How was Mack a sure fire pick? If he was such a can't miss prospect why did 4 teams pass on him? Mack was a small school player and people criticised his level of competition at the university of Buffalo and some didn't think he was worthy of a top 5 pick. Clowney was clearly graded as a better prospect at the time. Mack was also considered too small to play DE at 6"3, prototypical size is like 6'5" like Clowney. Back in 2014 most of Raider Nation wanted Sammy Watkins he was suppose to be the next Julio Jones. So this narrative that he was a can't miss prospect is completely BS, its real easy to say he was surefire now that you have 5 years of stats and hindsight.

That's the only reason John was willing to come out of retirement in the 1st place.... Raiders had a young QB he KNEW was good. He tried for years to get a QB in TB and failed miserably, which is ultimately why he lost his job there. Her knows how difficult it is to find a franchise QB. Now that he has one, who is only 27 years old and just reaching his prime, he's not going to just trade him away for a complete unknown, who will also need developed over the course of several years, and who will most likely not pan out since QB's only have about a 10% success rate, if that. Carr isn't going anywhere man, he's a Raider until he retires.
lol the Raiders D sucked before Gruden got there Paying a pass rusher as much money as he wants make s no sense You don't trade a player like that if it makes financial sense to keep him, here it clearly did not
@deharleyva It means there is no world where he was worth the sorta money he was asking He wanted QB money when he couldn't carry teh D Just because the bears are better doesn't mean they didn't massively overpay. The raiders are* tanking, welcome to American sports, they're not gonna carry a contract like that through a rebuild as he ages. Why would you?
Remember the playoffs Raiders vs Texans. Mack was nowhere against a horrible o-line for the Texans. Clowney was destroying us with a top 2 o-line. I agree you don't trade a player like Mack, but with that cap space and draft picks we got, that could equal Clowney, Earl Thomas, and 2 first rounders for solely Mack.
Mack isn’t even top 10 in sacks. He’s already playing on a good defense in Chicago. Raiders defense was terrible even when they had Mack, so it made since to trade him. Plus they couldn’t afford to pay him and pay other players. I think Mack is overrated and Aaron Donald is better by far... that man leads the league in sacks and he isn’t even an edge rusher plus he gets double teamed literally on every snap. Raiders did the right thing, I think Jon Gruden’s team will be a process just like Philly you have to #TrustTheProcess
Reggie was done dirty. Ppl forget (or just don't know) that when he took over in 2012 we had over $70million in dead cap and didn't have all seven draft picks until 2013. Every contract he gave FA's was structured so that we didn't have to keep them after two years and not owe money. It's hard to draft players when the coaching staff is constantly changing defensive and offensive schemes.
I liked Reggie but the vast majority of his draft picks have been poor to say the least. He is not a scapegoat. He is a great contract guy. Not a great GM.
I did a McKenzie draft pick breakdown for his time in Oakland on a different channel. He smashed 2014 out of the park. Other than that, his picks have underwhelmed almost across the board. The Cooper trade was a win/win. He wasn't a differemce maker in Oakland the last year and a half (with 2 coaching staffs). He goes to another team and is reborn. Good for him and good for both the Cowboys and Raiders. Mack was unfortunate and in my option a mistake to trade. But, Mckenzie had some bright spots, but his moves didn't hit often enough.
He hired Dennis Allen too and had some questionable free agent moves. It's more than just his draft picks which he had an affinity for reaching on players who either had an injury history or were from small schools. He wasn't good at all, outside of the 2014 draft like you said and even that is debatable. Also, with Mack the raiders were never better than 24th in defense. He was a great player but he wasn't going to revamp the defense by himself and that falls on RM again for not surrounding him with ample talent to justify keeping him at that price tag.
Stephen A. Smith said before the 2016 season that Reggie McKenzie should have been fired. You, Stephen A. Smith said McKenzie had not done anything in FA, and his drafts has been hit and miss. Now all of a sudden, you're hurt that McKenzie was let go.
McKenzie should have been fired before the 2016 season but the team did have a winning record that year and that probably bought McKenzie some time with the Del Rio/Carr/Cooper/Beast Mode potential. So in fairness to Stephen A., McKenzie did eventually successfully find good players for the team and I can understand why his opinion has changed some on McKenzie and I can understand why he feels like this is a scapegoat for Grudens decisions.
maztersav thank u brotha, no need to say more.. only one coach in the NFL that is worthy of a contract like that and that is mr bill over in New England..
He was told he was going to be let go at the end of the year. Reggie opted to leave now instead of the end of the year. Why arent they reporting that part. Smh
Because it was a joke offer where he would sit with no say in anything and be blamed for even more of Grudens stupidity. They would not have announced he was almost fired and Gruden would have continued to say he does not make the call on trades and blamed Reggie. Are you people so blind you do not see that?
I'm with you, Stephen A. Normally I disagree with you A LOT lol, but I am with u 100% on this one. McKenzie drafted Carr, Mack and Cooper, signed Michael Crabtree and Jared Cook. That's not a bad team right there. They had a phenomenal 2016 season before Carr's injury. Gruden comes in acting like its his job to fix a dumpster fire, when in reality they already had a solid SOLID roster. McKenzie is a great GM.
The Raiders traded away their best players in Mack and Cooper. It was inexcusable for them to be traded; they would have been 1st place in the AFC West instead of Kansas City. I'm hopeful that Gruden's planning something in next year's draft - just like the Cowboys did in the 1990s.
I don't think they'd be in 1st place, but they would be BETTER on defense that's for sure. The Chiefs have an MVP QB, Carr is NOT anywhere close to being what we thought he would become.
If Miami hadn’t traded up to #3, the Raiders were going to draft Hayden at NUMBER 3 OVERALL!!! Let that sink in. Reggie had one good draft, and couldn’t resign the best player from it. 15,16,17 drafts terrible. That’s why the raiders are a mess and he’s fired
Reggie did nothing anyone else would have done with the 2014 mess. The only draft hits he had was obvious choices. Why isn’t Steven Smith talking about all the draft misses?
The raiders are stupid. There is only one coach active today that has proven he deserves that type of contract and it’s Bill Belicheck. There is no way in hell Jon gruden earns that salary over the next 10 years. He will continue to struggle. Reminds me of Phil Jackson going to the knicks. This is just a money grab.
I was thinking the same thing that was said at the 5 min mark , if you release the guy at the start of the season, or release the guy at the end of the season that is one thing ....but when you release gm's .....or coaches during the season that says something different.

