the end.
I pray that Allah in his infinite mercy bless Maryam and IBB with Jannatul fiddaus by forgiving their shortcomings and elevating their good deeds. She was a great woman. But I wonder why she didn’t continue the better life for rural women programs after her husband left office. This is the case with other First Ladies. After they leave office the initiative dies. Maryam Babangida legacy impacted lives especially rural women. It became a movement. But why it died or was not so popular after her husband stepped aside , beats me. What happened ? Rest on Maryam. You indeed came, saw and conquered.
