I am in Turkey where car repairs can be ridiculously expensive. The sun visor on my 2010 Camry fell in front of my face the other day while driving in heavy traffic! And when I looked at prices for the part alone it is $50-150 USD. I will be repairing it myself today. Thank you for sharing!!
Wow, just finished both sides. Looks good and wife is happy. A friend of mine who's the store manager of an auto parts told me that he has seen so many owners of this model Camry come in his store seeking an alternative solution to this problem. It's sad that Toyota is ignoring the voices of many of its car owners. That's sad. Thanks for the tutorial, Peter.
Got the same issue with my 2008 Camry. Called my dealer and looks like I will get it fixed for free. Thanks for all your comments that helped me address the issue.
On vacation when the visor in the '08 Camry broke and would stay in the down position. Followed the directions to take the visor off and made the repairs. Didn't have a drill or screws handy but used Guerrilla Tape to mend the two pieces together. After 4 days the visor is fully functional and will get this to the dealer for the recall ASAP. Good emergency fix. I keep a small roll of Guerrilla Tape in the car and it came through on this emergency! Think Apollo 13! Thanks for the video.
Thanks for your video. My wife’s 2008 Camry had the same issue. Her mechanic told her he could not fix it and would contact the dealership to order her one. I said “Nope, the fix is on You Tube somewhere”, and here it is. One hour and an old soup can bracket and it’s fixed. Not pretty but pretty functional. Maybe I’ll pick up a used one at some point but for now it works and wasn’t $125 + labor. Thanks Again 👍🏼
my mom made an appt. at the dealership citing the recall. When i brought it in for her earlier this week, the Service guy told me the car didn't fall under Toyota's "Special Policy Bulletin" since her Camry was a Japan model. You'd think they could've mentioned this BEFORE i brought her car in (& saved me the time & hassle). Thanks for posting this, peterlution, i'm gonna have to try it out.
This is EXACTLY what happened to me and EXACTLY what mine looks like!!! Crazy!!! Called Toyota--- $86 for new visor without install! CRAZY!!! Thank you for this post. I will have my hubby get to work ASAP! No visor is hazardous in this sunny weather! Thanks again!
great idea. thanks for sharing. I made the same repair using nylon zip ties. I cut the holes in the plastic big enough to push the tie buckle into them to make as flush surface as possible.
Thanks for the video. My wife's broke a few weeks ago and even though it didn't come completely apart, I added a metal strap per your instructions and it is now usable again.
Thanks for this. Our 2008 Toyota Camry driver's side visor just "fell" into my line of sight while driving. I was just advised by the local Toyota dealership here in Ontario, Canada that it will cost $165.00 just for the part. When I asked if he was aware of any other cases, he told me no. I was concerned about the safety aspect, so I am glad Google led me to your video and comments.
Great repair tip, it worked just fine...until I lost a clip. Called Toyota to order a $5 clip and learned there is a new extended warranty for the Visor problem ! They told me seven years no milage limit !! So our 2010 SE will be getting a free replacement, I hope I get to keep the one I repaired for a spare. Thanks for the DIY tip !
Thank you for this video! The music was perfect!♡ This has happened to me *TWICE* with my 2008 Camry. Toyota literally doesn't care that this is a *SAFETY* issue, not just some minor inconvenience. The first time this happened it was less than 60 days after I bought the car (new). I was driving home from work in crazy freeway traffic during rush hour. The sun was in my face, so I swung the visor down, and it literally fell off the hinge onto my dashboard. With the sun in my face I could barely see anything ahead! Luckily I was able to pull off at the next exit and rigged up a temporary fix (using the duck tape my Dad insists I keep in my glove compartment -- yay, Dad!). I got the visor replaced under the warranty because it was so soon after I bought the car. But then it happened *again* a few years later, after my warranty expired -- again while I was driving in heavy traffic. Toyota knows this is a problem, but they keep selling defective replacements, too! I've rigged up something temporary with rubber bands that works ok, but it's not the safest way to be driving. I'll try this repair you described. Even if I can't repair the visor itself, I can at least purchase a new visor and now I know how install it myself for $0 labor. :-)
Toyota might have acknowledged the problem, but they still haven't fixed it. My 2010 Toyota Camry did this yesterday and now it has to be fixed. Thanks for posting the video!