Reggie also got us out of cap hell so the nation has nothing but love for reggie. Also this video forgot to mention that reggie had the option to finish the rest of the season but he opted not to.
The reason he was let go, the reason John Gruden even got the job was because Reggie did a horrible drafting job the last few years. He gave Carr a huge extension earlier than he had to before he saw how he looked post injury, he let go of Murray, he gave out questionable contracts to veterans. The reason they traded Mack was because apparently they couldnt afford to pay him what he wanted, and traded Cooper because they didn't want to pay elite reciever money to him. ( Good luck with that Dallas)
@pep 7200 Have you seen the rest of the comments regarding her though? People talk about her needing to go make sandwiches instead, and stay in the kitchen lol. Your views are fair. I actually agree with you on that.
Tony Bergstorm, DJ Hayden, Menalik Watson, Mario Edwards, Sio Moore, Derek Carr (still up in the air), Clive Walford, Jihad FREAKING Ward, Shilique Calhoun, Obi Melifonwu, Eddie Vanderdose, and those are just the top 1st, 2nd, and or 3rd round picks throughout his tenure as the GM since 2013, not mentioning the picks after them. No thank you, and anyone who believes he should be given props for cutting all the players that had high cap and going 2-14 the following season are crazy. He hired Coach and Allen and Del Rios who were trash, and would do draft day trades and never receive proper compensation in return. I hope he goes to the Cowboys, Broncos, Chargers, Chiefs, Patriots, or the 9ners so that he can mess them up too. Mack is the only legit player drafted, Cooper is debatable as he was just becoming a body on the field with minimal production with the previous and current coaching staff. Sure he's playing well these past few games, but he's inconsistent and dropped too many balls while a Raider. Let Gruden build the team his way, and then critique it, not after one season were he had to work with the pathetic team McKenzie built with no depth what-so-ever.
Donae Morrow you can't fire the owner because at the end of the day Mark Davis could have overridden that Khalil Mack trade do you think a trade like that happens under Al Davis's watch I don't think so

