Very few, if any artists in the past decade have impacted culture as much as A$AP Rocky. In the 8 years following his debut mixtape, Rocky has become an icon by contributing to sonic shifts in hip hop and various fashion trends around the globe. I take a look at the Harlem native's upbringing and his ascent to becoming Hip Hop's quintessential Renaissance Man.

Yet I listen to Testing every week because it's so good.
Steven Lowes yeah. But from an objective perspective, you can’t hate that people don’t like the album. It’s very different. As a fan of Rocky I’m not mad that people weren’t feeling it.
Plus it was a bad timing. KSG and other hyped projects got released alongside TESTING and it got overshadowed

Lil Bleach Kanye’s rollout had nothing to do with the bad timing. The bad timing was PUSHA dissing drake on his album that released on the same day rocky did and DRAKE deciding to drop a diss track on Pusha the very NEXT DAY of Rocky’s (and Push’s) release. A lot of people forget that overshadowed everything
Rocky had his big hype 7 years ago, and he’s still hyped. That’s crazy

Live.Love.ASAP is one of the best hip hop records ever. So he'll always been in the convo. That's what happens when you drop actual classic music. The 'forced classics' e.g. Kendrick's material, are disposable and no one really cares about his releases like that.

it took me many replays to start appreciating TESTING
It was the music videos that really got me... After watching them the songs got a whole new sound, Fukk Sleep is a fuckin BOP

I'm 35 been listening to rap my entire life and ASAP Rocky has been the most impactful rapper I've ever heard or seen.
Word? I'm your age and you're putting Rocky above Nas? Jigga? etc? If you're 35 as you claim and being listening to rap your whole life, you remember when "Nas is Like" came out. Rocky's my favorite rapper of the new school hands down, but there are lots of rappers from previous eras that are superior to him. I will say that Live.Love.ASAP is one of my all-time favorite projects, regardless of era.
@@tochiRTA I was never a big fan of Nas or Jay Z, not even really Biggie or any east coast rapper until 50 Cent came out with GRODT. Growing up it was all Dr. Dre and Snoop. 50 Cent and ASAP Rocky have been the most influential rappers in my life.
@@niceshot4563 I have no idea how someone can not be a big fan of any East Coast rapper and be a hip hop fan. The East Coast, NY specifically, invented hip hop and have made the best hip hop by far. But that's another conversation.
I kinda understand what you're saying regarding 50 and ASAP Rocky. I been telling people that ASAP Rocky is the best new rapper on the scene since 50 Cent and people looked at me like I was crazy. Hip hop went through a crazy slump after 50. The only bright spot in terms of 'new' rappers in the 2000s was Sean Price and he wasn't a new rapper - just reinvented himself. The new hyped rappers on the scene: Kanye, Jeezy, TI, Lil Wayne, etc.... Crazy trash. TI can actually rap but he chose to make dumbed-down music his entire career. Rocky came through with sheer charisma and an incredible new style.

@@tochiRTA I only started listening to Mobb Deep, Wu Tang, Jay Z, Nas, Biggie in like 2001 ish. But still to this day, biggest rappers in my life were 50 Cent, Lil Wayne, Gucci, A$AP Rocky in that order. But most of all 50 and A$AP Rocky.

A lot of people hate on testing but honestly I think it was the best hip hop record of last year and in the years to come I think people will look back on it more fondly.
Rocky really is innovative in the way he approaches hip hop music, videos and fashion and out of all the rappers who have come up in the last few years I really think he's gonna stick around longer than a lot of others.

ASAP Rocky inspired me to be a trendsetter. I was the only one in my school at the time with a fashion sense after i started listening to him. Then everyone started to follow my trends, dress like me, listen to the same music as me, do the shit I did....Rocky taught me the way
