It makes me feel like I can make a go of it too. my man's got charisma on camera, he's talented and knowledgable, the content slaps, the production schedule is super high, the production itself is super high. The video is informative, engaging, and entertaining. Homeboy goin' places.

@GOD For Real Agreed, I just don't know what is meant by "the production schedule is super high", and I'm a session musician for the last 30 years! Please enlighten me!
@@thekeysman6760 his work output is at a high rate. A lot of channels come out with a decent video every couple of months with little shows every few weeks. This guy drops a banger around once a week. That's a high production rate.

I think I’m the only person on earth who has listened to Erykah badu didn’t ya know over a million times ..it’s been on repeat in my room for over 12 yrs now ..I never know that it was a sample I could have sworn all of its composure was natural and organic but I still love it especially after I found it’s origin
As a musician and a producer myself (went to university of Michigan music school) I MORE than fkn appreciate this channel and the history and the stories. WE LIVE FOR THESE STORIES MAN. God dammit this channel needs to have a million subs…..where have I been. Keep it up with these stories historical accounts for things that have happened regarding our favorite artists. This is a awesome.
Dude, you're deepdives are absolutely amazing!! You're doing a great job by digging out stories and facts that would have been left in obscurity otherwise. Thank you so much man, you're very appreciated!
I'm digging your videos brother, thanks for making them. I don't know if anyone has already mentioned, and this is strictly FYI and no kind of dig whatsoever, but that drum intro from Badu's "On & On" is actually "Top Billin'" by Audio Two (Priority Records 1988). Keep up the good work man!
Discovered this channel as a link to a Ramsay Lewis trio cover of summer breeze and I'm hooked. You're doing great work. Makes me wanna dog deep into the Soulquarians catalogue
This channel is underrated keep going I just found about this channel a couple days ago your videos are high quality this channel is gonna get a millions of subs
That kick drum beginning for Erykah Badu's "On & On" was actually a reproduction of the beat used in Audio II's track "Top Billin." The track (and, subsequently, that beat) was also used by Mary J. Blige in her track "Real Love." I just want to give credit where it's due for the source of that beat with regard to modern Hip Hop and Neo Soul.
This format is freaking awesome! Love the dissection of the song. Hope to see more of this type of video, or anything else you put out really. Nice work.
I think the major difference between your version and the one Dilla did with Badu is that he showed her how to chop. So the baseline buzz that you don’t hear in their version versus yours is because he made chops and not just a loop. When I first started doing beats, I tried to re-create the stakes is high by de la soul and had similar results but then when I chopped it instead of looped, I learned.
I've always found this use of the Dreamflower sample intriguing, as it came after a prior use in almost the exact same way, in 1999 on the track "Thin" by The Underwolves. The promo landed on my desk in 1999 on Blue (Island) records, before the Erykah track. After Blue closed down the Underwolves album eventually released in 2001 on Jazzanova Compost, which is of course after the Erykah track. But the Dreamflower sample was there in 1999.
The reason that short bass note wasn't in there is because it makes the loop seem shorter and keeps it slightly stuck in it's original context. The brilliance is in the nuances which allow the loop to continue whilst feeling open and as if it isn't repeating monotonously
The bass in the sample at 3:04 from Tarika Blue's Dreamflower is the melody in a song called Backseat by Ari Lennox and Cozz. It is not listed as a sample but that's the same melody.
I just discovered this channel yesterday on your D’Angelo video, finished listening to it after work and subscribed. I listened to several more on the way home and your subscriber count jumped up at least a couple hundred in the past 30 minutes Long story short, you’re about to blow up as long as you’re consistent in quantity because your quality is extraordinary, Glad to see it 👊🏽
excellent vid!! this one checks both the musical history & the praxis boxes. I love it so much!! just subscribed. you pay great homage to the... greatness of dilla, badu & tarika blue. my hat's off to you....
Dude I'm addicted to your vids. I'm an ummah and soulquarian Stan, but this song is on the NBA2k soundtrack right meow. The timing is great for the younger generation.
Earned a sub! I’ve recently thought about going back to making beats after having kids and all. No time… But then inspiration like this taps me on my shoulder. Thanks for bringing this up to sooth my uninspired soul. I loved Erykahs song and Dillas beat when it came. The original is just aloe vera for the soul. Peace and love!
Sick video man. Love the beat break down and the history lesson. hip hop needs more of this. Was curious if your fandom extends to any of dooms work? I think the beat off of rhymes like dimes is one of my favorite sample flips. Not a super obscure sample or anything but its used soo well and the way the solo from the original song is used in the outro is friggin *chefs kiss*. But I'd love to hear your opinion on it!
this is such an awesome channel, i know you will go places. i would love to see more beat recreations, as i’m a pretty new ableton user this gives me insight into workflow. thank you!

Channels like this gives me more reason to appreciate every song that I listen to, really thank you!
the greatest videos about music history and sampling on youtube by far
Man....The heat Dilla could make with today's technology! 👽🎧💪🏿
Faaaacts, he would have to charge $1,000,000 for a track!
Would argue him being limited to his MPC and having a minimal amount of options was part of what made his sound so special
tbh I don’t think modern technology really makes flipping samples that much easier, kind of the same just you don’t have to use a sampler
@hs0008 yeah, kinda like how Madlib only used GarageBand for his “Bandana” album
He'd still use the 3000 as he was so comfortable on it. Why change with technology when your method works? Like assuming a guitarist would play better on a 2024 Ibanez vs a 60s Strat
