It's always very admirable to hear stories of parenting giving their best in providing for their children. In this case, a single father is trying to finance his son's education by selling his apartment. But is that the only way? What about refinancing?

As someone that "lived independently" for 3 years in uni overseas and now "stay with my old folks and don't do my own laundry" 🙈... yeah in hindsight it wasn't absolutely necessary. My dad wasn't exactly wealthy either, M40 by definition (not T20 but have high commitment and complain about being poor), till this day I'm not sure how did he manage to save up 500k (price to study in UK for 3 years about 8 years ago, so adjust that for inflation).
My dad was also told by friends and family that it isn't great ROI, and I suppose I wasn't fully matured enough back then to really know what I wanted in the long run, but he decided to just go ahead anyway, kinda like a gift. My uni days were incredibly stressful, much more than the job I have right now, the combination of having to cope with studies and not let my parents down. I suppose the experience was transformative to a certain extent, but I can't say that the same wouldn't have happened if I studied locally but sufficiently far away from home.
That being said, it was a gift that I will forever be grateful of. These days I just try my best to be a good son to them.

sell or refinance is both a stupid idea for education
plenty of opportunity in Malaysia without going abroad and still can be successful

Agree with you, as a public university graduate now working with most of the aboard graduates. I can't tell any clear difference between student studying aboard and studying local.
It will be a good experience to study aboard but, does it worth it? It really depends.

I study in Segi with partnership of UK uni, comfortably finish my degree here less than rm100k. No need to hassle about to spend such unnecessary money just for studies. Save up money for future uncertainties.

Might sound harsh, but i’ll say it.
It’s stupid to send your child overseas if you don’t have much money. Judging by the situation of this OP & market value of the appt, 350k is not enough to cover tuition fees & living expenses in Australia.
What if your child don’t pass? That money burn just like that.. I have a few friends that go overseas but come back within 2 years bcs cannot cope up with study or mental health.
A good local private uni is more than good enough, unless the education is cheaper overseas than locally like Medicine.

To send a child to Australia depends on which university and which state as the price will be different. For UniMel a year school is about aus$5k per subject for core and breath subject around aus$3k ++. Monthly expenses around aus$2.2k (rental $1k++). So aus$2k x 12 and aus$40k a year for the education. Just studies in Malaysia in private university as it is the same quality like Monash or Nottingham.

RM350K can study in Sunway and get Australia degree comfortably in Malaysia. Doubt AUD100K is enough for his son if do it in Australia.

Many overseas uni would just rip off your pockets. With bad inflation in Australia, better invest in private university located in Msia. If you want your kid to be more independent just put him/her in uni located far from home. My friend study in private uni in Malaysia and now working for overseas bank in overseas. A year pay enough to cover her whole 4 year study. Worth her investments.

Alot of my frens actually went overseas like UK and US. Tuition fee plus living expenses per yr is like rm200k ish. Now that they finished their degree n came back Malaysia to work, wonder when will they ever recoop the cost as alot of fresh grads salary are only about rm2.5k to 3k... But perhaps family rich la so dont really matter to them 😅 But i d much rather my dad give me the money n send me to local uni instead. Imagine fresh grad with a fully paid house n passive income per month, fuiyo!
