Turning All Might into a world-weary hero who's secretly sick of the job under the muscles and smile could have been an interesting characterization to contrast with Deku's earnest willingness to be a hero. He could have picked the kid to be successor because he's thinking, "Finally, I can get out of this," but he also knows, "I still have the obligation to leave things right and train him properly as the new Symbol of Peace, or else we're all screwed." But then, when he sees the kid caring for him as a good person instead of worshipping him as a mere celebrity or pillar of physical strength, and actually pushing so hard he's literally breaking himself, All Might is reminded how much he always loved being a hero, and his fight with All for One becomes his defining "Quirk or not, I will always be a hero" moment.
