    Price Charting is great for games that trade VERY regularly... for games that trade VERY infrequently... its AWFUL.
    The other types of games that Price Charting fails are games with very expensive price swings due to variants or condition.
    I've seen MINTY of the MINTIEST copies inflate the value of a Complete in Box game...
    ...and I've seen the roughest of "not really complete" copies of the same game completely deflate the value of a game.
    A VERY rough copy of CIB Legend of Zelda with the "Oval Seal" a missing... or ripped map, crushed/water damaged box with missing tabs... might go for $75-100.
    A VERY clean copy of CIB Legend of Zelda, with the "Circle Seal", missing nothing... could go for $500-750.
    Sadly... Price Charting sees these two things as the same game with a wild swing in value.
    Now for a game like CIB Blaster Master... which isn't a particularly uncommon game... that probably sells 25-50 copies a week... is going to HAVE all those price swings, but you are going to find a very fair average ($45-55)... even though you will see swings as high as $125 and $25 which aren't really complete because they are missing a manual. You will see most copies in decent condition hovering around that $50.
    I see Price Charting as a "Guide"... but an honest seller and honest buyer will simply boot up eBay and look at what the story that the last 3 months tells and be able to see a compromise.
    Lately I've been happy to piece together CIB games... but I will always start with the box... if I can get the box... Its likely I'll find the manual at some point and the cart is always available.
    Boxes are always going to be the hardest thing to get, and while you are hunting down the rest... it looks mighty complete on the shelf!!

    • @xenos_n.
      @xenos_n. 2 года назад

      None of us can believe all the old games we sold back in the day. Those NES games were ridiculously cheap and in low demand back when they were like two generations old. Not many people realized how nostalgic they would be for them later and how valuable they'd be, we all just wanted extra money to help buy what was new. I still regret selling my SNES.

    • @101Volts
      @101Volts 2 года назад +1

      @@xenos_n. That was *so true* back from about 2003 - 2006. I collected then in its ultimate heyday for cheapness, and let's just say, if I hadn't sold it in 2010 - 2013, I'd probably have about $10,000 or more worth of stuff. All only out of collecting from yard sales, flea markets, Goodwill, and even eBay (though that was rare for me.) I had something like 750 games, not counting duplicates. I also got a Sega 32x new from eBay, because that felt like an OK thing to do, to open a new 32x back in 2003.
      How good were finds? Uh, let's just start off saying I got lucky, but it was more than that; retro gaming was *not* a very viable source of income back then, games were cheap and plentiful if you had a mind for it. "No one" was nostalgic for any of it yet, they were all too busy either getting through college, starting their adult life, or paying attention to whatever was new back then, or a mix of all the three.
      One of my best finds was in 2004. I literally bought 68 _individual_ NES games + 3 SNES games for $18 (roughly) from Goodwill in 2004. *Good* titles, like Power Blade 2 and Megaman 2, 3, and 4. Lolo 1, 2, and 3. Mario 2 and 3. Uninvited. Maniac Mansion. Maybe also Shadowgate, but I'm sure Deja Vu was in there. I know I also had a copy of Chip & Dale Rescue Rangers 2, but I don't remember for sure if I got it from that lot (though it seems likely.) The truth is, I was right there when the employees were taking the NES collection out from the back of the store, it had just been donated recently and everything was priced at 49 cents, minus the discount that I also got which brought games down to about 35 cents each. And all that for me, I was a kid just a week shy of his 13th birthday, and I barely had any money to spend (and it was really all Dad's money,) yet there I was.
      Another time (2005 / 2006,) I bought a Virtual Boy from a yard sale (minus the visor) for $5, plus a copy of "Red Alarm." I then later bought _another_ Virtual Boy missing the stand for $3 from the same Goodwill I mentioned above, but this other Virtual Boy had soda spilled on the controller, so the buttons were stiff. Easily cleaned, though.
      I got many 2003 - 2007 store displays for free from EBGames in a mall, since they would have just thrown them away after walking a distance (the store didn't have a back door) and I was on good terms with the employees thanks to Dad taking a big interest in my hobby. (I was only 12 when I started, I'm 30 now.)
      One of my rarest items was probably a NEW copy of Tank Brigade on Atari 2600, which was so rare that (at the time) not even Atari Age had a picture of the box art. And here, I bought a copy for $2 at the same Goodwill I mentioned earlier. They had 5 new Atari 2600 games, and 3 of them (that I don't remember the titles of) were $5 each, Night Driver (which I also got) was $3, and Tank Brigade was $2 since it didn't have shrink wrap.
      Oh, and if you're doubting my story, I also have been within 4 feet of a lightning bolt that went through my parents' living room and through the front window... But I'm saying that to see if you believe me or not. Everything I tell you here, however, _is_ true. It's just, do you believe me when I state how much the retro gaming market has changed?
      Not as though my story includes eBay for most of it, because it doesn't. But I _did_ buy from eBay, though it was rare, and it was typically for buying stuff I couldn't find locally, like when I got a Virtual Boy + 3 games + the visor and stand and controller + the AC adapter for $63 shipped. That was a bit of a deal, but not by much for 2005 standards.
      I did, however, get a ROB on eBay with all the Gyromite accessories for about $17 shipped in 2005. How? It ended at a _really_ bad time for the seller, I think Labor Day 2005. I won the auction for about $7.72, and shipping was about $10. I am, however, probably the only one who paid such a ridiculously low amount for a ROB that year; they were already known to be rare and valuable.

    Now I am retired and could never afford such frivolous spending, but I have no regrets. My still very incomplete DataBioTics collection is a prized possession.
    Passion spending is is hardly passion if it doesn't hurt a bit. I bet the majority of your viewers "get it" John. I've thought about this a lot. Video game collecting didn't really become a mainstream hobby until a decade or so ago. It was a very niche thing with people buying games and trading them in for newer games or money. Now you've got thousands of youtubers, collectors and game store owners showing off their collections and creating a market. And much like other things, covid probably drove up prices too. The rarity of games themselves too are also something to consider. There is no game junkyard like with cars and games can become damaged over time even in decent storage conditions. I will say the sealed Mario games that "sold" for a million is probably BS, but it's not strange for classic game prices to rise when there is demand.

    5:32 - What's your opinion on transplanting original labels to other cartridges? Is that considered "restoration" or "forgery?" Either the game label or back label. For example, suppose your Flintstones cart was physically broken, but the label was pristine. Then you had a second copy with a pristine cartridge, but completely destroyed label. Is it considered kosher to move the good label to the good cartridge to create a good copy?

    I'm glad there was something interesting in that box and you aren't one of those Collectables Traders who has been trying to claim like, an unboxed copy of Mario 2 is worth $300

    Nice! I'd still take the $350 lot over Flintstones though. Lots of classics in there.

    Those games, to me, are more invaluable than 1700 dollars. Money goes quick. Those games last a lifetime. Ahh.. the price of nostalgia lol

    $1700 you paid way too much. I'd say $500 would be a more fair overpriced pay. The $350 box seems a lot more fair, due to DW4 with a manual!

    I wonder if the copy of 10-Yard Fight that John got had the little clips on top or if it was a 5-screw copy without the clips

      @@JohnRiggs aw I actually think the clips look cool so I actually like the ones with the clips better. In fact some of my 5- screw games I took to my used video game store for $5 per game I had them switch my 5-screw games without the clips to copies with the clips and I know there were some games that only came in 5-screw but for all the games that I could I switched them for copies with the clips I still have some 5-screw games that do have 3-screw equivalents I just didn’t change them yet
