  • This is the typical day in the life of a cyber security specialist working in a government SOC.
    While this video is now a few years old, honestly, not much has changed as far as a typical day in a SOC goes. Full Disclosure: I had approval to post this video before putting it up.

      hey guys I know cyber-security is more of a male dominated career but I'm having some issues. I have an associates degree in cyber-security and comptia security+ certified ... but I applied to over 200 jobs and they all keep telling me I need 2 years experience.
      I have personal experience but they don't care about this .. they want to see if I have been working with a cybersecurity company or companies for 2 or more years. That's what they consider experience.
      So like plumbers and electricians who enter apprenticeship programs and get experience while working with a company... are there such apprenticeships in cyber-security. Not bootcamps but apprenticeship programs ... and if not then how I'm I suppose to get a job within any cybersecurity company then??

    It's interesting how different soc's can be so vastly different. From formal attire to casual, from a 9 am start to a 7am start, an 8 hour workday or a 10 hour shift (day afternoon night). Tools available is a whole other conversation, and of course the clearance for access and access methods, retina scanners, proxy cards, physical security check ins. Not to mention the model of the soc and what each level of analyst does. In one soc an L1 may encompass part of the L2 and threat intelligence roles and responsibilities where another soc might be a lot more separated. Ahhh, the day in the life indeed.... I also have kids and wake up at 5:30am lol

    I’m still at the beginning of the video so I don’t know if you addressed this yet, but why do you wake up at 6:30am if you don’t leave out the house until 8:30am?
    Why not wake up around 7:45am?

    • @levibeam100
      @levibeam100 3 года назад

      Some people are just morning people. I for one enjoy getting up pretty early before doing anything and here’s the reason. Say I have to leave the house at 8:30, like in that example. If I get up 2 hours before work, I can start the day how I want too. I can relax while drinking a cup of coffee/hot chocolate. I can meditate, read, check my phone, stretch, shower, brush teeth/other hygiene things and I can do it without rushing. Yeah, I’m a guy and if I woke up at 7:45 I could easily be out the door by 8:30. But it’s just nice not rushing and not having to wake up and immediately getting ready for work. With a schedule like that, it’s very lenient. And you know sometimes I do sleep until 7 or 7:30, but waking up early is just my natural stat. And while my schedule is different than leave house at 8:30, you get the idea.
      It’s just nice getting up and not having to rush to get ready for work. I can do some things that I *want* to do, before I do things that I *have* have to do. With that being said, I totally understand the average person is not a morning person. And I’m not saying what I do, or waking up at 7:45 is wrong. Just kinda my thought process behind things.

    So I’m trying to decide my career for when I go to university, right now I’m in community college and i have been wondering if it’s very hard to get into this field. And if you could give me some tips about this field.
    Ps. I’m horrible in math, and that’s my MAIN concern.

    • @MayBird97
      @MayBird97 4 года назад +7

      I do Software Assurance and have a Security+ certification. The only math I really need to know (so far, I just started 6 months ago) is understanding cryptographic functions and being able to understand business threats such as Single Loss Expectancy (SLE: how much we'll lose if one laptop is stolen), Annual Loss Expectancy (SLE x the average number of laptops we lose per year).
      Biggest tips:
      + Look into CompTIA Network+ and Security+ certifications. Buy the books and study this in your free time. I wouldn't worry about paying to take the exams since most employers will pay for them or reimburse you if it's a required certification for your position.
      + Make connections. Go to job fairs, introduce yourself to potential employers, make a LinkedIn, follow the companies on social media. In the end, my experience getting a job turned into "Hey, this is my friend Andrea! I remember you were looking to hire for blah blah blah position and she's graduating in May!"
      + I was a Computer Science major in college and took courses like Computer Security, Network Security, and Digital Forensics which definitely helped me knowledge wise. I also really enjoyed the topics so that made learning them a little easier. I didn't grasp networking well the first time I saw it, but when I saw it a second time while studying for my Security+, it all starting clicking together.
      My story of how I got my first full time job 6 months ago:
      I initially thought it would be really hard to get a job in this field (I graduated with a 2.9 GPA), but I became friends with the Systems Administrator for our computer science department and he hired me as one of his student assistants. From there, it really turned into a game of connections. He introduced me to his friend who was hiring graduates for their company. I was taken to multiple interviews through them and once someone offered me a position, I became a contractor for them.
      When I first met my boss, he wasn't interested in my GPA or anything. The first thing he asked about my resume was what belt I was in martial arts since I had listed it as one of my leadership positions. He asked me what kind of projects I've done and I listed my homework from college: I programmed a hotel booking system for this class, a medical program with a patient portal for this class. I did a forensic analysis on a flash drive that had criminal evidence and explained to him what was in my report. I created a network with virtual machines and practiced writing SNORT rules for intrusion detection. Then, he asked me if I god honest liked the idea of manually going through thousands of lines of code for 8 hours every day. I told him I might want to gouge my eyes out with spoons but I could probably handle it. We laughed and I was hired.

    Hey man, loving the videos. I am a data science student atm in the netherlands and I am thinking of pursuing a career into cybersecurity. I saw the video about you and expectations vs reality and it really struck me. I see in the video that you only work with windows at the end after saying that kali linux is your best friend. It seems like most of the work of a cybersecurity engineer is reading graphs and extracting information out of it. What kind of action do you then perform once you find out that there may be a problem. What kind of problem do you usually encounter ?

    • @dccybersec
      @dccybersec  4 года назад +1

      Hey mate, thanks for watching!
      Reading graphs/ analysing risks is usually the role of a SOC analyst, but depending on which job you are in is what your role entails. I use a mix of both windows and kali at work, but these days spend most of my time in windows writing reports based off the data my SOC team hand over to me. Those reports then go to a risk and compliance committee and actions are taken/ advised based on what the reports hold.
      I hope this helps to answer your questions :)

      While you do not need a degree to land a job in Cybersecurity, if you do not have prior experience it would help. I work as an Information Security Specialist for a Bank. I landed that job having only an Associates in Cybersecurity at the time. I did however have 3 years of general IT experience and at the time was enrolled in a BS/MS program. I do not hold any certifications. From what it looks like there’s a couple of general paths you can take. It’s all about marketability. The most crucial thing I’ve seen is that experience matters most and Degrees/Certifications are a bonus (where not required.) You need to be committed if you’re going for your degree, it can be very challenging. You can always get your toes wet by going for basic certifications like Security+ or CEH. Feel free to message me if you’d like some more insight.
