The only justification I can think of doing the HIAC first was to ensure it got its full time allocation. Otherwise it was a very odd decision and unfair on those following up.
I think they didn't want the crowd to have no energy for the tag match. In saying that, I still think the HIAC shouls have been last.
But it's not the case AT ALL because they have no time limits for their PLE it's not on PPV they don't buy hours, they can do whatever they want. Plus there was only 5 matchs in 3 hours and 3O minutes so there was A LOT of downtime that they could cut off to give more time to a match
I actually like that super important matches seem to be opening shows recently. Feels good!
The announcement of the champion championship got an audible "For fuck's sake" out of me though. Stupid idea for so many reasons.

I seriously don’t get why Solo receives so much hate, not in the arena I understand that he gets excellent heat but on Twitter they act as if he’s the worst wrestler ever. The guy is more than fine as a wrestler and every time he’s in a big match like this he holds his own and doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb. Respect to him and also Drew vs Punk is the best opener I’ve ever seen, MOTY for me!

Zayn beats Gunther on Raw, maybe through inteference from Goldberg.
This sets up Gunther vs. Goldberg for Crown Jewel, which is most probably what the Saudi Government wants. Especially since they have a massive hard on for Goldberg.
Sami Zayn (WHC) vs Cody Rhodes for the New Big Useless Belt. The Saudi crowd will rally behind Sami Zayn due to his Arabic heritage.
This allows for the Gunther vs Cody dream match happen some other time with better build-up and neither champion has to compromise their dominance.
Fully agree. Plus the KO turn means he can get involved in the Cody/Sami main event. I think they need to keep Gunther/Cody away from one another right now and I think another Raw title change might be part of building this show up as must-watch ahead of the Netflix debut

I really don't think when most people say some matches were mid they mean they were bad. I think they mean they were entertaining (obviously cuz they watched them) and well wrestled, but didn't hit that hype level in the way you'd hope in your idealistic mind. Like we all want each match to be a 15/10 banger, and we kinda imagine that it will before it's even happened, so we start wish casting about how it could have been better after we see it and it doesn't meet our lofty expectations.
I'm one of those people that walked away feeling meh about the middle of this card. But I can also objectively say this was a good PPV, based on the matches had and the stories told and what was set up. Could it have been better? Sure. But perfect doesn't need to be the enemy of good.
@@evanwestendorf9667 very mature! I thought it was an excellent show. I even found myself watching the women’s matches which I normally don’t enjoy. I loved Dominik leaning into the Latino Heat gimmick, I thought every match was very good.
The returns were fantastic and timely. Jacob Fatu was match stealing with his work. The show opening cage match was the best match of Drew’s career.
I genuinely could watch that PPV again.
@@Nola_Dani i thought they could have used Jacob better in that match TBH. His whole thing is that he's huge and can do power moves, but is also agile and really good at a variety of stuff, and then they had him mostly just headbutting people w Solo for a big majority of the match. He no sold some stuff, but they didn't really give him a lengthy section where he beat the ever loving shit out of Cody and Roman, which I think they should have done to make him feel like a next big star instead of just the baddest dude in a stable of guys you know are supposed to lose to the bigger stars. Just my two cents.

Simon I feel like you're just tending to some mark's feelings, Punk vs Drew HIAC match was an all time classic regardless of where it was on the card, and the main event delivered like a main event. The entrances, in-ring storytelling, Jimmy's return, Roman doing his actual first babyface move with helping Cody post match, Roman giving the title to Cody and being caught redhanded by the Rock... That was a perfect ending bro, It's not wrestlemania, Punk and Drew won't be mad not closing. They know they can steal the show regardless. And it all worked for the best.

I think the Rock being in the final segment was perfect! The HIAC match gave a happy and good ending to a feud while the Rocks appearance gave a great “what the hell is next?” feel.
Undertaker and Shawn set the standard for hell in a cell. One of the best matches out there.
HIAC was like a hardcore match in a Cell, which it should be. Best part of the PPV no doubt. The rest was just okay outside of the finale and Rock return.
It was a good PPV from a storyline standpoint, and setting up for the next PPVs got me excited for what's to come, but the middle of the card just didn't hit the way the start and finish did.
I’ve never understood them announcing the Saudi shows on live tv, the crowd reactions are always booing or just flat nothing at all. It comes off awful on television. Like Americans are gonna cheer that your going to Saudi? 😂 get real. That whole segment before Goldberg got involved was just not great.
To be fair it didn't come off like Triple H's idea. Something seemed off, mostly a lack of excitement from H. Lastly, they are a global company so they do have to entertain more fans than just us Americans. Money talks to everyone for everything.