@X Girl and the next year? If anything, we got better players around them and they got even worse. Those two didn't want to stick around. Didnt make a difference. 12-4 was a fluke
@@mattguz55 ok you dont know football because 12 -4 is not a fluke. And as far as the next season the team was riddled with injury so ideally this would be the season to get back to the playoffs but the signed gruden.
Exactly. Why would he? I wouldn't have stayed either. My point was just he knew already he wasn't in the future plans and made the choice himself. Stephen A acts like the Raiders just kicked him out before the season ended making him the scapegoat when that's not the case.
And your wrong. He was given the chance to stay with no say and to take the hear for more of Grudens stupid trades and moves. I am sure he should not be faulted for having a little pride and self respect considering the was the only one in that forsaken place with any idea of how to run a team. Now Gruden can go get Bruce Allen who is another idiot that has destroyed Washington to finish the job in Oakland.
This franchise seems to blame everyone but themselves. Del Rio fired Bill Musgrave as the OC when they didn't make the playoffs after making it the year before. Mark Davis fires Del Rio. Now, Reggie McKenzie will be next on the chopping block. A guy that drafted Mack and Cooper. But this regression all started with the firing of Musgrave. Cooper in his rookie year went for 1070 yards and 6 TDs. In his second year, he went for 1153 yards and 5 TDs. Then they fired Musgrave and he went for 680 yards and 7 TDs. Through 6 games with the Cowboys, he already has 642 yards and 6 TDs. Greg Olson has no idea what he's doing with the offense.
Some color people need to stop playing the race card everytime. How can you get over the “race issues” with that mentality? I know racism exists, but many times that card is overplayed. Especially by Stephen A.
Reggie had a tough time drafting consistently. Carr, Mack and Cooper were his best picks, Carr being his only bargain as he was a 2nd round pick (albeit a very early second rounder). Gruden has an idea about his offense so I understand wanting to control that half of the personnel department but I certainly hope we can find a “GM” who has an eye for defensive talent.
By the way as soon as Gruden got hired i knew this whole deal was going to go down . Wasnt surprised at all . And i also know this will all be fixed and we will be winning AGIAN real soon . Like year 3
Scape Goat??? Just stop it with the non sense. Reggie didn't get fired because of Raiders bad season. Reggie got fired because Jon Gurden wanted his own guy and I can't blame him. Only difference between me and Gurden is I would have fired Reggie the first day I walk into the offices. Everyone wants their guys, that they hired around them.
.. I’m be real with y’all they try this before giving Jon gruden power, he falls in love with too many players, and can’t get rid of them when it they’re time too go, or draft a player too early or it’s just terrible. They try this before, and it’s just gonna be same way it was
Stephen A. missed a crucial detail of this which is that McKenzie was given the option to stay until the end of the season (per Ian Rapaport) but he declined.
Jon Gruden (and Mark Davis) made me abandon the team I rooted for all my life. There is no joy in being a Raiders fan, its an existence devoid of hope.
Reggie could've drafted better players but the players have to win or the coaches and GM get fired. Its Jon Gruden's show so if it doesn't work out he can't blame nobody but himself
Steven A Smith heavily criticized Reggie McKenzie on numerous occasions. He’s also salty that Gruden’s Raiders beat his Steelers. Now he’s flip flopping on McKenzie now. Typical media. 😂🙄🤷♂️🤦♂️
Derek Carr and Gabe Jackson were the only 2nd rounders or worse that ever worked out for Reggie. Not hard to score on talent when you consistently have top 3-15 1st round picks.
if you check the records of GMs throughout the league they would be about the same. The NFL draft is a CRAP shoot, YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT'S GONNA HAPPEN because football players are HUMAN and there's a WIDE gap between the NCAA and NFL football. There are countless high draft picks that NEVER play at the level they were drafted. There are countless stories of low and/or undrafted players being GREAT. When GMs get lucky we call them GENIUS and when players don't pan out we want them FIRED. SMH
Reggie has been a below average GM at best throughout his tenure, so it's difficult for me to consider him a scapegoat. If anything Mark should have gotten rid of him a long time ago. We've been "re-building" since 2012 so you can't blame Al Davis forever. By this point we should have had a stronger foundation than 2 good draft picks to work on. He hired fucking Dennis Allen, which ended up being a disaster. Yes, eventually his other guy Del Rio had us close to winning the AFC West for ONE YEAR but then Jack went and screwed it up by firing Bill Musgrave and keeping KNJ. We went 6-10 the next season under him. That recent regression was under Reggie's watch, not Jon's. Revisionist history doesn't work for people who actually follow the team. In Reggie's first year the team went from 8-8 the previous season to 4-12. Right now Gruden is in that same process of cleaning house, which was to be expected by any realistic fan. He was given all that money to be in control and that's exactly what he's doing. It's not about there being any scapegoats. At least now we're stocked with draft picks and we've got a new stadium being built. This season is nothing compared to the disappointments Raider fans have suffered before. Amari didn't have the heart, impact or statistics needed while he was playing in Oakland. It was like Randy Moss all over again; we're better off getting rid of "me" guys like that. He's playing good in Dallas because they're generally in a better position and he's trying to secure a big veteran contract. Once he gets paid we'll see how long his on-field success lasts. Say what you want about the Gruden deal but I'm fine with them NOT paying superstar money to a 27 year old non-quarterback, especially when the team isn't ready for the playoffs. Have fun with Mack while it lasts Chicago. The Bears looked pretty good back in 2006 too but they needed more than Urlacher to win against Peyton in the Super Bowl.

