The chips inside most current Switch cartridges only take up about half the space inside the plastic, so it likely wouldn't matter if the Switch successor carts are the same size or slightly different, similar to the 3DS carts
This is unlikely to be a problem, Sd express chips running on a version of NVME or PCIE protocols (and hugely rumored to be provided by Samsung for the Switch 2) will be available in micro-sd formats, physical size is expected to remain the same. Moreover, not having switch 1 compatible slots would go against "having a smooth transition". I can't see a scenario where you can have a "smooth transition" leaving out half the software produced the prior generation.
This is what I am worried about, the physical copy might not be possible to the successor but this could remedy if they would create an adapter so that the physical copies can be enjoyed on the successor as well.
Let us know down below with what you think about this news on backwards compatibility...are you a digital gamer or still hanging onto your physical media?
I have digital, and phyiscal media games. They should give you a digital version of the games you got like how you got ps4 disc into the ps5. You get upgrade for free, or you pay $10.00.

That would make a lot of sense but hopefully they take this into consideration if they do leave physical switch cartridges behind