Thank you for this! Well done and great music! I called a Toyota dealer and they wanted $124, then I found your video, showed it to my husband and he's going to use your method to try and fix it. Sincerely, Another Happy Wife to be!! 4124
Thanks for sharing! I will be trying this repair soon! Also FYI another ridiculously high service repair is replacing the cabin air filter in a Camry. Parts and labor were quoted anywhere from 75-100 but I replaced it myself for less than $15 (ordered the part online) and it took less than 5 minutes! I found the video on RUclips as well.
This happened two weeks ago on the passenger side of my 07 Camry. It's slowly happening to the drivers side. Thanks for the video. Gives me hope I can fix this!!
'09 Camry owner. I pulled back the fabric and put some good 'ol duct tape on mine and its as good as new. It's been holding for a while. I've just been procrastinating having it repaired. I received the recall notice in the mail last year.
Great! You ave really a handyman. It seems like Toyota finally recognized it as their design/manufacturing flaw and offer free replacement to their customers.
Thanks man! What year is your car? They admitted 07-11 year model had such problem. They will replace a new one without charge, regardless the warranty coverage. They just stop short to issue a recall.
Nice job, Peter! Excellent tutorial. I'll need to look at the video one more time to figure out exactly what the problem was and how it was fixed. I'm not good at fixing things, not even good at recognizing the problem. Oh, how I wish you still live across the street! - Frank
I have a 2007 Camry with a the same visor problem. I am on my third replacement. Toyota should own this visor problem and recall and replace this visor. Since this irritate you during driving, this will leave a bad taste and bad reputation with the Toyota Owners
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING THIS VIDEO!!!! Worked great on my 2008 Nissan Versa. As you probably figured out, it is no wonder these things break, being PLASTIC!!! Saved me a bunch of money. :)
It's good to see there are still some handy people out there, nice job. Toyota has to come clean with this issue the same thing happened to my 2008 hybrid Camry.
😂😂😂 This is si great! Live the music selection😁 It's a problem and Toyota failed to correct as they continued production. The 2010 XLE both passenger and driver gave way.😡 Back to back. I'm needing to replace both. Thanks! This was excellent.
This video LOL!!! My parents 09 Camry did this on the drivers side, my 07 Camry did this on the drivers side as well and I had Toyota fix it for me for $120 when I was in grad school (😭) and now the 07 Camry passenger side is doing this as well and it’s such a nuisance!!! Thank you so much for this video.
Great to hear about your solution! Just got a notice from Toyota today: Customer Support Program (CSP) ZTT - Certain 2007 to 2011 Model Year Camry and Camry Hybrid Vehicles - Warranty Enhancement Notice for Sun Visor Assembly and Sun Visor Bracket. I will ask them to install new one next time in service.
Thank you. I used this guide to replace my driver's side one about a year or two ago and just used it again to replace the passenger side one about 5 minutes ago.
Thank you for the video! So helpful. I have an 2011 camry. No extended warranty and manufacture warranty ran out. I'll be giving this a try this weekend..
FABULOUS MUSIC FROM HANDEL,!! You might remind those who don't appreciate music other than rap, they should turn their volume down or...use their mute button!!! More Handel please!!! And again, thank you to a cultured person!!!!!!! ........and perfectly timed to the end of the video!
Sorry about the music. I used to use a much softer music but RUclips said I had copyright issue. So I had to select one form their stock music. I am glad that it helped. Cheers!
Thanks for sharing. Both of my sun visors on my 07 Camry broke. Toyota fixed the driver side for free because they eventually did do a recall but I'm going to attempt to do the driver side following your video!!!!
My 2008 driver's side visor went out yesterday. No longer within 7 year dealer replacement window. Used this approach to repair. Used 3 zip ties instead of screws. Plastic is thick enough to handle the tension/stress long term. Debated whether to sew or glue fabric back around seam.
They have a 7-year limit? It sucks. It was their design flaw and they should fix it no matter how old the car is. Yeah, zip tie should work too. Just the join of two plastic covers failed. It needs something to hold them back and have grip to that metal piece.
Drill 3 holes in the plastic and insert the zip ties in the holes and get them as tight as you can around the shaft and plastic part to hold you visor in place. Glued the fabric around the repair as neatly as possible.