I get introducing the new title and all that for this specific instance, but anytime they’ve ever said to the live crowd on tv, they all boo. I’d prob just do a video package next time, so you can pivot into something else easier.

I personally don't think that the negative crowd reaction is because it's held in a foreign country. It's just that over the years, WWE has consistently proved that Crown Jewel is by far the most useless PLE on the calendar. No authenticity, just gimmick after gimmick to give the Saudi Investors their 50 million dollars worth.

I like the spectacle of having the champion vs champion match be for both of the titles but I feel like they back themselves into a corner whenever they do that because then they only have 1 champion and will inevitably create a new belt for a second world champion which has happened after every single title unification in the last decade
Its really weird to set up a championship for Crown Jewel. Doesnt it kinda devalue the event in aome weird way? Like, instead of it feeling like all the wrestlers making it onto the card is an endorsement that theyre a big enough deal to satisfy the Saudis, now theyve introduced some sort of pinnacle match that takes precident over everything else at that show. We dont have a Mania champ, or a SummerSlam champ, why a Crown Jewel champ? It makes it less about the event as a whole being a big deal, and more about the big blow up match at the end. I dont hate the decision, but its gonna depend how the event around that match is booked. I would prefer the whole event be special, and not everything feel like preamble to some massive champ v champ match.

My biggest issue with the Raquel botch is shes not over. If they executed it better she could have gotten a ton of heat and looked more credible vs Rhea. I think they need to execute on something that shows her viciousness as a heel

The hell in the Cell shows how much trust wrestlers have in each other to keep each as safe as possible and also it was so uncomfortable but yet so good at the same time
Also, my highlight of the night was seeing Jimmy back and the embrace between him and Roman ,my week has been made🩵🩵
The only time I was not invested in the show was the whole crown jewel thing and the whole Gunther-Goldberg thing cause I genuinely thought it was a title for the women 😂😂😂 but overall fantastic show

Drew and Punk opening had an insanely fresh crowd that were wired up. If we are talking long term no one will ever talk about where the match was on a card, just the nearly year of build-up and a stellar pay off. This will go down in history as a stellar story and finish, it not being a main event really doesn't matter.

Punk and Drew should have been the last match and the last thing on the show! No question.
Two issues with that. First off if you are gonna have the Rock he will have to be last. If not then there has to be discussion throughout it about him being there. That takes away from everything else. Secondly if the cage is last then you don't really get to see the aftermath of it. You won't see Punk sitting there with oxygen. You won't see how tortured Drew looks. Those little things get lost if that match is the last one.

The hell in a cell match was exactly how hell in a cell should be
Amongst my sample size, Punk vs Drew was match of the night, and second was Poatan.
Opening with the tag match and then slowly building the Owens official heel turn for after the show would’ve been better. Get the crowd super into the show as soon as the rock shows up and give the guys their flowers that have been in the best feud of the year. Gotta reward keeping a storyline relevant for 10+ months
Was this the greatest event of the year? No.
Did I have a good time watching it? Yes! Sure, most of the matches had awkward moments (except for HIAC), but they also all had parts I really enjoyed. (Dom falling from the cage, Nia falling onto the ref, those near falls between Damian and Finn, etc.)
I personally thought it was a good show, but the decision to put Punk and Drew on first really hurt the matches afterwards. After the spectacle, they all felt a bit flat and dull, and that's quite unfair because ina any other context, they'd been good (not brilliant, but perfectly decent) matches. Entertaining and everything. But with Hell in a Cell first, it made them feel a bit slow and not as spectacular as they could have been.
Anyway, what I learned is that WWE have watched your "last minute rumors" vid and decided to mess with your scale, because you said "pretty much everthing happens which isn't going to happen" and WWE went "actually, yes it will" :D
Simon you are such a beacon of joy. Thank you. SO MANY PEOPLE online are totally ignoring the rest of the Liv/Rhea match (which I thought was pretty good) because of the awkward finish. It was a good match with a screwed up finish. Mistakes happen, and I agree with your pov of “who cares? We still understand the story. Let’s move on.”

