- We are on a 14 night Icelandic & Norwegian Fjords Princess cruise. But one of our stops was taking us to Lerwick in the Shetland Islands. Lerwick is the main town and port of the Shetland archipelago, Scotland.
Lerwick is a name with roots in Old Norse and its local descendant, Norn, which was spoken in Shetland until the mid-19th century. The name "Lerwick" means bay of clay. The corresponding Norwegian name is Leirvik, leir meaning clay and vik meaning "bay" or "inlet".
We had big plans to walk around this town to see as many sights as we could. We knew we wanted to visit Commercial Street, Market Cross, Bain's Beach, the Lodberrie, a building dated about 1772 was a place where boats unloaded their goods and sold them on the streets, and the Tolbooth building that sits along the waterfront with a clock tower on top, and finally Fort Charlotte.
Lerwick is a water-shuttle port and we weren't able to get off ship as early as we wanted. And when we finally did, it started to rain. The rain continued off and on interrupting our plans to explore so we opted for a bit of shelter at the Grand Hotel Bar & Lounge... come along with us on our journey.
Such a nice quaint town
