J Dilla's Magic Trick - Recreating Erykah's "Didn't Cha Know"
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 29 сен 2024
- Dilla said "Pick a record to sample, any record" and the result was Erykah Badu's "Didn't Cha Know" from 2000's Mama's Gun. Let's recreate this song and talk about the story behind it.
(Also, at the end I said "The Common song Open Your Eyes" but obviously you know what I meant. Dilla sampled "Open Your Eyes" FOR the Common song "The Light")

What the hell?? This is so professional I imagined it as like a vox video or something over 100k subs! Your content is underrated af you deserve to blow up
Thank you 🙏 gotta do it right!
It’s lowkey criminal that this channel hasn’t blown up yet.
I agree! High level quality. His subs will be up in no time.
I was thinkin the same thing
Yeah - what he said 😮❤
This video is soooo high quality. Crushing it dude!!
Love your channel man
Logic made a track in honor of this beat too.
Man....The heat Dilla could make with today's technology! 👽🎧💪🏿
Faaaacts, he would have to charge $1,000,000 for a track!
Would argue him being limited to his MPC and having a minimal amount of options was part of what made his sound so special
tbh I don’t think modern technology really makes flipping samples that much easier, kind of the same just you don’t have to use a sampler
@hs0008 yeah, kinda like how Madlib only used GarageBand for his “Bandana” album
He'd still use the 3000 as he was so comfortable on it. Why change with technology when your method works? Like assuming a guitarist would play better on a 2024 Ibanez vs a 60s Strat
I love catching these channels under 2k subs and watching them get to a 250k+ subs in a year or 2. It makes me feel like I can make a go of it too. my man's got charisma on camera, he's talented and knowledgable, the content slaps, the production schedule is super high, the production itself is super high. The video is informative, engaging, and entertaining. Homeboy goin' places.
Thank you man 🙏🙏 trying to pay respect and shine a light on this music!
If you're passionate enough about something (genuinely) and continue your "10,000 hours", pretty much anything is attainable. But yes everything you said about this channel appears to be true! (Just came from watching the Soulquarians vid... my introduction to "Diggin The Greats" (which is a big win on the channel name too!!!!!!!!)
@GOD For Real Agreed, I just don't know what is meant by "the production schedule is super high", and I'm a session musician for the last 30 years! Please enlighten me!
frrrr
@@thekeysman6760 his work output is at a high rate. A lot of channels come out with a decent video every couple of months with little shows every few weeks. This guy drops a banger around once a week. That's a high production rate.
"naw it was a bad idea, nevermind" - that made me laugh! I love that I can learn about music from someone with humor! What a world we live in.
Oh there's more where that came from 😂
J Dilla will always be my favorite producer ever. Also, this is such a well produced video. Entertaining and educational.
Mine as well
@@jdilla999 What's ur #1 beat from dude?
@@phabeondominguez5971 man shoot Players, Climax, 1:11, Go Ladies, Running, Show Me What You Got For Me, Didn't Cha Know, Fine A Way, Stressed Out, Once Again, Stakes Is High, In the Streets plus many more
@@phabeondominguez5971 I know you said Number #1 but it's hard lol
@@jdilla999 bwa haha, but nah man, I get it, he's a great producer.. but that's the WHOLE point of this.. if you could only pick one, what's yo #1 beat of his?
That kick drum beginning for Erykah Badu's "On & On" was actually a reproduction of the beat used in Audio II's track "Top Billin." The track (and, subsequently, that beat) was also used by Mary J. Blige in her track "Real Love." I just want to give credit where it's due for the source of that beat with regard to modern Hip Hop and Neo Soul.
I knew I heard it before. Good looks on that.
Correct!
You are probably the only RUclipsr that first understands and appreciates this genre and era of music. And puts time and effort to give them their credit
I think I’m the only person on earth who has listened to Erykah badu didn’t ya know over a million times ..it’s been on repeat in my room for over 12 yrs now ..I never know that it was a sample I could have sworn all of its composure was natural and organic but I still love it especially after I found it’s origin
Damn i never knew this either
Repeat for 12 years😂 I get that😅
Me too bro.. I mean DAMN 😳
I listened 2 million times 😂
3 million for me
I love j dilla, but someone needs to make a video on his goofiest beats. My friend and I have spent an hour laughing at some of his worst shit 😭
you and your guy laughed for a hour at NOTHING?! Jay Dee made obscure shit, yes, but anything worst. Stop It.