Personally, I think K.O. needs to go full Deadpool. He already breaks the 4th wall, already acknowledges inside baseball, (saying a wrestler name and they show up, the pie face, etc). I think if they lean into 100% it'd be great. Owens can still be funny as a heel but it'd still work even as a face. Him and zayn both, need to be allowed to be funny. Face or heel. I dont mind either way. Though Sammy could benefit from being funny as a face. He only gets to be funny when he's a bad guy...

I believe the reasoning behind having a killer match open these shows is due to the move from PPV. Now, advertisers have probably shown they'll pay more for spots in the 2nd half of shows. So to change that, they'll need to set the standard for the shows starting strong to increase viewers for the start of shows.
Would a ladder, eliminatiom chamber or gauntlet match with all the champions been a better idea maybe??
Like limit it to 6 people for each side, e.g. Cody, Gunther, LA Kinght, Jey, and one from each tag team, and then Nia, Liv, Bianca, Jade, Tiffany (since women's mid card titles aren't official yet) and a "mystery 6th woman" (Roxanne Perez). Idk it might gut the rest of the card but to me that has more novelty than Champion vs Champion, it would feel valuable if all divisions were after it and regardless would probably be a banger match abd build considering the names.
Honestly, who knew that CM Punk's Rumble injury would be one of the best things tk ever happen to him, Drew and WWE as a whole?! They ran with the ball and they built something special. Both men should be super proud of their work.

I loved it. All of it. While ppl complained about that because the first match was so bloody, I think that what should be commended is the guys and girls and going out and not resting on their laurels, they worked their assess off.
Hell in the Cell being the first match was good for me as the event was late at night so i was wide awake for it lol
The opening Drew and Punk match reminded me of Becky and Trish last year with the cage. They beat the absolute shit out of each other in that match, and it was wild. I don't think they had any blood, but when that match was over you knew they put on a good show and were tired as hell. This had the same feeling of just wanting to hurt your opponent. Last night's match was definitely a little crazy.
I knew the HITC match with punk and drew should of gone on last when my eleven year old left the living room and i said where you going he said I just wanted to see the hell in the cell .....😮😅
Gunther telling Goldberg come I got two minutes for you completely destroyed him to the point that he nearly broke Goldberg.
Simon you forgot Edge vs The Undertaker at Summerslam 2008. That was a great Hell in a cell match.
Crown Jewel is definitely a "wait and see" thing for me. I like the idea minus the shaky geopolitical implications. The belt would ideally make the show worth watching every year, and like an actual Royal Rumble might incentivize wrestlers to wanna be a part of it. I don't think HHH is dumb enough to not build this up in 4 weeks. We're all begging Tiff to cash in... what if she cashes in on Liv and faces Jax there? Who's to say Sami can't beat Gunther and face Cody, especially with the developments going on at SD? You think KO wouldn't want his friend to beat Cody, turn to the dark side and take that sweet Saudi oil money? How does the Bloodline come into play? After such an eventful Bad Blood, I'm not sleeping on Crown Jewel.
I’m probably wrong and crazy but during the Goldberg and Gunther interaction it was literally right after the crown jewel announcement, with the champion vs champion match. I’m also with Simon I rather see Goldberg vs Gunther than Cody, I had the idea with Sami beating Gunther on Raw so, it would be Cody vs Sami which idk why I want to see that more than Gunther and that also leaves Gunther open for Goldberg in Saudi and I also know Saudi loves their legends.
I want Liv to hold the title until Wrestlemania , she's the best woman in WWE right now, save maybe Chelsea Green.... Liv definitely surpassed Rhea during Rhea's absence and Rhea's return has felt lackluster, I liked her better as an over heel rather than this babyface turn.. it's a subtle change, but it's noticeable and Liv has been absolutely turning everything she touches into gold.. Liv is probably the best "actress" in WWE right now, the way she can manipulate emotions from crowds and tell a story
Overall the show was pretty good. Punk and Drew had the match of the night if not a match-of-the-year contender. I still say this should have main evented. The end of Drew and Punk War delivered, this was an all-time great HiaC match. This made the stipulation feel special again. They made excellent use of blood, both men went all out and left it all in the ring. Even in defeat, both men look like stars. The chain around the knee was a great finish, also loved how Drew was using the table leg. Now we just see where Drew goes from this. Punk is most likely going against Gunther.
Bayley and Nia were okay but it was going to be hard to follow Punk/Drew. Nia in all red made her look like the Kool-Aid Man. The match had some sloppy spots but it really came down to the storytelling of the Nia/TIFFY Time feud. As we continued to tease the Cash In.
Priest and Balor were fine, I would have loved to have seen Finn win, but it was still good.
I like the idea of Champion vs Champion at Crown Jewel, but this new belt is a giant eye-sore. I'd rather they had announced something like the Women's Mid-Card titles. Gunther talking crap to Goldberg was the bigger highlight of this.
Liv and Rhea went about how I expected. Dom was great in the shark cage, but I do admit the ending fell flat. Rhea's own hubris cost her, and she wanted to beat up Dom Pinata instead of winning the match. I predicted Raquel's return and I'm happy to see it, but something went wrong with that ending.
The "Main Event" was okay. There was some good storytelling and they continued to make Jacob Fatu look like a star. Cody needs a better finisher. I still feel both Drew and Punk should have Main Evented and the Bloodline needed to win. Even with the Rock's reveal, I think people wanted more. Both Jimmy's return and the Rock got the biggest pops of the match. They also showed Jey at the very end with Roman and Jimmy, but they cut the camera quickly. We also learned after the show KO has attacked Cody in the parking lot so we have that as well.
does anyone else miss when every ppv/ple had a cool over the top themed stage set? like it doesn't even have to be over the top i just wish they would be at least unique.