Browns take Johnny Manziel? And Mack was a boom or bust pick, he wasn't a guarantee. Bottom line, McKenzie took over a SUPER HORRIBLE ORGANIZATION that had one of the worst rosters and salary cap for a reason and he FIXED THAT.
I don't care if Raiders had got BB for GM, it would've taken at least 3 years to fix that mess up in Oak-town.
Amari Cooper did not want to be in Oakland anymore and was showing it on the field so why keep him
Maybe he didnt want to be there because of the disrespect from the coach, i mean according to you gruden fans none of the core that took you guys. To the plays wanted to be there because they wanted a new contract or they they wantedto be treated with respect etc.
Raider thank you. Cowboys 4 life. COOPER😀

I don't blame him cause Carr never looked his way at all. Top 5 in separation on routes every year and got no targets most of the time he was open

This was one of the most “BOGUS” moves ever in sports! Been a Raider fan for years!! Finally got a GM who brought stars to the Raiders, & we trade them away! What does this say to any other high caliber player(s) who may be thinking about coming to Vegas! Lost a lot of respect for “Chucky”!!!
As a raiders fan , we all knew, that McKenzie was out at the end of the season... But too let him go with 3 games left, is bad karma.. I totally agree with Steven A..
Do you know how many draft picks Reggie has busted on? Mack was his only good pick and he was a surefire pick. Like cmon He had to go.
So Derek Carr and Gabe Jackson are scrubs?
Plus Amari Cooper
How was Mack a sure fire pick? If he was such a can't miss prospect why did 4 teams pass on him?
Mack was a small school player and people criticised his level of competition at the university of Buffalo and some didn't think he was worthy of a top 5 pick. Clowney was clearly graded as a better prospect at the time. Mack was also considered too small to play DE at 6"3, prototypical size is like 6'5" like Clowney.
Back in 2014 most of Raider Nation wanted Sammy Watkins he was suppose to be the next Julio Jones.
So this narrative that he was a can't miss prospect is completely BS, its real easy to say he was surefire now that you have 5 years of stats and hindsight.
daniel blazing borruel Amari cooper is a scrub compared to Julio, AB,Theilen Diggs, Hill,

