This is one of the most helpful videos I have ever come across. The amount of times I have come back to this because it is exactly what I need is astounding. Thank you so much!!!!
I was planning to make something annoying inside Zbrush and this made it so much easier. If I use this and then use Zbrush to add further detail I think my plan is achievable. Thank you for this amazing tutorial
go into the hierarchy and unparent it from the parent object. if you try deleting the plane when its the parent, the child objects attached will be deleted.
Unparent the image from the plane with shift + p, then use control + d on the image to duplicate it, delete all else that remains (including the original image). Worked for me on Maya 2020.
Hi Mike, I've followed the tutorial and it seems to work pretty great until i try to get rid of the plane behind the image i made a 3D version of. Is there something i am missing? I tried to separate the objects and even put them in different layers but maya won't let that logo detach from the plane. Thanks
This method is great for simple images but doesn't work well for complex and detailed pics. Is that a fair assumption? I was trying to use an image of a feather and it converted to very basic colors even though the feather was very detailed. If my assumption is incorrect, which I hope it is, is there a way to tell Maya to use more colors or whatever else is required? Thanks for your tutorials, I love them all!
when i convert the plane to texture to geometry, there was an error saying "you must specify an an input texture file" what should i do? im using the 2016 version
Great content. Thanks for sharing. There's another way (or many). I use the import method and Bevel tool. Playing around with the settings you'll get neat results. Greetings from North Mexico.
hi i have just got a 3d crystal engeaving machine and was wondering if you can con vert a photo to 3d it will be obj file to dfx or lss i think in maya
Thank you for posting! I'm having a pretty big problem though.... I make my flat surface and all, and I have it selected when I go to Texture to Geometry, and I select my file, a sword with a few repetitive curves in it. I have it saved as a 10 by 10 jpg white on black exported from illustrator. And when I apply the conversion, it does not post on my flat surface. Its initial view is only fully viewable from the front perspective, I try to do the hyper shade, and its working all screwy. Did you have any trouble shooting from this? Thank you!
I have a Q: i want to extrude a logo like this, and then add textures in substance painter, to then put this 3d textured model on a t-shirt or poster, how would I export an image of this model in a large enough resolution for a print? thanks Mike
The shape I want it black instead of everything else meaning I can't extrude it. Is there a way to change the black polys to white(and what are they called), or a way to invert the colours when using texture to geometry?
how do u make a plane as big as u want, because when I create a plane it appear a plane of 1x1, and I don't know how to create a plane with the dimensions I want thanks
A little late, but for those with the same question in the future: Under the Create Menu->Polygon Primitives->Check the "Interactive Creation" box at the bottom
What are the limitations on this and does this work in later maya versions? I want to make a simple logo for my instagram page. Would this work with letters?
i also have that problem, i cannot cut the faces away, because they are connected to the object, so when i try to cut them, that messes up the object's geometry
I figured it out and you select both of the object and the plane. Then combine them and then separate them and then delete the plane. It worked for me.
Thanks a lot for this simple and useful tutorial! Each time when I open a previously saved project with mesh created this way, the vertices and edges etc. are randomly recalculated. This absolutely ruins the geometry. Have You ever encountered this phenomenon? Do You know any way to prevent that?
im having the same problem! a way around it is to have your created mesh selected, delete it's history under edit>delete by type>history. to be extra save i also tried freezing the object before saving and closing the file. that helped with the geometry destruction. im still having other issues with texture to geometry, and your comment is already a year old, but maybe this helps you!
+ugo okeukwu Ugo, due to the number of questions I get every day that will be impossible, but you can ask questions via e-mail if you like mh-tutorials@hotmail.com
i don't know why, but when i try to rotate it it mushes and deforms, i noticed that the top part of it rotate but the bottom is stuck. it's like the base of is still sticking on the plane
Nvm, fixed it by using the method i learned from your export files video and it worked. all i had to do was delete history + freeze transformation + delete the plane shape in the outliner

I saw this years ago and suddenly today I needed it! :D
me to bro
That's what I needed. down to the point.
You are very welcome
sir i just tried to do the same with an outline of a velociraptor (only in B/W colors) it shows failed to convert texture
ok in my case it worked after i checked out "Fit to selection" option

you need to remove the material, and apply a new one

Helpful question just as this helpful tutorial and these helpful commentators. Thank you! :)
saved my bacon! LEGEND!
Amazing, thank you very much! That was precisely what I was looking for :)
Great
How do you separate the image from the plane?
It seems that everytime i put it on the plane my image distorts, I want the exact image outline on my plane...is that possible?
+Mike Hermes I did the same thing as you but when saved and came back another day it was glitched. Is deleting history a solution for that?
The same happened to me. Is there a solution for this?
Always fantastic Tuts!!! :)

I'm wondering if Png would be a better file format to use since png's allow transparency. Just curious.
thank youuu....I am trying now :) aaaand it worked :)

I use the Maya 2018 version, but the logo is not peeled off. How should I apply it in the hypershade section?

How to make custom shape and make them engraved on a cube or any shape ? Without boolean !
super inportant thing amd super usefull , thank you.
Thanks
mine keeps crashing when I hit the hypershade button after conversion?
How to make a complete 3D model out of it? Is there any possible way to do that?

Doesnt work for me When I convert it , It create empty plane or broken shape I dont understand :/

Invert the colors (Ctrl I in photoshop) before applying the image to the plane.
will this work with multicolored images as well or only 2-3 colors max?
It should

Ctrl+H Im sure just hides it. I highlighted the logo then export as Obj then re-Import and then delete the old logo that comes with the plane
is there a way to just delete the plane without having to go through that Exporting process?