Wwe has been killing it lately, and a good champion vs champion match are usually super exciting! But Nia vs liv and Gunther v Cody with neither in the line…doesn’t really do it for me. Because immediately after both shows will go back to status quo like nothing even happened.
The cage match should have been at the end. It was superior in every way. Such a shame. The rest of the PPV felt meh as it went on. Always save the best to last.

That doesn't make sense to me and I'm sure someone will reply stating a different angle which might make sense but I would just prefer The Rock to be his own separate entity... I wouldn't mind turning crown jewel into the old survivor series where you get champion vs champion on both brands, but only the 2 top champions and they get a stupid belt? I don't like that.
I think with Gunther and Goldberg they might go the no way out 2004 route Brock and Eddie remember Brock taunted Goldberg beforehand then Bill came in during the match this time with Sami benefitting by winning the world title that gives a out for Gunther
I liked the Hell in a Cell match but I do have to think the same people praising the match would be the same people that would say if it had of happend on AEW that the match went to far, going into the edge of the stairs is a risk it didn't need so on and so forth.

I’d argue it’s different because things like a cinder block and a syringe don’t really fit the arena of a wrestling match. It’s not the brutality, more the fact what they do to get to that brutality doesn’t fit.
It takes you out of the situation, whereas the steps, a table, chairs and a tool box with wrenches makes more sense for what would be around a cage match.
But that’s just me.

I've gotta disagree with Simon, Taker Mankind is the best ever hell in a cell. Yes it's a spectacle rather than a match but that's what hell in a cell is a spectacle. I don't remember much of the Taker Shawn cell match aside from Kane which was cool but it meant the win for Shawn was completely overshadowed not that that bothered me coz although I recognized his talent when he was in the rockers I've never liked Shawn. Turned out I was a good judge of character.

I think crown Jewel should before summer slam… Because around this time u are setting up road to wrestlmania storylines… I just feel every Crown Jewel we have to pivot because Saudia wants their type of matches which as we see most time doesn’t really go with the flow of the storylines already being told… the champions who lose.. will that effect their wrestlmania story line.. I just think Crown Jewel could be a PLE before summer slam…

When I saw that belt sitting in the ring I thought Hunter was gonna announce a women's mid card title which has been sorely lacking so I was hugely disappointed to hear about this Saudi title nonsense and then the reveal of the actual belt was even worse. It's one of the worst looking belts ever.