Thanks for some ideas. I have a 1999 camry with a sagging driver side sun visor. The assembly for the 99 is a little different than the later shown in the video. However I remover the plastic cover, then removed two screws and the visor was free from the car and in my hands. Then I gently pulled out the post and wrapped it in a thin layer of duct tape. Then I replaced the post into the visor. You could feel that the post was tighter going back in than it was coming out. Then I rehung the visor with the original two screws and wallah, my visor is tighter and no longer swinging in the drivers face.
And the McGyver award goes to ...... Peterlution! Nice fix and thanks for sharing. My dealer in AZ wants $71+tax and I was going to try and McGyver it myself. Was thinking of sewing industrial Velcro to the visor and headliner but that would look crappy. Cheers
thanks so much, going to try it this weekend. I had gotten my drivers side replaced since it completely fell off, they sold the car to me like that didn't realize it till I drove off the lot. They didn't fix the passenger side since it wasn't broken at the time. Now Just a few weeks ago as I was driving it did it. Asked dealership to fix it under warranty they said it's only covered 7years from the 1st owners purchase date, 109 to fix. going to try to do it my self for $1.00😉 Thanks again
Thanks to this video, today I am not a sucker today for my money. Those Toyota shops are worse than an attorney!! They will squeeze you with a smile on their faces...
I am happy for you! Toyota should pay the price, either our effort and time or people paid to the dealership or repair shop. It's certainly their design flaw. They either designed the plastic too thin or used cheap material. They should maintain their reputation.
Thanks for subscribing my channel! No. The aluminum strip just wrap around the black steel part. The screw closes the loop without touching the metal parts. Two reasons for not drilling through the black steel part: 1) it's very hard to drill through the metal. 2) The metal has to be able to rotate. The purpose of the aluminum strip is to reenforce the crappy plastic.
YOU are a genious!!! Thank you so much for your input. I was looking to spend over $150 for used visors. Soooo glad I came across your video. Really ingenious! :-)
I'm assuming your camry didn't have wires attached to the sun visor for the vanity mirror because I didn't see it in the video. If it did however, do you know to unhook the wire? Right now, I can't completely take the whole sun visor down because the wire is attached and holding it in.
No. 08 Camry is not that fancy. When your car has light on the visor, I think you may find a connector between the body and the visor. Please take this video as reference: ruclips.net/video/HARC_SyGo08/видео.html
4/24/14 I called my local dealership and they confirmed there is a known issue with the Camry sun visors so Toyota has enhanced the warranty, extending it 7 years for the sun visor and your VIN has to fall within a certain range. I gave them my VIN and fortunately they said mine is covered!!! Their parts dept. confirmed they have it in stock (Part #: 04002-30706-B0) and I'm going in this afternoon to have it replaced. Mine broke yesterday. Thanks for this video though! It was very helpful but see if your dealership will do it for free.
I'll have to look to see if this is the issue with my visor on my 2008 camry also, thanks for the video. Creative note: your scrolling text makes it hard to see the pics. I suggest adding small paragraphs of text below the images, not over.
Hey there, thanks! I had viewed many videos to try and fix my 2011 Cam Hybrid visor. I ended up buying a metal plate, with much difficulty, wrapping it around and forcefully trying to line up metal screws to go through to the other side. I started more medially (towards re-view mirror) with my screw. I got it to match and it held my plate, however, where you placed your screw- I was unable to get the same length thru #6 1.5". So I ended up just leaving my one screw in and it works. Next, I used stitch removing tool to slide the material back under the mirror after I sewed back the material on top. Looks pretty good. Lastly, of course it is 100 deg out and noon- I tried for about 15 min to get back into "socket", but those damn black fasteners are not playing nice. So I will try again this evening. My question to you- did your mirror light work after this? Possibly, your 2008 doesn't have a light and I may have a problem because I have more pieces to try and fit together. Anyways- thanks for this!
No. My 2008 does not have light on the visor. I might make it a bit trickier, but I think just be a bit more careful should do. Make sure don't cut the wires. Good luck!
Yes, you have to take down those metal clips. They are the fasteners holding up the swing arm. When you install them back, push the seating in first, then the metal clips, finally the plastic insert to secure the metal clips. Hope this helps. Cheers!
Totally agree. In the past 26 years I have own 12 cars, range from Chevette to Audi, up to 13-year-old, this is the only car has this common problem and it was only 3-year-old. It certainly should be recalled by Toyota.