All do respect to Mr. Reggie McKenzie, He always got poor compensation when trading picks during a draft. He always gave up way more than what was needed. Also he always drafted injured players and under sized players. I'm glad he's gone.
Who did he draft that was undersized? The only guy you can make a case for is Karl Joseph. Other than that, who?

Gruden is really responsible for the success of Chicago and Dallas. I think he should get executive of the year for that.
He was garbage as a GM..
As a black man, I hate to see one of the few black GMs in the league get fired, But he was garbage at the job and the whole team is a dumpster fire..

Derek Carr is playing at an elite level, theres literally no chance Gruden trades him.
@@jessegardner134 its not HIS guy. He'll build him up call plays that benefits him to stat pad. So that when its time to trade him they'll get something good while at the same time tanking to get higher draft picks
@@greenkidd529 Carr is absolutely Grudens guy. He went through Grudens QB camp and John was especially enamored with Carr's accuracy.
Lololol no chance. Talking heads have no clue. They dont even watch the games or press conferences
Carr is the raiders just needs time to pass. But with that being said no raider fan ever thought we'd get rid of mack
Mack in opinion is the best defensive player in the NFL.....you don't trade a player of that caliber.
lol the Raiders D sucked before Gruden got there
Paying a pass rusher as much money as he wants make s no sense
You don't trade a player like that if it makes financial sense to keep him, here it clearly did not
@deharleyva It means there is no world where he was worth the sorta money he was asking
He wanted QB money when he couldn't carry teh D
Just because the bears are better doesn't mean they didn't massively overpay.
SAS made this about race 😂😂
Adam Leon it is about race
Studies show that race plays a significant role in how people are treated especially in the NFL.
phys.org/news/2016-01-racial-bias-nfl.html
It is
Stephen Race Smith. lol
This country is about race. Slave traders made it about race. Its in the dna of the USA.
I liked Reggie but the vast majority of his draft picks have been poor to say the least. He is not a scapegoat. He is a great contract guy. Not a great GM.
He should've done better!
Relax .... it was just a changing of the guard .
SAS found a way to throw the race card in there
Dominic p where is this race card? I want to obtain one.
Why is it always a race thing , McKenzie didn’t do his job I could’ve picked Mack and cooper
Stephen A was calling for Reggie to get fire few years ago
Kenny Semedo Facts!!!!
Accepting $100 million as opposed to taking less and put that money back into the team is simply nothing more than a greedy & selfish mindset.