@@WhoseIAm7 he literally got a beat called Fart he definitely had fun with it
I also laugh and crack a smile over his beats. But that’s because the way he blends sounds and always keeps me on my toes on what’s next. That’s why I smile.
smokin crack
You and your friend must’ve been on drugs 🤡 🤡
I think the major difference between your version and the one Dilla did with Badu is that he showed her how to chop. So the baseline buzz that you don’t hear in their version versus yours is because he made chops and not just a loop. When I first started doing beats, I tried to re-create the stakes is high by de la soul and had similar results but then when I chopped it instead of looped, I learned.
I've always found this use of the Dreamflower sample intriguing, as it came after a prior use in almost the exact same way, in 1999 on the track "Thin" by The Underwolves. The promo landed on my desk in 1999 on Blue (Island) records, before the Erykah track. After Blue closed down the Underwolves album eventually released in 2001 on Jazzanova Compost, which is of course after the Erykah track. But the Dreamflower sample was there in 1999.
More J Dilla? HELL YEAHHH
Always
Your talent is so apparent, as is your love for music. Props to you for succeeding at something that combines your passion and creative talent.
I'll keep tuning in for more of your terrific productions!
Thank you,
👏 🙌🙏
I'm digging your videos brother, thanks for making them. I don't know if anyone has already mentioned, and this is strictly FYI and no kind of dig whatsoever, but that drum intro from Badu's "On & On" is actually "Top Billin'" by Audio Two (Priority Records 1988). Keep up the good work man!
keep producing the content, big things bound to follow, solid video homie
🙏
no way bro...your content is so television material. love it
Thank you 🙏 gotta do it right for this music!
I just discovered this channel yesterday on your D’Angelo video, finished listening to it after work and subscribed. I listened to several more on the way home and your subscriber count jumped up at least a couple hundred in the past 30 minutes
Long story short, you’re about to blow up as long as you’re consistent in quantity because your quality is extraordinary,
Glad to see it 👊🏽
Same here.... I think the D'Angelo's video is doing the trick cos that was the first video that I watched too n it got me to subscribe too.
RIP J DILLA, you will live on through your incredible music.
The reason that short bass note wasn't in there is because it makes the loop seem shorter and keeps it slightly stuck in it's original context.
The brilliance is in the nuances which allow the loop to continue whilst feeling open and as if it isn't repeating monotonously
Channels like this gives me more reason to appreciate every song that I listen to, really thank you!
This is great content but a bit confused by the take that dilla was the hero of the story. Here’s an alternative view:
- the pledge: Erykah wants dilla to produce for her
- the turn: she told this in-demand producer she won’t accept his standard beats, and through a collaborative process she presents a bassline she wants to work with
- the pledge: after dilla does his masterful thing in it (collaboratively, cool take) the song becomes a classic, thanks to Erykah’s musical taste and understanding of her own style
Remember, she picked the sample here. And it was produced fairly simply. (Not saying that’s a bad thing, restraint is good). Erykah was the magician.
Great point, Erykah is obviously adding a ton here! My framing comes primarily from Erykah’s account of it from a Red Bull interview (linked in description) where she describes it as Dilla teaching her how to sample etc. You bring up a great point, I also love this framing. Either way, fantastic song by 2 incredible people
@@diggingthegreats 100% truly they were both creating magic together, but wanted to make the case for Erykah haha
Great video and history lesson. Video and music production are on point. New sub here.
Discovered this channel as a link to a Ramsay Lewis trio cover of summer breeze and I'm hooked. You're doing great work. Makes me wanna dog deep into the Soulquarians catalogue
the greatest videos about music history and sampling on youtube by far
Subbed! Some crazy underrated content on here my man!
This is an incredible video, so well shot recorded, and an amazing script! I'm gonna go listen to this song right now!
As a musician and a producer myself (went to university of Michigan music school) I MORE than fkn appreciate this channel and the history and the stories. WE LIVE FOR THESE STORIES MAN. God dammit this channel needs to have a million subs…..where have I been.
Keep it up with these stories historical accounts for things that have happened regarding our favorite artists. This is a awesome.