It was about 50K miles. Please look at the window reminder sticker at 1:40. It says next oil change 53,600. They suggest to change oil every 5K miles, so 50K is a fair estimate. My 2004 Highlander now is 10 years old and no visor problem. I was told 2007 -2010 year models are affected. Not sure they fixed the design in 2011 and forward. Hope they did and won't have the hassle. Good luck!
I have a 2010 camry which this happened to but having a tough time following this video. No man around to help, Dealership wanted $120. + labor to fix...crazy. As one person mentioned the scrolling text makes it hard to see exactly what your talking about. On another note I did replace the cabin air filter and wipers by myself.
@jafar115 Do you mean the black metal bracket on about 1:20? It's made of hard steel and not easy to build. I will recommend to find a replacement from a junk yard (used auto parts) near by.
This happened to both of my wife's visors within a couple of months. I signed the petition, called Toyota several times, and reported it to NHTSA. Nothing has happened to rectify the problem. It is definitely a safety issue because it blocks your vision while driving. Toyota once told me to pay for it, send it to corporate, and they would reimburse. When I asked for that in writing, they refused. I didn't fall for that one. I've search for solutions other than paying $215 per visor and ran acro
So the reason the visor no longer holds up (or down or any position) in place is because the plastic case no longer holds on to the tabs on the hinge? And the fix was to make the plastic visor part "hug" the hinger, correct? Thanks.
I tried velcro at first, it wouldnt hold at all, would not stick to cloth. I looked in my warranty book and found a letter that I received some time ago and in the letter it states Toyota has extended the warranty on sun visors, I took my car into the Dealer and didn't tell them I had the letter, however after the replacement was made, the service tech. said "No Charge". I am happy I didn't have to take it up with management.
I did the fix for a 2011 Camry. used a couple of two inch mending plates and #8,inch long bolts and used the grandkids glue gun to seal the top. l guess there's some kind of recall on 2006 to 2011 Camry's. I will tell the person I did the work to call Toyota directly. I think she called the dealer but they said sorry. good fix. thanks
They never recall. However they offered free repair for certain year models. The program lasted couple years and now they will not repair for free. I am not happy about how they handle this quality issue.
Yep! Same here with my '07 Camry. I had to use Velcro for a while. But the glue kept giving up and the visor fell in my face while driving, again and again and again! It drove me nuts.
Peter, this just happened to me today. so frustrating! anyways where could i get the aluminum strip from and what exactly is it called? im a newbie when it comes this type of handwork....

You are welcome! Cheers!
my mom made an appt. at the dealership citing the recall.
We did the zip tie method and worked. Thanks for the idea!

With this video's soundtrack playing in my mind I rapidly fixed my wife's car using the same technique. Thanks very much for posting, was a big help
Hallelujah! :-)

Bravo! Will be doing the same on a customer's Nissan 200SX. The music is beautiful. Kudos to you and your son. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you. I used this guide to replace my driver's side one about a year or two ago and just used it again to replace the passenger side one about 5 minutes ago.
Thank you Peter! My Toyota Camry 2008 sun visor just fell off the exact same way. I will try to fix it using your method!
Excellent tutorial, my wife will be very pleased once I get this done.
Yeah, it's priceless! :)
Thanks, the one on the passenger side did the same thing on my son's 2008. I appreciate your post.
It's my pleasure to hear that. Yeah, the usage driver side is greater but the passenger side should have the same potential. Thanks for the feedback.
Worked like a charm on my 2012 Tacoma that had the same issue on the driver side! Excellent video! 👍🏼
Hooray! I can't believe model year 2010 still have that problem. Same thing, about 2 years. :( Thanks for your feedback. Cheers!
Thank you for the video! So helpful. I have an 2011 camry. No extended warranty and manufacture warranty ran out. I'll be giving this a try this weekend..
Thank you for the video. I got my son's 2007 Camry fixed. Thanks again!!!

Brilliant. Thanks for taking the time to share your idea. I had the same wife and visor issue!
Ha ha! You are funny man. Thanks and good luck!

The exact same thing happened to my sister's 2011 campy car. Thank you for your great instructions!
You would be surprised at how loud and annoying the music is but never the less, the video helped me a bit.
Sorry about the music. I used to use a much softer music but RUclips said I had copyright issue. So I had to select one form their stock music. I am glad that it helped. Cheers!