Didnt Davis say Gruden didnt want to get rid of Mack. He said it was all his idea.
He was told he was going to be let go at the end of the year. Reggie opted to leave now instead of the end of the year. Why arent they reporting that part. Smh
Nikko Ramirez instructions lmao
Because it was a joke offer where he would sit with no say in anything and be blamed for even more of Grudens stupidity. They would not have announced he was almost fired and Gruden would have continued to say he does not make the call on trades and blamed Reggie. Are you people so blind you do not see that?
Lol I know Stephen A going off when he acknowledges a guy positively first
I'm with you, Stephen A.
"scapegoating" ESPN's new favorite term
The whole world saw this coming. He should have resigned after they dealt Cooper
Very good arguments from all parties...
It better be a method to this madness
The Raiders traded away their best players in Mack and Cooper. It was inexcusable for them to be traded; they would have been 1st place in the AFC West instead of Kansas City. I'm hopeful that Gruden's planning something in next year's draft - just like the Cowboys did in the 1990s.
I don't think they'd be in 1st place, but they would be BETTER on defense that's for sure. The Chiefs have an MVP QB, Carr is NOT anywhere close to being what we thought he would become.
We had em both & not once did we finish in first place in our division even when we went 12-4 bruh
Steven A is to REAL!
Trust me when the league players see the new stadium in Vegas they're going to want to go to play for Gruden in the Raiders in Vegas
Reggie McKenzie had awful draft picks in his tenure there in Oakland did anybody forget the number one draft pick with DJ Hayden
raider tyrone but Mack and Amari Cooper erase the DJ Hayden pick Carr destroyed that pick
If Miami hadn’t traded up to #3, the Raiders were going to draft Hayden at NUMBER 3 OVERALL!!! Let that sink in. Reggie had one good draft, and couldn’t resign the best player from it. 15,16,17 drafts terrible. That’s why the raiders are a mess and he’s fired
mike wolfe Karl Joseph is a good safety to replace Hayden so again he’s a good gm I won’t say great but good yes he’s that
Reggie did nothing anyone else would have done with the 2014 mess.
2:16 says otherwise There is clearly people who draft better than Reggie.
They didn't like the return he got for the Mack trade, and his trade down with ARZ this year for a 3rd and 5th round pick only?? really?
In 3 years people are going to be saying what a genius Jon Gruden is with all the high draft picks they will will have over the next 3 years.

Reggie McKenzie was trash🗑 as a executive with the Raiders. I'm surprised he's not hammering down the race card as he usually does.

Stephen A Smith is still butthurt the Steelers lost to the Raiders LOL
The reason he was let go, the reason John Gruden even got the job was because Reggie did a horrible drafting job the last few years. He gave Carr a huge extension earlier than he had to before he saw how he looked post injury, he let go of Murray, he gave out questionable contracts to veterans. The reason they traded Mack was because apparently they couldnt afford to pay him what he wanted, and traded Cooper because they didn't want to pay elite reciever money to him.

@@mattguz55 ok you dont know football because 12 -4 is not a fluke. And as far as the next season the team was riddled with injury so ideally this would be the season to get back to the playoffs but the signed gruden.
Wrong. Reggie chose to not finish the season himself. Stephan always trying to create a narrative
why would he want to stay if he knew he was getting fired?
Lawrence Stacy Adams “you’re”
Gruden should be fired for letting go of Kahlil Mac the Mack daddy
Reggie’s been taking so much flak from all the coach’s mess!! 🤦🏾♂️
Some color people need to stop playing the race card everytime. How can you get over the “race issues” with that mentality? I know racism exists, but many times that card is overplayed. Especially by Stephen A.
BeefohChicken of course a white person who would say this
@@johnclowney7987 And? I'm Hispanic and the race card gets annoying a lot.
Hispanics were never slaves, bought or sold.
I think Gruden got something up his sleeve

Scape Goat??? Just stop it with the non sense. Reggie didn't get fired because of Raiders bad season. Reggie got fired because Jon Gurden wanted his own guy and I can't blame him. Only difference between me and Gurden is I would have fired Reggie the first day I walk into the offices. Everyone wants their guys, that they hired around them.
.. I’m be real with y’all they try this before giving Jon gruden power, he falls in love with too many players, and can’t get rid of them when it they’re time too go, or draft a player too early or it’s just terrible. They try this before, and it’s just gonna be same way it was
Stephen was 100% correct, watching this 5 years later.
Stephen A. missed a crucial detail of this which is that McKenzie was given the option to stay until the end of the season (per Ian Rapaport) but he declined.

Derek Carr and Gabe Jackson were the only 2nd rounders or worse that ever worked out for Reggie. Not hard to score on talent when you consistently have top 3-15 1st round picks.
That being said I loved Reggie. But he had more to do with the Mack and Cooper trades than people think.
if you check the records of GMs throughout the league they would be about the same. SMH
Two words: Mike Mayock
As a Dolphins fan, the Raiders are about to become Patriots West.
THE RAIDERS JUST WON A BIG GAME! The Raiders are on the REBOUND.