As a student of Dilla I really do appreciate this video. I recently co produced a record for Game, "No Man Falls" and I asked myself would he like it and even just a head nod. Anytime I'm flipping samples I think of the greats and I am doing justice. This video was great and I recently got Dilla time in the mail. I peeped the background lol. Salute.
Holy shit good job on that beat!! One of the best beats on that project. May I ask what the sample is?

"Mugician", best description of Dilla I heard! Nice work 👍
Sick video man. Love the beat break down and the history lesson. hip hop needs more of this. Was curious if your fandom extends to any of dooms work? I think the beat off of rhymes like dimes is one of my favorite sample flips. Not a super obscure sample or anything but its used soo well and the way the solo from the original song is used in the outro is friggin *chefs kiss*. But I'd love to hear your opinion on it!
Love Dilla, Love this Channel. Keep up the good work dude!🤝
You my friend are a beast at what you do!!!! Clearly one of my favorite channels on RUclips…
Bro this was fire I keep learning from you
New sub right here .
Having a bass in the background pushed me to sub
But seriously loved this man
You my friend have a bright future. I KNOW this channel is gonna blow up. Just subbed…PLEASE make more Dilla videos!
Jesus Christ how long does all the editing take you lmao, all I can think is how much of a pain in the ass all the graphics are. Good shit!
Sandurz! Just catching these comments - respect man, you’re a legend! And yes, it’s a lot of editing 😂
@@diggingthegreats appreciated 🫡🤝 turns out so good though, you been crushing it with these

My new favorite YT channel, a music channel for music nerds by a music nerd.
Killer video, man 🏆 Great breakdown of Dilla’s genius
The bass in the sample at 3:04 from Tarika Blue's Dreamflower is the melody in a song called Backseat by Ari Lennox and Cozz. It is not listed as a sample but that's the same melody.
this is such an awesome channel, i know you will go places. i would love to see more beat recreations, as i’m a pretty new ableton user this gives me insight into workflow. thank you!

Great work my friend, exceptional.
Amazing and detailed video homie! Subbed!
You should do stakes is high by de la soul 👍
Clad this one popped up on my recommendations. Great work, keep it up 👏🏼🔥
I used an MPC from 2008 to 2017, on both the 3000 and the 2000XL you can see the wave form, you can even zoom in a bit to tighten up chops. It's not all by ear, it's kind of a mix. Funnily enough I moved on to the novation launch pad pro and Ableton which you are using haha
Amazing channel. Love your storytelling abilities. This is what makes your channel!!🚀🔥. Subbed
Dude, you're deepdives are absolutely amazing!! You're doing a great job by digging out stories and facts that would have been left in obscurity otherwise. Thank you so much man, you're very appreciated!
All these years I thought she had a band play that live wow
Your production and presentation is Awesome. I have been binging since Thursday. Thanks keep up the amazing work
You recommended the Dan Charnas book "Dilla Time" a while ago and I can confirm it's a great read. Thank you!
Just earned a new subscriber your storytelling skills and production is A1 ‼️
Dilla was a magician, yeah, but I think you're not giving Erykah enough credit here. She chose the song & loop and it played out nearly exactly as she chose it.
Phenomenal work man. Look forward to seeing your channel blow up!
Can't we also suppose the record and specific track was not pick by just by chance but deliberately chosen by Erika, who knew precisely what part of the track would be a banger ? Erika know here stuff, for sûre
Great breakdown of the process, including the magician parallel. (just subscribed today)
Uohh amazing content, nice ¡¡¡ subbed ¡
Dude I'm addicted to your vids. I'm an ummah and soulquarian Stan, but this song is on the NBA2k soundtrack right meow. The timing is great for the younger generation.
I don’t like your version of how they collaborated. Saying that he was “annoyed “ that she didn’t want a beat already made. Dilla didn’t work with ego. It was a true collaboration between two artists. Rarely, do woman get the opportunity to learn production. He was teaching her for the sake of making something beautiful.
JDilla one of the greatest to ever do it! Great analysis!! It makes you appreciate the greatness of Dilla! Great video!
Making beats with just audio is so much better than with wave forms and drag and drop..... I started in 1998.... So yep, I speak from experience