That's something I might try on my 1994 Camry. Thank you for that alternative suggestion.
same problem on my toyota camry 2008 model.... thanks to this i can fix my sun visor now...
Thanks! Way to go!
Thanks for the DIY. Fixed our 09 Camry!
Hooray!
Awesome! Thank you!
I couldn't find the metal piece at Lowe's so I used two (door) strike plates from the lock section
+Jeffrey Myers That's great! Thanks for the feedback. Cheers!
this just happened to my car last week, my dad called the dealership and they're charging $152 to fix it. I knew I could find a less expensive way.
And the McGyver award goes to ...... Peterlution! Nice fix and thanks for sharing. My dealer in AZ wants $71+tax and I was going to try and McGyver it myself. Was thinking of sewing industrial Velcro to the visor and headliner but that would look crappy. Cheers
Wow! I am flattered! I am glad that worked out for you. Cheers!
I am glad that you noticed that. I did not pay attention to the sticker when I took pictures, but I found that was informative when I edited my video.
thanks so much, going to try it this weekend.
Glad to hear that. But some of the viewers said their dealership refuse to handle the situation. Maybe they are not in the US, such as Canada?
Thanks to this video, today I am not a sucker today for my money. Those Toyota shops are worse than an attorney!! They will squeeze you with a smile on their faces...
I am happy for you! Toyota should pay the price, either our effort and time or people paid to the dealership or repair shop. It's certainly their design flaw. They either designed the plastic too thin or used cheap material. They should maintain their reputation.
I had exactly the same problem a couple of weeks ago. The Toyota Service manager appealed for me and replaced the sun visor for free today.
Toyota has a recall for the last 7 years models and will replace visors for free. I got mine replaced after I saw this video.
Thanks, this seems easy enough to give it a try before paying the dealer pricey labor cost
My local Toyota Dealership in San Jose, CA just confirmed this sun visor problem after looking up my Camry VIN#...free appt set up!
Warranty has expired. Also does not apply to passenger side where I had my problem
My visor broke today :( Gonna try your DIY technic this weekend. Toyota should have recalled this and fixed it for us.
Thank you for sharing this! Gave me a good idea to fix my 2008 Camry. Just tried it and it worked thank you very much.

I called my local dealership and they confirmed there is a known issue with the Camry sun visors so Toyota has enhanced the warranty, extending it 7 years for the sun visor and your VIN has to fall within a certain range.
Good luck!
hey, i appreciate the info on the repair, i was able to get it repaired and saved some money....thanks again
Yes, you have to take down those metal clips. They are the fasteners holding up the swing arm. When you install them back, push the seating in first, then the metal clips, finally the plastic insert to secure the metal clips. Hope this helps. Cheers!
Finally! They admit it. :( Good to hear. It's a win for our consumers.
@battursanchin: I am very pleased to hear that. The joy of DIY is way more than money can measure. Thanks for sharing your experience. Cheers!
Great music, for an irritating problem. Thank you.
😊
Good luck!
Hi,
Could you let me know how did you get the aluminum strip? I can't think of anything!
Awesome idea
I'll try myself,thanks.
@jafar115 Do you mean the black metal bracket on about 1:20? It's made of hard steel and not easy to build. I will recommend to find a replacement from a junk yard (used auto parts) near by.
I have a 2011, shouldn't be broke at all! I'll give it a try.
Peter, the aluminum strip you screwed in does that screw go in between the black steel part of the bracket?
Thanks.
Bing Go!
Did you drill through the internal metal hinge for more support.
WOOHOOO can I get a fixer to help me out. so glad I checked this out before forking out a small fortune
Hallelujah!
Thanks for the video, it is great, I drilled and used 4 zip ties. It works.
Thanks pal! It's a good news for consumers. The know it's a design/manufacturing flaw. They should issue recall and apologize to customers.
I'll try that on my '09 Sentra, thanks for the video!
Really? I think maybe many automakers share the same supply chain. :-( Thanks for your comments.
I will recommend to look for an old part from a junk yard (or used auto parts) near by. You should be able to install it like what I did. Good luck!
Peter, this just happened to me today. so frustrating! anyways where could i get the aluminum strip from and what exactly is it called? im a newbie when it comes this type of handwork....
Thanks for this -- worked like a charm!
Hooray! :)
Sounds great! Thanks for your comments. Cheers!
all for the wife, great job.
Hallelujah!
Shouldn't the wife have done the sewing?
